hello jamie, i use your new ftp remote backup in the filesystem backup module. it works quite well but two issues come up from time to time: 1) my huge /home partition is sometimes not backupped. on the remote site is a file with 0 bytes created. unfortunately, this prevents the backup on the next day.. 2) sometimes all backup.pl jobs seem to stay alive even when backup is finished which prevents the backup on next day. i help myself here with a cron job right before the backup wich killall buckup.pl - but maybe we can find out what's the problem here.. are there any logfiles i could look at, debug levels i can raise? regards, PAT |

What is needed to actually make this module work? You might want to try running the command shorewall start as root from the shell prompt. This is the command Webmin tries to call.. Running start.cgi from the command line will never work, as it is a CGI script that expects to be run from the Webmin web server. - Jamie |

Hi All, I have just installed Shorewall via Webmin and it will not start. Webmin just states it will not start and does not give a reason. When I run start.cgi from /usr/libexec/webmin/shorewall/ I get the following error... [root@ns shorewall]# ./start.cgi Undefined subroutine &main::init_config called at ./shorewall-lib.pl line 6. Compilation failed in require at ./start.cgi line 5. Why?? I looked in the config file and all the paths are wrong, there simply is no actions directory anywhere on my server nor is there an actions.std file! What is needed to actually make this module work? TIA Phil. |

Odd .. it shouldn't work at all without the colon.

No, that module config field doesn't require colons. Which is in-consistent, I admit!

indeed - that made the difference. Curious that I also had it
auto-entering a value for calFBURL (horde/imp schema) without the colon
and it entered fine but also in checking, the samba attributes that are
automatically added, I did have the colon.
In the interest of clarity, I don't have a colon in 'Extra LDAP User
properties to allow editing...' - should I be adding a colon after the
attribute?

I think I know the reason - on the Module Config page, you need to enter these extra
attributes in the format :
apple-user-homeDirectory: /Network/Servers/srv1.example.com/NetUsers/${USER}
apple-user-homeurl: <home_dir><url>afp://srv1.example.com/NetUsers/</url><path>${USER}</path></home_dir>
Note the colon after the attribute name. I will add a comment about this on the Module
Config page in the next Webmin release.

${USER} is something I have only used in webmin ldap_useradmin config so
that it replaces that token with the actual 'account' that it is
creating (the uid)
----
>

It's odd but if I put these entries in 'LDAP Properties for all new
users'...
apple-user-homeDirectory /Network/Servers/srv1.example.com/NetUsers/${USER}
<home_dir><url>afp://srv1.example.com/NetUsers/</url><path>${USER}</path></home_dir>
both are ignored when I create the user.
When I edit the already created user and enter something like (using
ldap_useradmin):
/Network/Servers/srv1.example.com/NetUsers/administrator
in apple-user-homeDirectory
<home_dir><url>afp://srv1.example.com/NetUsers/</url><path>administrator</path></home_dir>
in apple-user-homeurl
They are accepted

I have been fighting this problem for some time now, and it always seems to be specific users from specific PC's, and I can never personally reproduce the problem, but just see the results of it's occurance (though I have taken some interesting core files that seem to point to a Perl related issue). However, as I am also using Dovecot for pop/imap, I changed the access to using localhost imap, and the problem seems to have not returned for these users. rf On Fri, 6 Oct 2006, Jamie Cameron wrote: > On 6/Oct/2006 21:25 Jesse C. Is ${USER} a substitution done by the LDAP server, or by Webmin? Normally when you
specific an extra LDAP attribute like ${SOMETHING}, it will be replaced when the user
is saved with some attribute of the new user..
What did you mean by 'escape the auto extries' exactly?

I'm having an issue auto entering attributes in LDAP Useradmin when
creating new users - these auto entries simply aren't created though the
objectclass 'apple-user' is added and other samba attributes get
automatically entered. Also, if I manually add these entries below
(longhand - no ${USER} ), the entries are created.
1 - apple-user-homeDirectory, values typically look like
/Network/Servers/srv1.example.com/NetUsers/administrator
so my auto enter looks like
apple-user-homeDirectory /Network/Servers/srv1.example.com/NetUsers/${USER}
2 - apple-user-homeurl, values typically look like
<home_dir><url>afp://srv1.example.com/NetUsers/</url><path>administrator</path></home_dir>
(actually, it appears that these values are Base64 encoded when saved in
DSA)
so my auto enter looks like
<home_dir><url>afp://srv1.example.com/NetUsers/</url><path>${USER}</path></home_dir>
so it leaves me wondering if I somehow need to escape these auto entries
so they process properly in your perl scripts.
Suggestions?

Currently I'm using Sendmail with the mbox format. What you say does make sense though. Towards the end of the year I did notice our email traffic increasing so it would be only reasonable that the old way of doing things could cause us issues with incoming mail on the rise. Doing a quick search on google I noticed that doing Maildir shouldn't be a huge problem with some minor mods to promailrc. However what I don't understand is does that mean new mail goes into /var/spool/mail/username/<messages here> or would it be ~username/mail/inbox/<messages here>? Lastly, as far as the conversion is usermin cabable of reading two different formats at a time? I ask because I wonder can I just convert say all the inboxs first, wait to see what it does, and then convert all of their personal folders. Or do I need to do both sides of the puzzle at the same time? We currently are using Dovecot for the Pop3 / Imap side of things and it appears to be really easy to convert to the different setting. Any suggestions would be greatly > appriciated as always... What format are your mailboxes in? If they are in mbox format (one file per user), when Usermin deletes email it will re-write out the entire mail file with the removed emails taken out. As you might expect, this could cause substantial disk IO on large mail files.. The solution I used was to switch to Maildir format, in which each email is stored in a separate file. Deleting from this format is much quicker.. - Jamie |

Hello once again everyone. Since the new school year started we have been noticing increasingly high I/O usage on our servers. When I run the top command quite often you will see the WA status swing from really low up into the 70-80 even 90% range for up to a min and then drop again. I spend a little time trying to track down the problem and have noticed the following: When I/O is really high I always see the following line in "ps aux | grep D": 1229 14619 0.8 0.2 37272 16520 ? D 14:43 0:00 /usr/local/usermin-1.230/mailbox/delete_mail.cgi (Note: User ID is normally not the same one when polled) Sometimes I also see the index.cgi file too, but no where near as much as the above. A coworker in our department had made mention that maybe whats happening has something do with the process that usermin uses to remove mail from a mailbox when its deleted. Something about compacting the box during the delete instead of doing it like Thunderbird and waiting to compact until space can be saved. I guess case being all the reading and rewriting required to removed the dead message from the box. I don't recall having this problem that bad last year. On occassion when almost everyone was logged in things would get a little screwy, but not like this. General information about our config: Server: Processors: Dual Opteron 242's Ram: 6Gig ECC DDR HDs: 1.2 TB 3ware Raid Array OS: Slamd 64 10.2b (Slackware more or less) Kernel: 2.6.18 Usermin Version: 1.230 (This was happening in the last version too however. I just upgraded two days ago to see if the problem went away) Unfortunately dealing with I/O problems isn't my speciality so I could be barking up the wrong tree here. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated as always... -Jesse Gateway School District Monroeville, PA |

What I plan to do in the next release is add access control to the Spam Control page, which can also be used to setup relaying.. - Jamie |
