Dear Kori, It's all grayed out because it says there is no wireless strength. I'm not allowed to type anything. But I've tried switching my router signal between all of the 11 channels. All seem to not help. Can anyone confirm this is a 32-bit port on the Laptop? I can't seem to find and confirm that, although, it does fit well, and the Mac does 'see' the card. I appreciate everyone's time. Hello there I installing everything according but when I goto Network Prefs the en1 option does not even show up. I ran the troubleshooting command and this is what it gave me. I need help. I'm a Mac and wireless newbie. I've got an older = PowerBook G4 400MHz with 128MB RAM running the latest OS 10.x (always = keep it upto date). I bought the D-Link DL-624 router and D-Link = DWL-G650 Air Plus Xtreme G 2.4GHz air card from www.buy.com and as luck = would have it the DWL-G650 air card isn't working in my powerbook. I = can't figure it out. The Powerbook sees the card. When I installed the = sourceforge.net drivers (also tried the IOExpert drivers) both drivers = claim there is no signal. My first question is how do I know if my = PowerBook G4 airport card slot is 32-bit? My second question is can = anyone try to advise me on how I can at least get my Aircard to see a = signal from the router? The card is 6 inches from the router antena. = Note the air card has one light that blinks on and off about every 10 = seconds. I would have assumed if there was a signal it would be solid = intead of blink. I've tried talking to D-Link but they refuse to help = me. I've also tried switching channels on the router. I know channel 6 = is the 108mbps channel. So I've tried 10, 11, and 12, and none seem to = help my air card detect a signal. Bummer. Please help me. Sincerely, Douglas |

I did erase and installs of Panther on a G3 (bronze) and a G4 Ti. Both the Lucent Gold and Silver cards that I have are working fine with the older driver. Installation was smooth and didn't require some of the re-installs that have been needed in the past. Good luck (and FWIW Panther is great). - Joe >ditto - any response on this yet ? >On Friday, October 10, 2003, at 09:27 AM, Carl Edlund Anderson wrote: > >> >>Has anyone tried the current (somewhat aged) version of >>wirelessdriver while running Panther? Jean-Pierre, You are supposed to have a WirelessDriver PPane.prefPane installed in /library/PreferencePanes Apparently it did not get installed. Find it in your downloaded package and move it to the proper place. After restarting, go to System Preferences and you will see a WIRELESS CONFIG panel. Use it to set up the name of your WAP, encryption, etc. Kori Ms. Kori Lessing Systems Development Engineer Application Development Systems Ohio State University 1121 Kinnear Rd 614-247-6121 les...@it... > > Message: 1 > Date: Thu, 01 Jan 2004 18:56:50 +0100 > From: Jean-Pierre Mabille <jpm...@fr...> > To: <wir...@li...> > Subject: [Wirelessdriver-support] Orinoco gold don't switch on (Pwb G4 > 15") > > Bonjour, > > I have an ORiNOCO Gold Card and a PowerBook G4 15" running 10.3.2 > The installation of the wireless driver seems fine (I see the new > ethernet > en2 port) > But the two green lights of the card do not flash, as they do on my > powerbook G3 running OS 9.2 (The card works perfectly on the G3). Bonjour, I have an ORiNOCO Gold Card and a PowerBook G4 15" running 10.3.2 The installation of the wireless driver seems fine (I see the new ethernet en2 port) But the two green lights of the card do not flash, as they do on my powerbook G3 running OS 9.2 (The card works perfectly on the G3). They give a very brief flash every 5 seconds or so. Once the gold card inserted, a new icon appears in the menu bar, where I se= e "switch on the card" wWhen I do so, the icon disappears from the menu bar and nothing else... Hello, What is the status of USB support? I saw it mentioned in the FAQ, and I currently have several Atmel-based USB wireless adapters, but cannot use them under Mac OS (they're from Phoebe tech). Kind Regards, Urban Weigl Avara.Net Ltd |

I am wondering, does anyone have support digests before #474 and/or devel digests before #64 that you could share with me, as I just recently subscribed to these lists? I have been noticing that the archives of the list at sourceforge have dropped a few messages, and I find digests easier to handle. Thanks in advance for any assistance. _________________________________________________________________ Take advantage of our limited-time introductory offer for dial-up Internet access. http://join.msn.com/?page=dept/dialup |

I sometimes see a signal strength value in cases where I have misentered the network name I am trying to connect to. I do not understand this, because if I enter the name of a network that does not exist, the signal strength should indicate the minimal (no signal) value. Isn't the signal strength supposed to be for the network I am connected to? If not, how do I know what network is being metered when I am in the presence of mulitple networks? Thanks in advance. _________________________________________________________________ Worried about inbox overload? Get MSN Extra Storage now! http://join.msn.com/?PAGE=features/es |

After I use my wireless card with the sourceforge wireless driver and I am finished using the Internet and then I choose "Power Off Card" from the card menu at the upper right, I find that my card repowers up automatically, causing me to crash due to the wireless driver bug regarding removal and reinsertion of cards. Any idea why? I am using Jaguar 10.2.6. >If you turn the card off in Jaguar, or Panther that bug seems to have been >fixed by Apple. > >Rob >On Dec 6, 2003, at 8:37 AM, Java Nut wrote: > >>Does the new code base fix the bug related to removal and reinsertion of >>cards that crashes the system? I am running os x 10.2.8 on a powerbook g4 Linksys : Wireless-B Router Model Number: WPC11 v.4 Linksys: Wireless-B PCMCIA Notebook Adapter 802.11b I downloaded WirelessDriver Beta 5-1. I double clicked the installer from the Disk Image. Installer said that it installed correctly, but when I rebooted, no e1. I tried several things. 1. I issued the commands in root. kextload /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext rm -f /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache rm -f /System/Library/Extensions.mkext These seemed to go fine. Reboot, still no network recognition. 2. I also tried to move the contents of the Disk Image and run from my HD. These seemed to go fine. Reboot, still no network recognition. 3. I ran the installer a couple times. Still nothing. Thanks for the help. (http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2003/debian-powerpc-200312/ msg00521.html). It has a link to a page with some test data for using certain cards for 802.11g with Linux, but some of the info may be of help. It looks like 802.11g for Mac is either AirPort Extreme or nothing for some time to come. Those Proxim cards look like the only thing they're good for is returning to the store. There are actually 3 "Orinoco Silver" cards that I know of: - "Classic" version -- HERMES 1.0 controller -- basically the old WaveLAN Silver card, very widely supported. - 8421-WD (gold version is 8420-WD) -- Uses a HERMES 2.0 controller. Not widely supported, but could be supported by current drivers if they implement firmware download and find a way to get & use an Agere firmware image legally. Otherwise fairly similar to HERMES 1.0 from the driver's perspective. - a/b, a/b/g combo cards: Atheros AR5000 chipset. Needs completely new driver, but has a very good radio. - b/g combo card: unknown chipset (could be either Atheros or Broadcom, my guess is Atheros). Possibly an Agere HERMES 2.0 if Agere has actually started shipping a g version (they weren't last I knew). > Is there a best-bet PCMCIA card you could recommend that uses the > Lucent/Agere/Intersil/Corporate-entity-du-jour? Not really. Proxim is still selling the HERMES 1.0 cards as "Orinoco Classic", but they are b only. They do work nicely with everyone's driver, though. > Also, has the Broadcom and Atheros regime taken over with the > 802.11g range of products? Pretty much. Atheros and Broadcom have almost all of the 802.11a and 802.11g market between them. Intersil's PRISM GT & PRISM Duette aren't very popular so far, and are yet another chipset design. Agere hasn't shipped a g-capable version of the HERMES yet, as far as I know. It's quite a mess being a driver developer right now :-). Amanda Walker |

The Orinoco combo cards are based on an Atheros chipset, not the Lucent/Agere/Intersil/whoever-owns-them-now chip set that the WirelessDriver and IOXperts driver support. The b/g and a/b/g chipsets are completely different, and would require a new driver written completely from scratch. Because of the nature of the Broadcom and Atheros chipsets, it's highly unlikely that there will ever be a completely open source driver for them, though Sam Leffler has done a good job striking a deal with Atheros for his Linux and FreeBSD drivers (the module that talks to the hardware is distributed in binary only). The big issue is that much, much more of the radio operation is exposed to the host, which makes the FCC very concerned about who should be able to twiddle the virtual knobs. Operating at frequencies and power levels that you're not licensed for is a big no-no, especially since some of the allowable bands are surrounded by military-use bands :-). List, I feel like I should start off with 12-step sort of introduction, "Hi, my name is Barry, and I am a 3rd party wireless card user for Apple PowerBooks..." This may be a quick question that confirms my fears. Is the Proxim Orinoco 802.11b/g card able to work with this driver in a 15" PowerBook G4 with no AirPort Extreme card installed running Panther (OS X 10.3.2)? I had hoped/gambled on the unit using its 802.11b as a fallback if the 802.11g didn't work, but neither this driver nor the IOXperts driver recognizes the presence of the card. If it is true that this card is mostly an expensive and awkward bookmark for me now, have folks generally been able to use Proxim Orinoco Silver 802.11b cards successfully? I had no idea that Apple was not supporting anything but AirPort cards in terms of drivers. I have had AirPort in my past two PowerBooks, but the Broadcom chip issue with the current AirPort keeps you from having open-source OS access to wireless networking with the AirPort hardware. Thanks. I may have said this before, but I bought a 3rd party (Linksys) card because my Airport functionality died around 10.2.4 or so. I thought it was hardware issue. The wireless driver operated the Linksys card fine. With 10.2.8 or so suddenly Airport came back at full strength (NO weak antenna issue at all-solid 4 bars no matter what). The Linksys PC card still works but now it's redundant of course so I removed it. Weird developments to say the least. So when I plug in the Linksys card, is Apple driving it or is the wireless driver driving it? Best Rick |

Hi Terry, Did you ever find out if the Silver Combo card is compatiable with your G-4 PB? I have the same problem and am wondering if you have an answer. Thanks. Subject: [Wirelessdriver-support] Proxim Orinoco 802.11 a/b Silver Card Compatiblity I have been using an older Lucent Orinoco Silver card with my G-4 Powerbook and Os 10.2.6 with no problems. The card was physically damaged and although it still works, I ordered a new card which I thought would be comparable to my old card, a Proxim Orinoco 802.11 a/b Silver Card. I have attempted to get the new card working, but when inserted, the Ethernet Adapter (en2) is not recognized nor visible, etc. etc. Unquote. |
