jan my heart goes out to you. but you canNOT get 128 bit WEP on a ORiNOCO Silver. none, 40 or forget it. i'm clueless about the Lucent WaveLAN Silver. i was fine setting up the original graphite airport (40 bit only) using a orinoco gold at 40 bit. for wep to work at all with 3rd party cards, see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108058 . what solved all my problems then was to use a 5 character password. try that. but since i replaced the graphite airport with the snow dual ethernet (128 bit), using my same card with a 13-character password, as per the above link, on os 10.3, doing the mumbo jumbo at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106424 and other apple pages, this card will not connect me. the signal strength shows fine, all the other users at this location are fine and dandy with their airport carded macs and my mandatory 13 character password. when i unencrypted the base station i can connect just fine, but this is not an option anymore, as for you also. i spent a lot of time with wirelessdriver faq, docs and news list, the apple site, very helpful by the way. http://www.apple.com/support/airport/ . ran outta time, now i'm hard wired (alas). i hope something here helps you. despite my new problem, i wanna thank Rob McKeever and the others for the development of wirelessdriver. Hello, Has anyone had any luck with 128 bit WEP on a Lucent WaveLAN Silver (or similar, eg ORiNOCO Silver) card under OS 10.2 yet? Things didn't seem too promising back around 2002-09-11 in the thread "Can't get WEP to work in b5". A couple of years ago using a WallStreet Powerbook G3 I was having no problems connecting to an unencrypted Graphite Airport network through that Lucent WaveLAN Silver card under OS 10.2.?, however when I tried turning WEP on I was unable to get things to work. So we left encryption off and I happily used WirelessDriver to connect to the network for a number of months (as a result I'm thoroughly grateful for the work that was put into WirelessDriver, thanks!). The WallStreet laptop was then retired for a while. However, recently I've started using it again for some testing. Unfortunately disabling encryption isn't really an option anymore, and using a pair of Airport Extremes connected via WDS, and OS 10.2.8 on the laptop, I'm having similar problems to what I did a couple of years ago and to what it appeared people were having in the aforementioned email. I can see a substantial amount of signal from the network. However, after entering the WEP hex key and hitting Apply Now, it continues to use a self assigned IP address (manually setting it up to something that should be on the network is of no help, it still can't talk to it). In previous posts some people mentioned the WirelessConfig pref pane reverting to Airport Password 40bit and no key when restarting their computer, I in fact get this behaviour when simply quitting and reopening System Preferences (despite the keychain having the correct key for the network). Any ideas or has anyone had any luck with a similar setup? Thanks, Jan Vaughan |

Marc, The same problem occurred for me. I've got an unbranded card that I use in an upgraded wallstreet powerbook under panther 10.3.6. At first, the card couldn't be recognized. Then I found a hint on the web suggesting that removing two files from the /System/Library folder as told in the first topic on the FAQ page http://wirelessdriver.sourceforge.net/faq.html. sudo rm -f /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache sudo rm -f /System/Library/Extensions.mkext It seems that after reboot, these two files are recreated. At least for me, this solution worked. Hope it helps. Marc, There are a couple with OSx commercial drivers available. They would=20= be a better deal if you can find one you like. The commercial drivers=20 have more options. I think Cisco is one. Marc, If the driver is installed correctly and you have rebooted, you will have a new preference icon under OTHER in System Preferences, that is labeled Wireless Config. If that is there, and opening it doesn't show your card, then the chip in the card is not one that is supported. I think the documentation has a list of supported chips. You can buy a 8011b card today for as little as $9 at Microcenter.com. Sorry if these seems like a silly question (how may posts start with this sentence)... But how do you get the mac to even notice the card is plugged in to the slot? I am using a TiBook G4 500mHz OSX 10.3.5 Wireless card is using an AMD chipset, but is unbranded. Cheers Marc |

Does anyone know if there are any Mac OS X drivers for the Belkin F5D6020 Version 3. It uses the Realtek RTL8180 Chipset. There are drivers available for Mac OS X and this chipset at Realtek's site, however, I believe they are incompatible with the Belkin card. I think the Realtek drivers don't recognize the card as using the Realtek chipset because of the Belkin firmware. Does anyone have any advice to offer? Thanks. |

Dear list! My Farallon Card doesn't work under OS X 10.2 Jaguar with the current driver 1.0.0b5 :( After driver installation and system restart I wouldn't get a new ethernet device (en1 or en2) when launching the network configuration. I attached the result of the troubleshooting-script. Is my card to old for your driver? This is the exact inscription on my card: Farallon - SkyLINE Wireless PC Card IEEE 802.11 Compliant DSSS at 2.4 GHz ISM band FCC Part 15 Class B MXF-WL201 ETS 300.328/300.826 Canada RSS-139 THX a lot for helping! Moi, I've just read that the D-Link DWL-650+ card is not supported. Can anyone confirm that or even contradict it ? It's just that my local dealer has a nice bundle with adsl modem, wlan station and that card, so it would be nice.... Thanks Torsten |

I am using the driver with my Proxim Skyline card on my PowerBook (Ti) running OS X 10.2.8. I was in a public park where lots of folks were connected wirelessly. My TiBook picked up a signal but it immediately opened the Verizon.com web page asking me if I wanted to sign in. Apparently there were a number of signals available there, but I couldn't find a way to choose. I found another Powerbook user who had an Airport card and he showed me an icon on the menu bar which allowed him to choose from the various signals. How do I get those choices with this driver??? TIA Carl |

Isn't wep just a protocol? Why would it NOT be supported? It is above 802.11.... I mean, it's a function of whatever software you are using to establish and drive your connection. All the Senao does (and i have this *great* long-range nic too) is push 802.11-whatever frames. regards, EL On Sep 27, 2004, at 5:45 AM, Jeroen Diederen wrote: > > Hi you all on this mailinglist, > > I just ordered a Senao/Engenius NL-2511 CD Plus EXT2 PCMCIA card to > have > a better card than my airport now. Does anyone know here in this mailing list, if WEP encryption is supported for trhe Senao/Engenius NL-2511 CD Plus EXT2 PCMCIA card? According to the hardware list on the website, it is not supported. Before buying this card I'd like to know if it works or not. |

I have been trying to use KISMAC as a stumbler because from what I understand it is the only stumbler that will work with a Lucent Hermes based PCMCIA card. Unfortunately it seems that it cannot connect to a network and look for networks at the same time... I previously had a 12" pbook with airport extreme and macstumbler/istumbler worked great for this feature... Now that I "upgraded" to a 15" Pbook that only offers poor recption on the airport bus, I wanted to use my pcmcia wireless card that gets TREMENDOUS reception. But I have no stumbler that can pick out networks and connect to them.. Does anyone know of a way to use Kismac or something in this manner? |

Ok this may not be appro? But I love kismac, and it's filtering ability, But I don't have or want to fork out $20.00 for I0xperts driver to run my Pcmcia wifi card. I am running a PB G4 800mhz with a senao 2511 cdexplus card. The problem I am having is that using the I0xperts driver or Sourceforge driver it keeps wanting to jump to another ssid other than the one I specify. Is there any kind of script, or terminal command line I can enter to block (filter) certain Bssids from even being considered? Basically the same thing Kismac does when running. Thanks for the help. TIA Daren I am running OSX 10.2.8 |

I'd say KisMac has certainly not ceased development and is certainly a modern software tool for scanning networks. The product was quite polished to say the least when Mick decided to have a rest. Still if there are questions regarding Kismac problems, Mick isn't reluctant to give his support if he can. Or so is my experience up until now. Kismac's Prism2 support is quite good as far as I know. Mick is doing other things along the same path, such as developing new drivers for newer cards. Or am I missing a whiff of sarcasm, not being native English? ard |

There were several > 200-300mw > PRISM based cards that provided excellent range. Right now, the high power PRISM cards are still the best deal for power (though this is not always a guarantee of long range, especially in indoor environments), and several of them are great for connecting external antennas to. These are the PRISM cards it's still possible to find on store shelves (such as the SMC 250mW card, which seems to be everywhere I look :-)). PRISM cards are still around, they've just become the exception rather than the rule, and the writing seems to be on the wall for the future. In the longer term, there are several good Broadcom-based cards (including Buffalo's, which uses the same antenna connector as the Orinoco cards, so you can re-use pigtails and antennas). The Apple Airport Extreme driver has some glitches when used with a Cardbus card, but it's mostly usable. Atheros cards have the reputation of having the best radios, but Mac support for them is pretty poor. OWC does have a driver, though it's quite minimal. IOXperts is working on support for a number of newer cards, but for the moment we're concentrating on fixing our support problems *before* rolling out new products. Just seemed like a good idea, given the bumpiness we experienced this summer. > And what are the preferred > modern software tools for scanning for networks, with KisMac also > having > ceased development. Hmm, last I knew, Michael was still working on it: he isssued 0.12a in June, and hasn't made any announcement that I've seen about stopping development; it's just been going slowly. iStumbler's also still around, and now does Bluetooth scanning as well as 802.11, which is kind of cool. It's not as featureful as kismac, but it's fine for doing general scanning and wardriving. iStumbler also has a plugin interface, so a plugin could be written to hook iStumbler up to non-Apple drivers...
