My 4th grade daughter's teacher has the class working on a project using Tux Paint. We downloaded it today, but, for the life of us, have been unable to get it to save my daughter's project. When we hit "save," I see what looks like an error message underneath the color palette stating "Couldn't open data/starters/worldmap_japan-back.png." Just to walk through the problem, when we hit "Save" (the sixth icon down on the right underneath the "Tools" double column on the far left), we then see a message box that says "Replace the picture with your changes? Yes, replace the old one! No, save a new file!" Regardless of the selection we make, we see the error message noted above. And, after making the selection, we see no saved file anywhere to open. Also, the Tools double column on the left does not list any "cache" or such place to even retrieve a saved file. The bottom two tools are "Print" and "Quit." What are we doing wrong here? She needs to get something saved to a thumb drive by tomorrow night (it is now Sunday, January 24), and we have been unable to get this done. Thanks. |

Is there a way to do that? If you use the Tux Paint Config. tool, you can reconfigure Tux Paint to save in a different location. Use the "Use Alternative Save Directory" option under the "Saving" tab. Hope that helps! Let us know! -bill! |

At the moment, Tux Paint has no facility to talk to a scanner (or webcam), though obviously these would be a great feature to have. :) However, you can use an external scanning or graphics program to get the images, and then import them into Tux Paint. The documentation talks about this, but to put things simply, it's easiest if you: (1) Convert the picture to a PNG format file (you might want to resize it a bit) (2) Place the file in the folder where Tux Paint loads and saves files (see: http://www.tuxpaint.org/gallery/submit/ ) This is assuming you simply want to load the picture in, draw on it, and then save it back out (overwriting the original). If you wish to use the scan as a 'Starter' (e.g., a coloring-book style picture that's accessible from the "New" dialog screen in Tux Paint, below the solid color options), then you'd put it in a different folder. The _typical_ locations (may vary depending on your exact OS and how and where you installed Tux Paint): * Windows: C:\Program Files\TuxPaint\data\ * Mac OS X: /Library/Application Support/TuxPaint/ * Linux: /usr/share/tuxpaint/ For much more, see the "Extending Tux Paint" doc that comes with Tux Paint (also found online: http://www.tuxpaint.org/docs/html/EXTENDING.html ) Good luck, and let us know if you have problems or other questions! -- -bill! I am using Tux Paint but would like to save it to our 'public' drive so that it will be saved where I can get it from my office computer and print it off. I know there is an alternate drive, but it doesn't indicate which folder it would go in. Is there a way to do that? For a long time, I've wished there were something more kid-friendly than ucblogo or kturtle in Debian that younger kids might use to do Logo or Logo-like activities. I like the easy keyboard entry, and the dream metaphor is a great idea. :) Ben |

When I was a kid, I used Logo a bit (just the turtle graphics part) in a few classes in elementary school -- this was on green-screen Apple IIs. At home, I had an Atari 8-bit computer (256 glorious colors) and ended up with a cartridge called "Delta Drawing" by Spinnaker (an educational software company that, if I read correctly, got absorbed by what became The Learning Company.) Delta Drawing was a lot different from Logo. It was far simpler (not that I have any experience with Logo outside of the turtle graphics), and more immediate. It didn't use a split-screen with commands at the bottom, and graphics at the top. You were simply faced with a "^"-shaped cursor (turtle) in the center of the screen, and you issued single-keystroke commands which it executed immediately. [D] - draw a line [Shift] + [D] - draw a small line [Ctrl] + [D] - draw a single pixel [R] - rotate right (clockwise) (30 degrees, I believe) [Shift] + [R] - rotate right a little less (15 degrees?) [Ctrl] + [R] - rotate right 1 degree You could also ask it to repeat, e.g. to rotate 90 degrees you'd type [3] [R] (or alternatively, I guess, [9] [0] [Ctrl]+[R]). If you hit [Backspace], the commands you issued would be undone, one by one. You could go in and view your program (all commands were just those single letters). Well, I decided to do something like this in SDL. I've implemented subroutines in a cute (I think!) way. The turtle 'dreams' of what it will do, in a little subwindow. (Imagine it with fluffly clouds :) ) See a video of it here on YouTube. I've annotated it, and put a bit of detail into the description. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuLVAQNLXds Gotta run. We have recently downloaded Tux Paint to our lab computers. Our students love it! We are having a problem with printing projects. When it comes time to print there are no printer options given and it automatically prints to our black and white printer and not our color one. We are running Version 9.20 Tux on Mac OS 10.5.5. Hi, At my kid's school we wanted a way to use tuxpaint in a collaborative environment. I don't know what other options are out there, but I've put together a couple of scripts. What do you mean by "says it's infected"? Is it just complaining because alioth uses self-signed certificates, or is there an actual malware scan picking something up? Also, where are you getting TuxType from? Our official site is http://tux4kids.alioth.debian.org. I also maintain the tuxtype packages available at http://sourceforge.net. I can voudh that these packages are clean. They aren't even built on a Windows machine - I'm pretty sure my Debian computer isn't harboring any Windows malware. Out of curiosity, I have done searches for "tuxmath" and "tuxtype" on Google and found hits from some dodge-looking download sites. I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere in the world there are shady characters bundling malware into packages with our name on them. But if you get tuxtype from our official site, you have nothing to worry about. Please let me know more about the worrysome message you are getting. Sincerely, David Bruce |
