I have an OriNoco Gold card. I was getting a weak signal, but I was getting a signal. Problem is that I put on a 5 dbi external antennae and then went to check the signal strength using the program Wireless Config, and the signal was lost. After that, no signal at all. Uninstalled, reinstalled, and everything I thought about. No signal. The access point is a Netgear wireless router. Any suggestions? Blessings, Ed |

I am running OS 10.3.7 and i know the driver says it is for 10.2. Could that be a problem? Yeah the little thing that says "WirelessConfig" and shows a PC Card is at the bottom of system preferences. If you are asking when I click on Network if i see the new device the answer is no. I only see Internal Modem, and Built in Ethernet, no en1 or anything like that. Thanks in advance for the help. dan ==============Original message text=============== On Mon, 07 Feb 2005 12:00:21 pm GMT xyberpix wrote: If you go into Preferences-> Network, does the new device show up there? xyberpix On Sat, 5 Feb 2005 10:44:13 -0600, Daniel B. Hello, I downloaded the driver and began set up and all went fine until I got to the part where I was to click on the "Wireless Connection" tab under "Others" in System Preferences. When I did that, I was not able to type anything in any of the text boxes (the text was all grey) or to check off any of the "check boxes". Basically it opened up to the right window but it wouldnt allow me to type or check anything within the window. I dont know if it is because the computer isnt recognizing my card (Dell TrueMobile 1150) and picking up networks, but when i put it in it does show up on the menu bar next to the battery percentage meter. I tried rebooting several times with the card in and out to no avail. Any help? Thanks |

Just asking because I >don't have an external PCMCIA slot like powerbooks do. The apple airport card slot is not a PCMCIA card slot, though it looks like one. This in contrast with the slot in the Airport Base station, which was known to be canibalized for its internal PCMCIA card in the early days of wifi. The orinoco does have an antenna slot that you can open by prying off a tiny plug. If you want to use other than built-in airport cards (they are stil available in limited quantities here and there) your option is to use a USB device. They come in formfactor of a USB stick or a box with a USB extension cord. You probably want to go for a PRISM2 device. There is a hack describing the MA101 USB stick to be used as a wireless device on the wifi pages at www.binaervarianz.de at the Kismac pages. Ard |

Actually, from what I understand, the Airport card interface is a proprietary one that shares more characteristics with IDE than PCMCIA. -Ansley On Feb 4, 2005, at 3:49 AM, Jens Miltner wrote: > > Am 02.02.2005 um 01:08 schrieb Mark Ronaele Watkins: > >> Is the apple airport card a PCMCIA card? The Airport cards are shorter than your standard PCMCIA card, so you'll probably run into geometrical problems. Also, the card would need a connector for an external antenna (not sure whether the Orinoco card provides this). Apart from that, I believe the Airport card is in fact a PCMCIA card, but I'm also not sure whether the Airport slot is a standard PCMCIA slot... All in all, I doubt you'll be able to fit in an external card :( </jum> |

Greetings! My driver works just fine with an Orinoco Silver and a Pismo running Panther. However, after each reboot, I have to re-enter the hex key for the encryption. It seems as if the driver was "forgetting" this every time. Anyone seen this? Any solutions? Cheers, Frank |

Is the apple airport card a PCMCIA card? If so, couldn't an Orinoco Card be installed internally in my iBook? Just curious. Has anyone managed to get another wireless card inside of their iBook. Just asking because I don't have an external PCMCIA slot like powerbooks do. Thanks, Mark |

Hey All, Been trying to get this working, and I think that I'm 3/4 of the way there. The driver is installed, and the I get blinking lights on the Orinoco Gold card, but for some reason trying to get WEP working seems impossible. Can anyone please point me to some docs or anything that I may have missed, as the FAQ doesn't help, and looking through the various postings on here I can't find anything. It picks up the SSID of my network, but won't seem to allow me to ad my WEP key in hex, any ideas thoughs much appreciated. xyberpix |

The problem is not how you are installing the wirelessdriver. The WPC v.4 uses a different chip from the earlier versions, and it is not compatible with any Mac driver that I know of. At one point, LinkSys was willing to exchange v.4 cards for v.3 cards (which *are* compatible with both the open source driver and the ioxperts driver), but I don't know if they are still doing that. Possibly. I'd use the finder's command-f search function to find any=20 remaining bits of the other driver. Add search criteria like 'visible=20 or invisible' and 'contains the words "drivername" ' eg 'Ioxperts' as=20 the drivername if it was an ioxperts driver, to the fields defining=20 your search - these items I would then trash using something that=20 ignores permissions, like dropobliter, then reboot - this should=20 complete the uninstall (WARNING - be VERY careful you don't erase=20 essential files - stick to stuff that can definitely only be related to=20= the older driver). In /preferences (both user and system library based - and also whilst=20 on this point, don't forget there are /library/preferencepanes and =20 user/library/preferencepanes) there may be a com. =A3$%^&.plist =20 preferences file fro old drivers that can hold you up. Seem to remember that Kori Lessing mentioned something about fixing=20 permissions on the subject of these purposely created folders, though=20 you'd really have to search the archives of the forum to dig up his=20 email. Sorry. FYI - In general running /sbin/fsck -y (for 10.2.8 and upto) or=20 /sbin/fsck -f (if you are on a journaled system 10.3.x) then typing=20 reboot and hitting return after it shows 'disks ok' message (assuming=20 it has some tidying up to do) - (this is in 'single user' mode=20 .......maybe you ought to get some web-based good advice if this raw=20 UNIX single user mode is new to you !)......... and then running 'fix=20 permissions' from the app 'disk utility' (in your utilities folder) is=20= often considered by many a good way of ensuring that installs of any=20 software are landing on a fresh healthy system. Dear Robert I must stress that I am NO expert, but this bit - > /Users/robertcampbell/Desktop/Troubleshooting Info.command: > /usr/local/bin/WirelessConfig: No such file or directory > logout > [Process completed] suggests to me that the install hasn't been complete or that stuff hasn't gone where it should have - each time I have installed wireless driver (just did one yesterday after reinstalling 10.3) there often is a need to create a folder /library/preferencepanes for starters, so the relevant files have somewhere to to be installed (although it seems as if if you keep reinstalling eventually these folders get created ?) other tactics that have worked for me - install using main installer package, reboot, install again using separate installers (in the installers folder), reboot; checking to see if the en1 port has it's existence confirmed in the network prefs pane in sys utilities, selecting this, then rebooting (you get the idea - loads of mucking about backwards and forwards til it sticks !)) - I actually once got fed up as it seemed not to have taken and ran the uninstaller (with corresponding full confirmation in terminal that it had been uninstalled) and just as I was about to reboot got a dialogue box pop up that said "a new port en1 has been detected, do you want to configure his port ?" I clicked yes and had it fully working on the network within seconds - of course after restarting the port had gone dead as the uninstaller script had then finished properly trashing the relevent files (I think it renames a .kext file so that it can delete it on reboot whereas just renamed and moved by the uninstaller it was still working happily ! - just a theory .....) Another top tip - get rid of any other relevant wireless drivers you may have tried - I once got it up and running after dumping the ioxperts driver. I also remember an email from kori lessing sometime ago that had some of the info from the top paragraph expanded upon - with a copy of what the troubleshooting script should say when all the files are correctly installed. Any how as I say, I am not an expert and would really appreciate a more detailed and correct assessment of why it sometimes fails to install from one of the developers - I do system clean installs fairly regularly for various reasons and am frustrated myself by how hard it is to get it installed sometimes ! That said we'd all be up the creek without a paddle if these guys hadn't done the work already, so a big thanks for that ! Good Luck ! I am sorry, I should have given you what the computer is doing. The card is powered up, and the computer recognizes the card. But there is no signal coming in, and so I cannot configure the computer to en1 or en2. Blessings, Ed |

Hello, This is my first post here. I am quite frustrated with this wireless networking. I am hopeful that you will be able to help me out. At first, I thought the distance from my office to my point of access was too great. But I have had a tech come in with his Powerbook and with a wireless card, pick up a signal. So I know the problem is with my network. The Point of Access is a Netgear wireless router connected to a PC computer. I hear that it makes no difference. No WEP. So, here is the troubleshooting data. Please tell me what to do. ### wirelesscard info | | "VersionOneInfo" = ("Realtek","Rtl8139") ### network info lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 16384 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000 gif0: flags=8010<POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST> mtu 1280 stf0: flags=0<> mtu 1280 en0: flags=8822<BROADCAST,SMART,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 tunnel inet --> ether 00:03:93:7c:52:46 ppp0: flags=8051<UP,POINTOPOINT,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet 209.63.213.69 --> 209.63.213.10 netmask 0xffffff00 ### wd command line tool status /Users/robertcampbell/Desktop/Troubleshooting Info.command: /usr/local/bin/WirelessConfig: No such file or directory logout [Process completed] Blessings, Ed |

I have a PB Wallstreet 233MHz with upgraded RAM and HD. I am currently running on OS 10.2.8. I recently purchased a Proxim's Orinoco 802.11b Gold Client PC Card and downloaded and installed the driver from sourceforge.net but I am still not able to access my wireless network. This PC card was listed as one of the cards that has been successfully used as reported on the list at sourceforge.net. My access point is a D-Link 614+ and I do not have it set on encryption yet. Neither the power light nor the activity light are lit on the card after I plug it into pc card slot. I've tried restarting after installing the card and wireless driver. I've uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it again. I feel like i've tried everything listed on the web. Can someone please help me? Ho Young |

I apparently have a similar problem as many other folks. I have a tiG4 and orinoco gold card. Wireless driver files appear to be installed in the correct location [see below results with troubleshooting app.] Computer sees card in system profile and icon appears beside clock. BUT, can not set up network, no en1 choice and wireless config. Grayed out as well. Is this the chicken/egg thing? Can't get wireless connection without card working, but can't get card working without connection to router?!?!? How frustrating. I am going to have to return the card....? Thanks. Very odd and a bit disturbing... I am using the open source wireless driver on a PB Wallstreet G3/300. It works great and has for a long, long time. I recently reconfigured my house so that I am using an old slot loading imac (G3/400) with an internal airport card to reshare my wired network connection via Mac OSX 10.3.7. This also works great, and allows me to have a very compact and hidden server and base (crawl space under the 700sq/ft house). I am using 40bit WEP to secure my network. Everything basically works, but I have recently made an alarming discovery.... If I use the Wallstreet (10.2.8 ) to copy large files, the Base station imac crashes hard (no panic log). Obviously this isn't the way *nix is supposed to behave. I can do the same file copy from my TIbook G4/867 with a airport card and it doesn't cause the same crash. I am going to try turning WEP off , since I have a feeling it's related to that somehow? Any thoughts? Anybody see something similar? Seems to me this is an issue with OSX rather then the OSW driver, but the driver is triggering it. Marty |
