When comparing 2 files, how can I select a difference block using the mouse
?
With <2.16 it was an easy double click, now we need triple-clicking
instead, that's pita.

Or one can click, alt + bottom but then you right hand constantly needs to
switch between keyboard and mouse. PITA again

Is there a more convenient way to do it ?
Alt + single click would be great.

Or is there any configuration tweak to go back to <2.16 behaviour ?

Unfortunately, winmerge won't do this, unless the files were taken from 
the same scan.
While it has some level of image comparison, it's pretty much a yes/no, 
and has no ability to ignore image noise, realign, etc.

2 images scanned and saved in the extension *.tif.

Specifically, I would like to compare two payment orders used by the
bank, so the application needed have to determine if the payment
orders are absolutely identical (including signatures position) and to
identify if they are not.

I believe it does matching based on the full file name.
You can do a folder compare which shows mismatched files, allowing you 
to manually reconcile them.

Alternatively, use the command prompt to get a file list, modify as 
needed, then compare?

Both methods are fairly manual though.

thanks for your reaction. But folder comparison compares files by content,
right?
I need not the content to be examined, just the file name (no extension).

I use WinMerge v2.16.4.0  with the Compare Method set to "Modified Date and Size" to check that folders are synced. It has worked wonderfully with 100's of thousands of files.

I'm now seeing an error when I am comparing two jpeg files - that I know are identical. The Comparison Result is "Unable to compare files" (When I compare binary data it works fine and says they're identical.)
(I'm not positive, but I believe earlier versions of WinMerge were ok with these two files.)

I suspect the problem is that the "modify date" on the files is Wednesday, December 31, 1969 at 7:00PM. I know that's plainly absurd, but that's what it says. Nothing else on Windows seems to have any problem with the file.

Any idea what's going on here? I'd be happy to send a copy of the jpeg if anyone wants to experiment. -Steve

Hi,

I need to use command line input to winmerge tool to specify filter
parameters. I created a new filter and saved it under the Filters folders
for Winmerge tool. But I dont seem to understand what is wrong as it is not
working. Isnt this the right way? What am I missing? Does the tool support
this?

"C:\Program Files (x86)\WinMerge\WinMergeU" /f "A_FILTER.flt"
"C:\Projects\ExpectedResults\A_PAGES\"
"C:\Projects\ActualResults\A_PAGES\"

A_filter.flt is a collection of some linefilters and is saved at C:\Program
Files (x86)\WinMerge\Filters

I'm working in updating WinMerge translations into Galician and
Spanish but there is a question that arose me when I found the very
first string containing an ampersand symbol.

I understand that the ampersand represents the keyboard shortcut to be
used to trigger the option represented by the string so, is it legal
to change the letter following the ampersand? If not, what should I do
(or what do you prefer for me to do) with translated strings than do
no contain the same letter? For example:

#: Merge.rc:8AF7E6B
#, c-format
msgid "Close &Left Tabs"

In this case "Close Left Tabs" translates like "Pechar Pestanas á
Esquerda" and, as you can see, there is no L in the translated string.
Is it OK to use a different letter?

msgstr "Pechar Pestanas á &Esquerda"

Or should I indicate the character in brackets at the end of the string?

OMG! Who would have thought that? I have been wrestling with the
default setup for a decade or so not knowing the feature I desired was
there all along. I am very pleased to learn of the feature, thank you,
but sorry about all the hair I have lost.

Yeah, I know, they say RTFM. After an earlier decade of reading poorly
written manuals when evaluating software I eventually gave up on that.
If trial software doesn't work as expected I usually delete it.
Winmerge worked well enough to decide to stick with it. I see that the
manual is indeed very well written.

If they are in the same folder you can simply use the "Winmerge" context item.

What is this "extended context menu" you speak of? Like the original
poster I have always been frustrated by Winmerge's inability to easily
compare files in different folders. It's easy enough to send one file
to Winmerge but this then opens a dialog box for the 2nd file and
attempting to send the second file from the context menu gets you
nowhere. Instead you have to drag the file to the Winmerge taskbar
icon and then back the dialog box, meanwhile if you accidently drag
the cursor across the wrong part of this or any other explorer window,
Windoze sticks its nose in and starts going berserk and changes your
explorer selections. It's a real mess. Winmerge _should_ accept input
from the context menu of the second file - would be much simpler.

Not directly in WinMerge.
You may find it easier to use another utility to dump the filenames,
strip the first three characters then compare the results.
