i am running os10.2 on my mac wallstreet powerbook with a sonnet g4 upgrade card and a gold orinoco pc card using the sourceforge wireless driver beta_5. everything was working fine for a while but lately, whenever i boot into 10.2 from 9.2.2, my computer joins my specific "closed" airport base station (graphite) network ok but self assigns a new ip address that won't let me connect to the internet. the self assigned ip address is 169.254.249.xxx. if i go to tcp/ip "manual" and type in a 10.0.1.x ip address and my airport base station router address it still doesn't work. if i reboot into 9 and reconfigure my airport base station network to "open" using the airport admin utility and then reboot into 10 the dhcp server assigns the correct ip address (10.0.1.x) and i can connect to the net. i tried reinstalling the sourceforge driver without luck. i don't understand os10 well enough to know where to make adjustments. i don't understand how i can be connected to my specific airport base station network with a strong signal and not get the proper ip address assigned. another symptom i noticed is that when the problem first showed up it started taking (and continues to take) much longer than usual for my startup sequence in os10 to get through the "waiting for network initialization" step. i don't recall having installed any new software or having made any other changes to my system just prior to the problem showing up. i have two other computers on my airport base station network, one running 9.2.2 and one 10.2 and they both work fine. jschwell |

I have a Microsoft MN-510 USB adapter which is based on the Prism 2.5 chipset. I was previously using this device on a Rev B iMac G3 with Panther and an older version of the driver. I got perfect wireless reception with this combination. This morning I downloaded the latest version of the driver and plugged the same MN-510 into my Mini. No luck. The preference pane is there but the MN-510 is not in the list of network devices in the Network preference pane. Is the Prism 2.5 chipset no longer supported by the driver? Any help is appreciated! Desperately need help or advice. My hardware: a Titanium Powerbook 500 Software: 10.3 (Panther) My home WiFi system runs off a 1st-Gen Apple Base Station - and works fine with both iBooks and iMacs equipped with airport cards. It is a non-encrypted non-password protected home network. So what's my problem? It has to do with my new WiFi Card - an Orinoco Silver "b" card Downloaded the latest WiFi sourceforge Installer for OS 10.2 (at least, the latest one on the website). Did the initial install fine...BUT - In my System Preferences, when I select Network - there is NO EN1 or EN2 Interface. The only interfaces listed are the default ones - Internet Connect, Ethernet, or iRDA. However, at the bottom of the entire ('Show All') System Preferences window, there is a new 'Preference Pane' (under the new Category 'Other') - which says "Wireless Config". Unfortunately, when I access it, everything in it is GREYED OUT So then I tried doing the following (described in the sourceforge FAQ) - opening the terminal App and typing in: sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext sudo rm -f /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache sudo rm -f /System/Library/Extensions.mkext I've done this a number of times and get different and varying error messages - things like "no such bundle file exists" - or "can't add kernel extension sudo". Then I ran the "Troubleshooting Info" command - it gave me the following -- Last login: Tue Aug 30 13:33:23 on ttyp1 /Volumes/WirelessDriver\ beta\ 5.1/Utilities/Troubleshooting\ Info.command; exit Welcome to Darwin! So.Everything is a BIG coincidence. My story begins when I upgraded to Tiger and my orinco card stopped =20 working. I slowly started to spare some money for classic airport =20 card which is expensive as hell here in cz ,about 170$ (US) Then googlin around for orinoco antena connector, I went to this page >> http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/WirelessDriver After reading it, I downloaded the http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/=20 WirelessCard.zip zipped sources which look to be CVS version of =20 wirelessdriver with this >> http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?=20 func=3Ddetail&aid=3D1195323&group_id=3D34453&atid=3D411314 patch for = tiger. The I wanted to install KisMac, because wirelessdriver has no =20 scanning, for me, hotspot guy, is useless. Installing KisMac with the =20= Orinoco unloading patch did the kext unusable, then I realized that =20 KisMac overwrited my Tiger version with the 3 years old patched =20 version :/ So again, I continued to spare money for airport card. Again one day I was googling for mac adress faking on Mac OS X (my =20 ISP allows only 1 MAC and the router crashed :/ ), It bring me up to =20 sourceforge, wireless driver section of patches....WOW...the most =20 simple think...downloaded the patch, read a man page for =20 patch...tryied patch -p1...damn :/, tried patch -p0, works fine, =20 recompiled the driver with no hassle. So I decided to post the =20 binary for easy installation. Then after more than 2 months, googling for some hack to get Visor =20 and Orinoco together, I ended guess where :)) On 2003 archive of wirelessdriver mailing list :)) So I went to 2005, =20= August and there is somebody who finaly want's my patch. Okay, I never did nothing more than downloading, patching with old =20 patches and clicking "Build" . Also the card stopped crashing the system when removed and inserted =20 again.Just reload the kernel extension So even my mum could do that. I am posting my first draft here in the forums for peer review before posting on the KisMac wiki. I am crossposting with two groups for the SourceForge driver as well. If you have anything to add or correct, please let me know. Text inside of brackets [] is not really part of the Guide, but a solicitation for more information. Introduction: A high output, high senstitivity 802.11b card with external antenna jacks is an excellent choice for scanning for networks with tools such as KisMac as well as connecting to networks. There are several such cards using versions of the PRISM chip set. This guide summarizes the installation procedures and functionality that you are likely to achieve with various versions of OS X. I prefer the PRISM 2 chipset over the newer PRISM GT chipset for 802.11g cards, because there are no high output high senstivity PRISM GT 802.11g cards with a external antenna connector that I could find. [If you are aware of such a PRISM GT card, please let me know.] Note: I did not test WEP because support varies within PRISM cards. You may be limited to connecting to open networks. These procedures were tested on an open network. I hope to see further development/debugging of the SourceForge Wireless Driver to fix the flakiness, and make WEP and Mac address configuration work more consistently. Jaguar (10.2.8) Functionality achieved: You should find that you are able to connect to networks with your card, scan with Kismac, and change Mac Addresses with WirelessMac. Be sure to reboot after you scan before connecting to a network because Kismac is flakey about unloading the driver. Also I would recommend a reboot after changing the Mac address before connecting to a network with a custom Mac address and maybe another reboot after configuring the Network control panel to use what the operating system perceives as a "new" adapter. 1) Install version 1.0.0 b5 of the SourceForge Wireless Driver according to the instructions. 2) Insert your wireless card and determine the IOName of your card using the command /usr/sbin/ioreg -l | grep pccard 3) In the terminal issue the su command to become the root user and then cd into /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext/Contents. 4) Edit the info.plist file (with pico) and look for the following section. <key>everything else</key> <dict> <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>org.noncontiguous.WirelessDriver</string> <key>IOClass</key> <string>org_noncontiguous_WirelessDriver</string> <key>IONameMatch</key> <array> <string>pccard156,2</string> <string>pccard1eb,807</string> <string>pccard274,1613</string> <string>pccard274,1612</string> <string>pccard138,2</string> If your card is not already present, follow the pattern to add it at the bottom of the list. 5) Save the file and SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER FOR A COLD BOOT. You can leave the card inserted through the remainder of these steps. (The Wireless driver is a little flakey and may not recognize the card right away, even with a warm boot, so a cold boot should get it working with your card.) 6) Restart your computer, and verify the card is recognized by issuing the following command in Terminal ifconfig You should see a new ethernet adaptor listed, such as en2 or en3. If you are not in the vicinity of an open wireless network, move your computer to one to test that you connect. You should then be able to setup the network name to connect to and the Network settings in the system Preferences. If you can't connect, do an extra restart after setting up your settings, or change the location to something else and back (its a little flakey). 7) Install KisMac KisMAC012a per the instructions and choose to install the Wireless Driver Patch. [Group, what is the latest version of KisMac that can run in Jaguar? I guessed this is the latest one for Jaguar, but correct me if I am wrong.] When finished using your wireless card, shutdown before removing it, as the OS is not too keen on removal of the card and you may have system crashes. Power Off card in the menu bar does not work - it just comes right back, so shut down to remove the card. Panther (10.3.9) I tried version 1.0.0 b5 of the SourceForge Wireless Driver and it is completely nonfunctional in 10.3.9. I think Apple did something in this last release of Panther to break it and I saw such speculation in the forums. Panther (10.3.3) Functionality achieved: Mac OS X Panther is really not a good operating system for Prism 2 based wireless cards and KisMac. My recommendation if you want to use KisMac with theSourceForge driver and a high sensitivity card is to go back to Jaguar, or forward to Tiger. Follow steps 1 - 6 above for general use of your Wireless Card. KisMac 0.12a kernal panicked when I tried to scan months ago and I heard similar results from at least one other person in posts. I don't know about other versions (not having time to reformat my Panther drive to take it back level to 10.3.3 after trying 10.3.9 in order to try R62). Tiger (10.4.2) Functionality achieved: You should be able to connect to Wireless networks and use KisMac. WirelessMac sets the Mac address inside of info.plist but the Wireless driver will not pick it up and will not use it, apparently not even with the modrak patch. 1) Install version Beta 6 of the SourceForge Wireless Driver according to the instructions. 2) Insert your wireless card and determine the IOName of your card using the command /usr/sbin/ioreg -l | grep pccard 3) In the terminal issue the su command to become the root user and then cd into /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext/Contents. 4) Edit the info.plist file and look for the following section. <key>everything else</key> <dict> <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>org.noncontiguous.WirelessDriver</string> <key>IOClass</key> <string>org_noncontiguous_WirelessDriver</string> <key>IOMACAddress</key> <string>00:11:22:33:44:55</string> <key>IONameMatch</key> <array> <string>pccard156,2</string> <string>pccard1eb,807</string> <string>pccard274,1613</string> <string>pccard274,1612</string> <string>pccard138,2</string> If your card is not already present, follow the pattern to add it at the bottom of the list. 5) Save the file and SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER FOR A COLD BOOT. You can leave the card inserted through the remainder of these steps. (The Wireless driver is a little flakey and may not recognize the card right away, even with a warm boot, so a cold boot should get it working with your card.) 6) Restart your computer, and verify the card is recognized by issuing the folling command in Terminal ifconfig You should see a new ethernet adaptor listed, such as en2 or en3. If you are not in the vicinity of an open wireless network, move your computer to one to test that you connect. You should then be able to setup the network name to connect to and the Network settings in the system Preferences. If you can't connect, do an extra restart after setting up your settings, or change the location to something else and back (its a little flakey). 7) Install KisMac R63 or later per the instructions and choose to install the Wireless Driver Patch. I used KisMac R67, the latest one with a prebuilt installer. 8) Install modrak patch to wireless driver to enable operation with KisMac. (This was also advertised as allowing changing of Mac address of the PRISM based card.) The next few steps come from http://www.netstumbler.org/archive/index.php/t-15852.html and http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1219280&group_id=34453&atid=411312 9) Download http://3web.dkm.cz/modrak/WirelessDriver.kext.zip [Note: The source for the modrak patch has not been posted or shared to my knowlege. I am hoping that someone comes forward with it so it can be merged into the CVS along with the susumu fix of July. I did not install the Susumu fix, as I chose the modrak patch instead.] 10) Unpack the kext to /System/Library/Extensions/ -- you'll need to authenticate.. 11) In Terminal, execute the following commands su (enter root password) chown -R root /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext chgrp -R wheel /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext Also, you will need to reinsert your card's IOName in the info.plist file if you had to do it above. Do so at this time. 12) PERFORM A COLD BOOT. |

A person going by the name of "modrak" has posted a fix for the Wireless Driver to allow use with Kismac in Tiger, along with instructions at http://www.netstumbler.org/archive/index.php/t-15852.html and http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1219280&group_id=34453&atid=411312 These web pages contain a link to a binary (http://3web.dkm.cz/modrak/WirelessDriver.kext.zip) and he/she offered to share source code. I tried to email to request this version of the source code, but could only guess at the email address and my message failed, so I post publicly hoping he/she is on the forums. Antoine, you might want to note for your "little guide to MAC address customization" that this "modrak" version indicates it allows the Mac Address to be set in Tiger. (I didn't test it yet because I just got Tiger and am having an issue with the official Beta 6 (which I decided to try first) not recognizing my card even though it did in Jaguar.) Narita Susumu also posted a bug fix at http://homepage.mac.com/mindtools/WirelessCard.zip to correct "[ 933643 ] Kernel Pnic after Kick Out" I hope both the modrak and susumu fixes can be brought together into the main code in cvs. |

Hello there, I am trying to get the drivers to work under panther (10.3.9) with the latest build of the driver (beta 6 for tiger) and my Linksys WPC11. I am having a bit of a hard time. When I load the prefpane or the config tool everything is disabled and I am unable to configure the network. So I tried building my own kext for panther using xCode 2.1 (with panther SDK). Same problem. I get the following message in the console log : "WirelessDriver: Couldn't find a WirelessDriver service in registry - is the card loaded?". When I try to load the kext with kextload (-t) I get the following error: Missing dependencies { "com.apple.iokit.IOPCCardFamily" = "A valid compatible version of this dependency cannot be found" "com.apple.kernel.iokit" = "A valid compatible version of this dependency cannot be found" "com.apple.kpi.bsd" = "A valid compatible version of this dependency cannot be found" "com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily" = "A valid compatible version of this dependency cannot be found" } Anyone could help? Is there a Panther binary out there? Many thanks, Matth |

Hi. I have a mac powerbook g3 with a brown keyboard (second gen I think) running OS X 10.1.5. I installed the wireless driver package for this version and am using an Orinoco Silver 802.11b card. Everything installed fine, WEP works fine, and the card gets it's IP address from the dhcp server. The problem is that the network is extremely slow when using this config. I can get to any website, but it very slow (takes several minutes to load). Any idea what could be the problem? Thanks. --Ven |

I'm sure this has already been asked if this list is still active, but I could not find a way to search the list archives and the SF web page hasn't been updated in ages. Does WirelessDriver work with Tiger? What's the latest on this project? Is it still maintained? Thanks! |

Hi All- I have a powerbook 12" and I've been trying to figure out how to get an external antenna setup. I read a little about the Lucent Orinoco Gold USB cards that used to have the PC cards in them and could be moded to have an external antenna, but does anyone know number one if the wireless driver supports either of these two devices (buffalo airstation USB or proximo USB) and number two if the proximo orinoco gold USB adapter is built the same way as it's older brother the lucent (with a pc card?)? Thanks, Greg |

It's a sad story. I bought one half year ago. Never worked on Mac OS X. Runs perfectly on Windows... :( D-Link = Pc only support.. Mac support = *?@!! I know this doesn't really help, but I just want to state : stay away from their products on Mac. I am trying to install the OSX driver for my Enterasys WiFi 802.11 DS High Rate PC card. I pestered wegener media until they sent me the driver; or what I hoped was the driver. The install instructions said to not use the regular installer, but to install the three packages ConfigApps.pkg, WirelessDriver.pkg, and PrefPane.pkg separately. The first two appeared to install correctly but the PrefPane.pkg delivered the can't do message which I attached; there was no default & OSX is on Zephyr II. The tech goes over my head early; I'm the bozo that just wants the card to work. Thanks for any help, Dennis Reed <ch...@wh...> |

The site guide seems to show that WEP status on the Bronzes isn't clear, so I thought I'd help with that. On my card, and I'm guessing the rest, it has written on the bottom that the card does not support WEP, so I doubt you could get it to work however hard you tried with the drivers ;) |
