Hello group: I have been a successful user of the Orinoco Gold card on my first generation T1 power book now using Jaguar ( OS X.2.4) for several months. Today I was playing around and I went to the icon of the Orinoco card in the menu bar and --- selected "Power off Card'. The icon disappeared and there was no way to turn the card back on. I simply restarted the computer and the card powered on - and its icon it reappeared in the menu bar. There must be an easier way to turn the card on and off- does anyone know how? Taka, Does your work network provide DHCP services? If not, you will never get an address. I have a static address at my work. Additionally, some wireless networks, for security reasons, do not allow ad-hoc clients. This means that the IT folks will need add your card's MAC Address (or Ethernet Address for en1 in Network Preferences, it will look something like this - 00:3d:65:b5:15:4e) to the wireless router so you can be recognized and given an IP address. Did the ORiNOCO Silver in an AirPort slot (G4 Sawtooth) trick to upgrade the firmware to 128 bit and nothing died (perhaps my trouble was the AirPort was running 128bit WEP and the Silver only handles 40, or 64 or whatever.) As a matter of fact, on rebooting Sawtooth the Silver was immediately recognized as an Ethernet adapter in the Network Preference panel and I had two network connections with two different IPs. Cool! Didn't fry the Silver and it could talk with the AirPort (picked up IP immediately from the Asante router that is acting as DHCP server) But then... Tom - Read your missive. Thanks. Were you able to get Silver to work with WEP? I got mine to work simply by turning off WEP on my snow AirPort, but I'm not terribly happy about it.... I found that the WirelessDriver.kext actually was installed by the installer. However, no WirelessConfig Preference Pane ever showed up in my System Preferences. I used the WirelessConfig application to connect it to our network. Musox - Congrats on BlueToothing your Lombard! Nice site. Nice MacKitties. I tried your suggestion of running each installer separately. ConfigApps.pkg installed in Applications just peachy. PrefPane.pkg installed in the default location fine, because I could not get it to install in /Library/PreferencePanes/ - that folder was "greyed out" and if I typed it directly into the Browse's Go to: field and hit Open I got a *beep* and was returned to the installer. I let it install it in the default location, then planned on copying it to /Library/PreferencePanes/ but when I tried that I got an error in the Terminal that it was a directory not a file. *sigh* Not brave enough to dive any further into Unix yet. Finally I ran WirelessDriver.pkg and when I selected the only disk to install it on I got the red "!" and it said "cannot install on that disk (null)", but when I hit the Go Back button and then Continue again, all was green and I could then install on Carole(Lombard)'s hard drive. Maybe another aspect of the double install to work.... Still looking for WEP, since the FAQ said it would work on the Silver. Has anyone here gotten a WaveLAN Silver based card to use WEP? How about with one of the pay drivers? >On Thursday 13 March 2003 02:26 am, Jim Mueller wrote: >> I just spent several hours with my 333 Lombard X.2.4 trying to get my >> ner ORiNOCO silver to work with our AirPort. Hi, I've been using the Wireless Driver in various versions for almost two years and it was working perfectly on a Lombard Powerbook G3 under 10.2.3 until last week when the Orinoco Gold card I was using went a little nuts. The computer would lock up after 10 minutes of use and the card's power lamp would be stuck on. The computer always had to be hard restarted. The PC slot is fine, used a Firewire card in it to check. So I put aside the Orinoco and acquired a NetGear MA401 card based on the compatibility table in the FAQ. The Netgear does not seem to be recognized! That is, the alternate ethernet "en1" is not showing up in the "Newtork" control panel as an option under "Show" like it always did with the Orinoco. Reinstalled the driver Beta 5-1 twice just to be sure. The Orinoco still dies after a few minutes and the Netgear is still ignored. The LED does illuminate on the NetGear. Did I make a bad choice from the FAQ list? Could or would NetGear have changed the MA401 card? Is there like a file I need to trash? Below I have pasted in the output from the troubleshooting script. any ideas? I sorry if I was confusing you. I read through the FAQ's - as had a number of others on the macaddict forum. I didn't try the install twice method - I will when I get home ( I'm away from my card and airport for a while). I just dumped OS X and reinstalled 9.2 for a while. Thank you for the driver and the reply - I'll let you know what worked. Ted Buck |

OK, here's my dilemma and I've searched the archives with no luck. I have a tibook with a wpc-11. It finally worked at my home network, but now I'm at work and it won't work. I go to the wireless control panel and it has a near full signal, but when I go to the network pane, it has a self assigned ip and no router address. It was just working last night however. What do i do? I really don't want to purchase the 25 dollar version, but may have to. Thanks ahead of time Taka |

I just spent several hours with my 333 Lombard X.2.4 trying to get my ner ORiNOCO silver to work with our AirPort. Reading what I can follow of your post confirms my suspicion that getting it to work may be beyond me. I used the 1.0.0b5 installer and SigMeter and WirelessConfig wound up loose in my Applications folder, and I had to run the kextload... Terminal commands to get the ethernet interface recognized, but a WirelessConfig preference pane never showed up in my System Preferences. I could use the WirelessConfig that was put in my Applications and once the interface was recognized I could enter our network name. I'm glad you said you could not get WEP to work 'cause that's what we have set up. Now I know why I couldn't get it to grab an address, though even when I entered valid settings manually I still could not connect. When I ran the uninstaller from the 1.0.0b5 download it died saying it could not find some files. The uninstaller from the FAQ web page worked fine, but the reinstall put everything in the wrong places again. I noticed a new menu bar icon that showed a PC card and it gave the option to Power Down the card which I accidently did. There appeared to be no way to power it back up since the icon then disappeared. I ejected the care and reinserted it, knowing that the KernelPanic had been fixed with 10.2. Well, evidently the process I went through caused the Kernel to Panic, so I just shut the blasted thing down and joined this list. I have a Ti with airport card and am trying to connect to an AP using a Dlink 520 card without success. Mac Stumbler sees the dlink but I don't connect. I tried downloading WirelessDriverBeta5_1.dmg.sit along with SigMeter.tar.gz to no avail. Couldn't enter anything in the set up window. Even bought a netgear card and while trouble shooter saw the card, I couldn't enter anything in the driver window. Finally, gave up on that. Any ideas would be appreciated as I'm at a dead end. Hi, In regards to experience with an Airport Extreme Basestation. I have helped a friend set up his home network: Airport Extreme Basestation, 15" TiBook w/802.11b Airport card, 12" TiBook w/Airport Extreme (802.11g) card, Wallstreet w/Orionco Silver pc card (802.11b). Base station is configured with defaults, except it was set to not broadcast its name (closed), WEP was originally configured, but now turned off. SMNP access is off. WAN access is off. All communicate through base station and get IPs. All print through base station, IP printing in the case of the Wallstreet. All work with or without WEP turned on. All get stronger signal than Snow base station which was replaced, a second 15" TiBook (400) used to get lousy reception if it was further than about 20 feet from the Snow. Now it gets a strong signal anywhere in the house. Try to order the one with both internal and external antenna EL-2011CD-EXT. I've used both and both work well. If you need an antenna for the EL-2011CD, I just ordered one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3405739877 That I will be testing later this week. Oh, and the IOXperts driver also works with this card. Lee Lee Wilmeth, Computer Consultant 1104 Cypress CT Mansfield, TX 76063-2608 817-905-9078 iChat or AIM ID lee...@ma... www.wilmeth.net |

Does anyone know if the EL-2011CD wireless PC card will work in a Mac Powerbook? I know the 2511 version works but it's priced about $100. The 2011CD is available at JustDeals.com for $40, and it has 2 external antenna ports and 100 mW power, so it's a very nice combination at a very attractive price. M. Longo (ml...@um...) |

Hi, So far, I have exactly the same experience that you're having. I have a Wallstreet PB and a ThinkPad with ORiNOCO silver cards. I also have an iBook. The iBook has no trouble connecting to the Airport Extreme, no matter what the settings. The ThinkPad can connect under Win XP if I turn off WEP. The Wallstreet can connect under OS 9, but not under OS X. However, I can administer the Airport from OS X if I connect the Wallstreet directly to the Airport through the ethernet cable. However, that fact doesn't help me to connect wirelessly from OS X. None of the system have any trouble connecting to my original (gray UFO) Airport base station. I just updated the faq to include many requests, and restored the troubleshooting script and un-installer links. If you have additional suggestions please send them to me (sending some html to add directly to the faq would be the best). Also if you can report on wep success for the cards listed in the faq, I would appreciate it. Yuriwho ___________ WirelessDriver project manager READ THE FAQ! Chances are, it will contain your answer. http://wirelessdriver.sourceforge.net/faq.html |

I was advised by a retailer that I could use an Orinoco Gold card with = 802.11g and the Airport Extreme base station with my MAC LOMBARD PB. Does anyone have experience with this combo ? Was MacWarehouse dreaming that there was compatibility? My Lombard 333 won't pick up evidence of the base station when 10.2 is = engaged. When I boot from 9.1, I the signal is there, but the base station but I = have been told that the Airport can only be configured from OS10. Catch 22. Any ideas / experience ? On the website, it seems that the troubleshooting script has been taken down. (the utilities directory is empty) and the SourceForge download site does not contain the troubleshooting script. No mirrors, so I (and probably others) are SOL. (Please email me the latest if you get a chance or add to the FAQ as to why it's not there anymore...) This is a shame, as I am trying to diagnose a problem on my two powerbooks using the Lucent WaveLan Silver cards. (proxim iteration) I am typing from a Windows laptop with one of them just fine, so it's not a card or AP issue (Using an AP-200)... Here is what's going on: OSX does identify that we have the Lucent Technologies Silver Card in the PC Card slot (Little card icon in the upper right says in greyed out letters "Lucent Technologies WaveLAN/IEEE") . No lights turn on (as if the driver is not binding to the PC Card, perhaps?) The WirelessConfig is there in the System preferences, but no en1 device in the Network System Preference panel. I installed WirelssDriverBeta5_1.dmg.sit. My OS is 10.2.4. No other wireless drivers have been installed. Please help! I am happy to mirror the troubleshooting script as a way of contributing. Hell, I'll mirror the whole main project page, if someone wants. Thanks so much. |

I am running a Powerbook G3 amber keyboard, no firewire with an orinoco=20= silver card. Everything is working fine. However, my=20 /var/log/system.log file is being filled up every second by an error=20 message: Mar 7 13:16:15 server mach_kernel: org_noncontiguous_WirelessDriver:=20 wi_get_cur_ssid no record available. Default is: Pasik Manhattan, len:=20= 15 Can this be fixed? Also the kmodstat command is not found when I attempt: sudo kmodstat -n com.apple.iokit.IOPCCardFamily or sudo kmodstat -n org.noncontiguous.WirelessDriver Any help here? Alexander J. I just wanted to follow up and say that removing those two files did the trick. (I backed em up just in case.) /System/Caches/Extensions.mkext /System/Caches/Extensions.kextcache - cb |

In the terminal: sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache You will be prompted for a password for the first "sudo" command. (one could probably remove both files with one command, but I'm skittish when I use "sudo" and "rm" together.) If you just want to move the files instead of deleting them, try sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions.mkext ~/Desktop/Extensions.mkext sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache ~/Desktop/Extensions.kextcache That will move them to your desktop with privileges intact, and in case of disaster, one could conceivably move them back... <CYA>If your Mac blows up, melts down, or otherwise becomes inoperable without either or both of these files, don't hold me responsible.
