That error suggests some bug in your proftpd configuration.
Could you post the config file to the mailing list? It should be
at /etc/proftpd.conf

Ok, the FTP server was not started, I went to boot/shutdown in system and
made it boot on startup, now its starting on boot all the time nps.

So i removed all virtual users, and started fresh, added one user (no
errors) but i try to ftp in and get :

500 Sorry, no server available to handle request on 192.168.1.141

ERROR:> Syntax error, command unrecognized.

(i took a wee peak to make sure proFTPd was started still and it is looking
ok)

I still get same error when trying to login to ftp, i also noticed when
creating a virtual server i see this :

      Setup IP-based virtual FTP? Not available


Rather than  yes/no option

maybe above has nothing at all to do with proftp? but thaught I would show
that it says 'Not available'

thanks, worked.. there are a lot of small differences in the 4.x tree,  
especially when importing/exporting with mysqldump you almost always have  
to set the "–compat=" switch. so maybe it's a good idea to offer some  
sensible values there..

You should check to make sure the FTP server is actually running on
your system, and start it if not. This is best done in the Bootup and
Shutdown module, or the ProFTPD server module.

Generally no ProFTPd configuration is needed, unless you want to have
separate per-domain anonymous FTP servers (which are rarely used). The
standard out-of-the-box config will allow domain owners to FTP in.

[webmin-l] Problems with Read Mail-module in Usermin

[<per...@gm...>]

I deleted a bunch of mail in one of the accounts in Usermin, and it
seems like the read mail-module broke.

All I get when I go to Mail/Read Mail are:

HTTP/1.0 500 Perl execution failed Server: MiniServ/0.01 Date: Tue, 27
Jun 2006 15:52:01 GMT Content-type: text/html Connection: close
Error - Perl execution failed
Modification of non-creatable array value attempted, subscript -54 at
boxes-lib.pl line 79.

It works to read the mail in Webmin, so it seems to only be contained
to that Usermin-account. Any way to reset this?

theres no more errors, It now can create/remove without any errors but I
have noticed that after it creates a virtual user, it dont seem to add
anything in the proFTPd area for that user, in other words when I try to ftp
in to this new virtual member, I get a socket error from CuteFTP :

Hi Jamie,

Runing OS 'ubuntu-desktop' build, I had the server/lamp version but it just
went crazy with webmin, then because SQL was not with the desktop version,
it was installed via the webmin area where it warns you that you dont have
SQL and then offers a link to install right away. It seems to be ok even tho
it thinks the my.cnf is not found, been creating DB's etc nps.....just done
a search to find it in :  /ect/mysql

"SQL show character set failed : You have an error in your SQL syntax.  
Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the

It's telling you that you need to edit the file /etc/shells and add
the line :

Most likely the MySQL configuration file is located somewhere else on your
system to where Webmin expects.. This is quite harmless though, as in most
cases you don't need to change settings in my.cnf.

What OS are you running there? And did you use the version of MySQL that came
with it, or one you compiled/downloaded yourself?

may need to adjust the module configuration to use the correct path.

I don't want to mess in-case I should be sticking with Virtualmin but would
like to know if it will be a problem in the future.

Try renaming /usr/lib/apache/suexec.disabled to suexec , and then
re-starting Apache.

It is actually tunneling through Webmin. To use it, you need to set
the 'Use proxy to connect to other hosts?' option to 'Yes', and in the
'Hostname to connect to' enter some other host on your webmin server's
network. Entering 'localhost' would be pointless when in proxy mode, as
it is the default destination for non-proxied connections :)

know im not going to give up and resort to Win2000 for a server.

recently...  (Stock RHEL-clone install, private server, do NOT want 
suexec, but the stock Apache2 package insisted on using it - which broke 
on my account due to default GID.)

Somewhere, there *should* be a tool to automagically do this for you 
(maybe that's Webmin? <g>)  but I don't know what Apache directive is 
generating your original problem.

You should probably visit http://httpd.apache.org and spend some time 
reading through some of the documentation there.

apt-get install suexec for ubuntu is doing nothing, can't find package, The
ubuntu irc room dont want to help with this one, like they dont know what im
talking about.

I tryed a search on my filesystem for suexec and the results so :

must be it finding the keyword within the webmin package i dnloaded to my
desktop.)

googling has totaly confuzed me, tryed to use - / + with keywords to try and
get it fined down to ubuntu/webmin/suexec help so I did not have to mess
with anything outside of virtualuser area as I been told your not to mess
with anything when virtualmin is doing the work.

Its take'n me two weeks basicly to get here with ubuntu / webmin, maybe you
could suggest a better build of linux that will give me less drama when
setting up webmin/suexec?

How does this work?  If I leave the "Hostname to connect to" option set
to "Automatic" or set it to "localhost", then it connects me to the
local SSH server on my desktop (i.e., the client where I am running the
web browser, not the Webmin server).  This seems like a bug to me.

Also, is this really "tunneling" through the Webmin server, or is it
just a direct connection from the Java applet to the SSH server?  It
seems more like the latter....

You need to install the suexec program to get rid of that error
about the User directive. It is probably in a different package on
your OS .. do you'd need to run something like  apt-get install suexec
