Wow! BSD! My favourite!!! I have been waiting for somebody to take the initiative to create a BSD for the desktop for a long time... But finally the wait seems to be over. :) Although I have to say FreeBSD 6.0 does a superb job at that already. OpenBSD 3.8 also worked quite nicely, although the fact that FreeBSD has many more ports as well as the fact that it's more polished for the desktop made that the better choice. The larger user base and thorough documentation is also an advantage. OpenBSD 3.8 came out tops on the server though in my lab. I would definitely have been interested to become a translator, although I fear I have a total lack of time at the moment which is so severe that I just can't. I really hope somebody with some more time than me will take the initiative. :) Reasons why BSD is so cool: - It's super-efficient - It's super-secure - It's super-stable Yes, we all know how cool Linux is but on all three of these BSD far outperforms Linux to such an extent where Linux has to go and sulk in the corner. So now you know how cool BSD is. :) The only thing that BSD still lacks is compatibility and some general polish in comparison to a fairly well-polished Linux distro like Ubuntu. Maybe a better package manager would also be handy than PKG. But I hope PC-BSD will change all that. Ok, so what I'm trying to say is that this is a _very_ good project to get involved with. As for me, I'm blogging about it. :) -- Charl van Niekerk http://charlvn.za.net |
