Jamie, I just built a new server and was wondering if I can use the old /etc/webmin and /etc/usermin directories and then install a new version of it with the rpms? A lot of ACL and user logins in there so was wanting to do this the best way and keep all that info. Is this doable? Thanks! -- -Doc Lincoln, NE. http://www.genealogyforyou.com/ http://www.cairnproductions.com/ |

You can only allow access to the home dir, and to other specific directories. - Jamie |

How do I tell Usermin to allow the file manager to only access $HOME/public_html? I've tried "public_html", "/public_html", "$HOME/public_html", but none of these seem to work. The user's physical path is /home/html/domain.com, and in there, there are a number of directories. I want to make sure the user doesn't remove/see things like log files and other things. So the directory of interest is public_html, which is in /home/html/public_html -joho |

Virtualmin always runs awstats on both the new and rotated versions of the log files, so that any records that were rotated since the last run will still be processed.. - Jamie |

Being a bit finicky about the layout/look of things, I cannot seem to get Usermin to display things exactly as I want with the Simple Blue Theme. I have "Web Control Panel" set as the custom host .. and now I see " on Web Control Panel ()" in the browser title when the user has not logged on. This is with "Display login and hostname" set to "Instead of browser title". If there is no username/active session, the " on " should not be included, nor should "()", which I don't know what it is. Once I login, I get "<username> on Web Control Panel ()".. which is a step better. This option, "Show version, hostname and OS on main menu", I would like to have one that doesn't include version or OS.. just the hostname :-) Also, how do I activate the feedback when using the SBT? I see it when enabling other themes, but for a simple Usermin set-up, the SBT is still nice and simple.. -joho |

But how do I automatically sync log rotation and the generation of awstats? If log rotation is to be used, awstats need to work on a rotated log. And what happens if it misses its run (for some reason) and then I've got two sets of log rotations to parse for statistics? For basic web sites, I'd like to just generate the statistics and be done with the log file. -joho |

Usually the truncation of log files in done on a Virtualmin system by logrotate. Any domain for which Apache is enabled should have an entry in /etc/logrotate.conf or /etc/logrotate.d/ to rotate it's log files. That way AWstats doesn't have to worry about it .. - Jamie |

Found it.. under server templates. The selection "pop-up" did not, however, work. But entering "nobody" manually worked. Final remaining problem for me: the logs directory needs different handling, or rather the log files. I set AWSTATS to truncate/purge the log files after successful parse/update. I've told WM/VM to write the log files via a program to avoid problem with missing directory. But although the log file directory has proper permissions, the log files themselves are -rw-r--r and root.root, which means that the "wwwuser" (nobody, in my case) cannot purge/write to them, and nor can awstats. Ideas? -joho |

When creating a new virtual site, I've got most things licked, including integration with AWSTATS and an automated file protection set-up for the statistics. But one thing escapes me: where do I tell WM/VM which user it should add to the newly created domain group? Right now, it insists on adding the user "wwwrun" to by "foo.domain.com" group. But we never use RPM-installs for any server software we run, so we compile Apache from source, and have used another user/group .. I tried looking in the Apache module config page, but couldn't find it there, nor could I find it in VirtualMin's module config. -joho |

That script is actually calling the Webmin API mostly, so there should be no difference between what it does and what Webmin does. What error message are you getting from dovecot or in /var/log/secure or /var/log/messages when users try to check email? SElinux should log something saying what capabilities / permissions were violated.. - Jamie |

Hi Jamie,
Some time ago you kindly helped me to put together a script to migrate
users from one Unix box to another, where each box used a different OS.
Basically, the script reads the password file on the source box, creates
the user on the destination box (using the encrypted password) and copies
all the user files (including mailboxes).
That script worked fine and all users were able to collect mail from the
new server using Dovecot with no problems. We are now adding users to the
new box using the Webmin adduser interface. However, Dovecot is having
problems reading from these mailboxes because of SeLinux restrictions.
My question is: What is the difference between the way the script creates
the user accounts and the way the Adduser interface creates the accounts
that causes Dovecot to have problems in one case but not the other.
A copy of the script is shown below (sorry, my Perl is not the best, but
it works):
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
#!/usr/bin/perl
# migrate-users.pl
# Copy user account
$no_acl_check++;
$ENV{'WEBMIN_CONFIG'} ||= "/etc/webmin";
$ENV{'WEBMIN_VAR'} ||= "/var/webmin";
if ($0 =~ /^(.*\/)[^\/]+$/) {
chdir($1);
}
chop($pwd = `pwd`);
$0 = "$pwd/migrate-users.pl";
require './web-lib.pl';
&init_config();
$< == 0 || die "migrate-users.pl must be run as root";
&foreign_require("useradmin", "user-lib.pl");
&useradmin::making_changes();
$passwordfile = "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX";
open (MASTERPASS, "$passwordfile") || die "cant open password file";
USERNAME:
while ($line = <MASTERPASS>)
{
&useradmin::build_user_used(\%used);
# Parse user and create object
chop ($line);
($s1_user, $s1_encpass, $s1_gid, $s1_uid,
$s1_tbd_1, $s1_tbd_2, $s1_tbd_3, $s1_real, $s1_home, $s1_shell) = split (/:/, $line);
print "\n\n>>>> Create user: $s1_user? (y or n): ";
$a = <STDIN>;
if ($a eq "n\n") {next USERNAME;}
$user->{'user'} = $s1_user;
$user->{'uid'} = 550;
while($used{$user->{'uid'}})
{
$user->{'uid'}++;
}
$user->{'home'} = "/home/$s1_user";
$user->{'shell'} = "/bin/false";
$user->{'pass'} = $s1_encpass;
$user->{'gid'} = 100;
$user->{'real'} = $s1_real;
&useradmin::create_user($user);
&useradmin::create_home_directory(\%user, $user->{'home'});
&useradmin::set_ownership_permissions($user->{'uid'}, $user->{'gid'}, undef, $user->{'home'});
$uf = "/etc/skel.user";
$shell = $user->{'shell'}; $shell =~ s/^(.*)\///g;
$uf =~ s/\$group/$user->{'gid'}/g;
$uf =~ s/\$gid/$user->{'gid'}/g;
$uf =~ s/\$shell/$shell/g;
&useradmin::copy_skel_files($uf, $user->{'home'}, $user->{'uid'}, $user->{'gid'});
# copy home files
system ("rcp -rp source_server:$s1_home/* $user->{'home'}");
system ("chown -R $user->{'uid'}.$user->{'gid'} $user->{'home'}");
# copy mail
system ("rcp -rp source_server:/var/mail/$user->{'user'} /var/spool/mail");
system ("chown $user->{'uid'}.mail /var/spool/mail/$user->{'user'}");
&useradmin::set_ownership_permissions($user->{'uid'}, $user->{'gid'}, undef, $user->{'home'});
print "Created user: $s1_user\n";
}
}
&useradmin::made_changes();

Its "Yes, and use the default reporting mode"
Well yesterday night I got this email form webmin:
"Service monitor : Samba Servers down on servername" !!!
So it succeed in report the problem when run at the schedule time.
But when I try manually to make it send me report it doesn't.

Interesting ..
Do you have any CGI-related environment variables set at the command like
SCRIPT_NAME or SERVER_ROOT ? These may be confusing Webmin scripts..

Hi Jamie To expand a bit more on this problem. I have 1 master and 3 slaves. The 2 slaves that are giving me problems are debian linux. The 3rd slave which I do not have the problem on is FreeBSD 6.1. All slav= es have a root login and password, besides the 3rd slave where I do not use = the user root. I have now edited the 2 linux slaves to say "make fast rpc calls", I will= add some bogus domains at some point and let you know how it goes. Thanks alot. There isn't any way to setup the ACL like this currently, sorry. What the module needs is a read-only mode, but that hasn't yet been implemented. - Jamie |
