I created a web page that documented my experinece to get the WirelessDriver working and wanted everyone's opinion/comments. Is there something I'm missing or should add that could be helpful to new individuals as a reference guide? http://www.musox.com/macosx/wirelessdriver.html Justin -- Imagine a world without hypothetical situations http://www.musox.com |

Stacy Rosenstock's instructions worked perfectly, with one deviation. To delete the files, I had to boot into OS 9 first. Even with permissions adjusted, I couldn=B9t delete them in OS X. But when I rebooted, I immediatel= y saw the LED's on the Orinoco Silver card blink once and I received a messag= e that a new ethernet adapter was found. I opened the Network panel, chose it with DHCP and clicked Apply Now. I now have wireless in my laptop again and can surf on my campus' wireless network. Thank you so much. --=20 John W. After nearly a week of trying to install wirelessdriver on a WallStreet and no hint of EN1 or EN2 I consulted the OSX gurus on Broadbandreports.com russotto suggested I try removing /System/Library/Extensions.mkext and /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache. then reboot. Sure enough, after the restart, I inserted ,I inserted my Skyline and the light began to blink, Then I was finally able to select EN1 in in the Network System Preferences. Hope this can help anyone else having problems with the installation. Stacy |

Nils, Thanks. The Install PDF file shows WirelessConfig in the top menu as well as the Others Menu but, it also shows Fruit installed. Maybe they used Fruit to put it in the upper window? I still haven't had a successful install so I un-installed, double checked it with Find FIle, and then ran Disk Utility to verify permissions. Turns out I needed to reset the permissions but that doesn't seem to resolved my install issues. So after yet another attempt at installing Wirelessdriver I ran the Troubleshooting script Here's a sniplet from the results ### wireless driver files installed drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 102 Mar 4 10:34 WirelessDriver.kext drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 102 Jan 29 21:54 IOPCCardFamily.kext 2003-03-04 10:49:55.747 defaults[485] The domain/default pair of (loginwindow, AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary) does not exist /Volumes/WirelessDriver beta 5.1/Utilities/Troubleshooting Info.command: WirelessConfig: command not found logout I don't know what this actually means but something seems to be missing. Hello- I installed version 1.0.0b5 of the wireless driver on my powerbook for use with a WaveLan Silver card. I couldn't get it to list the card as an ethernet interface and ran the uninstaller. Since then I've been getting kernel panics in two situations: 1) When changing the power supply while the computer is asleep. If I put it to sleep while it is using the power adapter, unplug it so it's using the battery, and wake it, panic occurs. Same if switching from battery to AC. 2) I inserted a Memorex PC card compact flash adapter, and it gave a panic. What should I do now? After installing the beta4 wireless driver on my PowerBook G3 (bronze) I can connect to my network for 1 minute then loose connection. I can see that this is because of some king of arp problem on my laptop. If I run arp -d 10.0.0.249 I can access my server again until 1 minute passes again. If I switch to my ethernet connection all is ok, this only happens on my wireless link. I have a Orinoko gold card (Lucent chipset) which seems to work ok in OS9 on the same machine. Looks like some kind of arp poisoning problem, can anyone help. David |

My wireless config has always been in the other section, and I believe it's supposed to be there. If I don't remember wrong, after a first installation you should use the uninstall option and then install again. There was something that failed in the first install process and I think that this solved the problem for many users. I have a PB Bronze keyboard, Proxim Skyline card and the first version of the Airport BS. I must have had luck, I only installed once under 10.2 and it worked after a restart of my Airport BS. Then I've succesfully installed all OS X upgrades up to 10.2.4, and the wireless driver is still working. /Nils >I think I've tried just about everything imaginable but I just can't get Wirelessdriver to install on my WallStreet which is running OS 10.2.4 > >So far I've enabled the root user. I think I've tried just about everything imaginable but I just can't get Wirelessdriver to install on my WallStreet which is running OS 10.2.4 So far I've enabled the root user. Then I removed the card, logged in as root, and went through the install process. When I restarted the computer, WirelessConfig appears in "other" portion of System Preferences but not in the upper right hand next to network. Then when I try to set the port, EN1 and EN2 don't appear and WirelessConfig won't accept any text. It doesn't seem to have a plist either. I just updated OS X a week or two and this is the first time I've tried to install Wirelessdriver. Has anyone had any luck with first time installations with this system upgrade? Stacy |

1) Are there any mailing lists that are dedicated to discussing the Linksys (or other brands) 802.11g cards in Macs? Or discussion boards? 2) The soon-to-be-released MacSense universal driver that will support Intersil-based 802.11g PC cards won't work with the WPC54G, will it? 3) Problem: PowerBook G4s (400 MHz & 1 GHz) both freeze on startup if the Linksys WPC54G is IN the computer, no matter if it was in when the computer was on and then shut down, or if it was inserted when the computer was already shut down. When the computer is already on, I can put in the PC card, and it works fine, connects to the internet, etc. However, if it's in when it's started up, the circular thingie stops spinning after a few minutes, and it just sits there, visually frozen. I've waited about 5 minutes after that point to make sure it was frozen, should I wait longer? There is no internal AirPort card installed in one of the machines, and there is one on the other machine, it seems to make no difference. The card works because I did the "Infamous AirPort Extreme hack" from www.osxhax.com. The annoying part of this problem is that when I insert the card after the computer has started up, I have to open the Network prefs in System Preferences and apply the settings, and even then it won't automatically connect to the network, I have to select it from the AirPort menu. 4) Bluetooth seems to be messed up when the Linksys card is in and using the external D-Link Bluetooth adapter. Anyone else experiencing this? --jonathan |

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Hi Mark, you'll probably get more sophisticated answers to your questions than mine, but I hope the following will also be helpful. Remember that you indeed were required to supply your 'root' password to install the driver. One reason for this is that for it to run at the system level, the driver needs those privileges. So even though the 'uninstaller' has apparently failed in its job (no change after logout/login?), you can still remove the driver, you just may need to do it from the command line using 'sudo' to authenticate your status as administrator of your computer. Anything free comes with no guarantee, and the traffic on this list proves that the details of using this driver are not flawless and lots of users have troubles getting everything to show up at first. I agree with all you have said, and unfortunately this is one of the inconveniences to be endured for the potential benefit from open source software. Having said that, if you are in need of more precise instructions for getting these things removed, it would be my pleasure to work with you further by email. I have gotten such excellent support from the various email forums for the open source projects that I use, that I'm just itching to provide some real help to another user when possible. Kind Regards, --Michael |

My Lucent Orinoco Silver card will not enable with the drivers on a WallStreet G3 (upgraded with BlueChip G3/500). I ran the troubleshooting script and the output is pasted below. When I open the Network Pane, the EN1 option is grayed out and I also do not get a power light on the card while in OS X, only in OS 9 (so I know the card works). Can you help? Hello, I've decided to go with another wireless driver and would really like to remove all traces of this one. The removal utility distributed through the web site does not seem to change anything. I still have a folder called WirelessDriver PPane.prefPane and the application SigMeter sitting in my applications folder. These cannot be thrown away manually, as they request the root user. As far as I can remember, I have never messed with the system at the root level, so I have no idea what the permissions may be to do this. Has anyone out there written a better uninstall script or know of a way around this problem? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. -- Mark E. Hey guys, I tried taking a look in the archives before asking this question, however I couldn't find an answer. I installed the latest release, rebooted and popped in the Orinoco card. No go, no happy lights on the card and according to the software no signal either. However my airport card is happy as a clam. I turned off AirPort but no change. My machine is a 1ghz 15" TiBook. OS 10.2.4. Any ideas? I can't come up with anything, and I could be missing the obvious. Chris |

Hello all, First I would like to document how I was able to get the wireless network setup. Setup: I am using an Orinoco Gold card I installed the 10.0.0b5.1 WirelessDriver driver on a PowerBook G3 333 Lombard running 10.2.4 by clicking on the individual installers located in the "Installers" folder. There was an issue in that the PreferencePane was installed in /System/Library/PreferencePanes/. I just typed the command in the terminal (sudo mv "/System/Library/PreferencePanes/WirelessDriver PPane.prefPane" /Library/PreferencePanes/). When I installed the ConfigApps.pkg it placed the SigMeter and the WirelessConfig in a custom folder (Not the default Applications folder). The next step was to install the Utilities by the command (sudo cp "/Volumes/WirelessDriver beta 5.1/Utilities/WirelessConfig" /usr/local/bin/) and copied the Troubleshooting Info.command to the same folder as the SigMeter and WirelessConfig applications were located. When I first executed the Troubleshooting Info.command I noticed I didn't receive all of the information it was requesting so I modified the command on line 17 to read "ls -la /System/Library/Extensions | grep AirPort" (there is a capital "P" to make this work) My Access Point is D-Link614+, which also allows my wife's Windows XP machine to connect via a D-Link PCI card. Issues: I cannot enable WEP (64 or 128) even though the FAQ on the WirelessDriver Homepage states that 128 WEP is supported on the Orinoco Gold card. If I do, the card cannot acquire an IP from the AP (DHCP on the LAN side is enabled). When I had WEP enabled and executed the Troubleshooting Info.command, it still stated at the bottom "WEP Enabled: NO". My work around is using MAC address filtering so only the two specific machines that I want can access the AP. As a FYI, the Firewall is disabled. The SigMeter doesn't work. I did see the message from Tom Pollard about the missing SigStrength.nib file, however, when I attempted to replicate his solution it didn't work. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=1669293&forum_id=3055 <http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=1669293&forum_id=3055> Questions: Is there a "Stumbler" that can search for SSIDs. MacStumbler kept quiting upon startup, iStumbler said it only supported AirPort Cards at this time, KisMac didn't work, and I can't compile AirSnort b/c Fink is not letting me download the GTK+ after I installed Apple's X11. Could/is the WEP issue be resolved by a new AP? I noticed that some is requesting D-Link DWL 650+ support and in the faq.html on the WirelessDriver Homepage there is "NO" on both support and WEP. Wireless Card address increasing. When I first started to test the driver, I borrowed a Linksis card to see if the driver worked. I then borrowed an Orinoco Card to see if that worked and began troubleshooting. I now have a third card (Orinoco) and I have noticed that the BSD names keep on increasing. The Linksis was originally en1, the 1st Orinoco card was en2, now I'm on en3. Is there any way to remove the old card BSD names so that my current card reads en1. Guess I'm just picky on that... Any replies/comments would be greatly appreciated on both of these questions. My Troubleshooting Info.command results are available at http://www.musox.com/macosx/802.11_info.txt <http://www.musox.com/macosx/802.11_info.txt> Thanks, Justin |

It doesn't save the settings for the=20 wireless config prefpane for the wireless driver. It has to be set=20 manually for each different wireless network. I guess that if there was=20= a way to make the wireless config pref pane a plug in to the Network=20 preferences (an extra tab similar to how Airport settings work) then it=20= would be possible to save the setting in different locations. //Rob -- =20 To be is to do. - Socrates To do is to be. - Sartre Do be do be do. - Sinatra |

Does that get saved with each location or do you have select the wireless pref pane and enter the relevant name after each switch? It is still possible to use Broadcom-based=20 802.11g CardBus and PCI cards (Linksys and Buffalo are the two most=20 popular vendors) using The Infamous Hack (see http://www.osxhax.com/).=20 There are some caveats, however. Hi All Just to say after a bit of fiddling I got the beta 10.0.0b5 driver to work on a Powerbook G3 Pismo / OS 10.2(6C115), Asante FriendlyNET AeroLAN PCMCIA. With a straight install I could the System pref pane but none of the text fields were active. I could not install the PrefPane.pkg - told I could not install in the System:Library:PreferencePanes One of these two things or the combination worked: 1) Logged on as root, and reinstalled all four pkg's 2) Installed PrefPane.pkg into Library: as the Troubleshooting info suggested this should be. On a different machine so can't include report as I have too install all software etc and I knew if I didn't do it now then it would slip! - but if it would be useful email me and I'll post it Big thanks to the authors for keeping my wife's laptop going for another OS version! I installed the driver (Beta 5.1) under an earlier version of 10.2 and upgraded to 10.2.4 later.
