Dear listmembers,
in general it is desireable to use a higher value for samples as the default,
I increased to 500 and am quite happy with the result - for "normal" smooth
curves.
However, a problem occurs if one has dashed curves in mind. Is there a way to
plot a function with a specific value for "set samples" for one of several
plots in order to realize a good spacing for the "dots" and / or the "dashes"
whereas the number of samples for smooth curves stay high?

The "columns" in binary mode are unconnected with any reality that my poor brain can comprehend. I am surprised that the above command produces anything useful. I would have expected it to produce a uniform grid (column 1 = x coord; column 2 = y coord) at z=0. That's what `help binary` describes, anyhow. Ethan |

Not in a single plot type, but you could split the error bars out
into a second plot element. Assuming a file containing
x y meanz lowz highz
splot 'data' using 1:2:3 with points, \
'' using 1:2:4:(0):(0):($5-$4) with vectors nohead lt -1

"dl 0.1" means "dashes and dash separation are only 1/10 the normal size".
That's probably not what you want.

Some 'with' modifiers include implicit dimensions in ASCII mode, others don't. For example: plot '-' using 1 with lines works, while plot '-' using 1:2 with yerrorbars does not. I think this is a bug, since the equivalent in binary mode: plot '-' binary array=(5) format="%double%double" using 1:2 with yerrorbars works fine. |

That part you can do by adding a dummy plot clause that will plot
nothing but will add the line samples and a blank title.
For this part no awk script is necessary.
plot '-' u 1:2:3 w imp lc var notitle, \
for [i=1:4] NaN lc i title " "

There is no way to do that inside gnuplot.
You can take key titles from a columnheader, but not from
within a line of data. It would make no sense, as a plot
can have only one title - not a new title for every line.
How about a parallel file that just contains the text labels
all on one line?
red green blue cyan yellow magenta
There are several ways you could read this into gnuplot
and use the separate column text as plot titles.

Hmmm, it seems that the INT signal doesn't make gnuplot do what I want it to do for the pipe case. In particular, if I'm sending binary data over a pipe and issue an INT, it doesn't make gnuplot start accepting new commands over the pipe. As near as I can tell, gnuplot continues to read from the pipe regardless. So INTing seems to work fine over a tty but not over a pipe control link. Is there any way to interrupt gnuplot and either ask for out-of-band status or tell it to revert to a prompt, when it's expecting binary data input from stdin? I currently manage PDL::Graphics::Gnuplot, a Perl front-end for gnuplot plotting. The module provides a Perl API that generates Gnuplot commands and ships data over a pipe to a gnuplot process. A major compatibility and reliability issue that we have is that, in binary mode (which we use for speed) gnuplot locks up until its full complement of data has been read. This causes several problems: - There's no documented way (that I've found) for our perl process to know in advance if gnuplot is working or locked-up (e.g. sometimes the x11 terminal can take a long time to render a plot if the DISPLAY is remote) - Slow rendering jobs can be interrupted by the user, and there's no documented way (that I've found) to let gnuplot know to stop what it's doing and give a prompt back. That means we have to drop-kick the gnuplot process and restart it (which loses state and also generates a new display window on interactive terminals) - Some platforms munge pipe contents, and there's no way to diagnose that problem. The only workaround I can see would be to generate temporary files and ask gnuplot to read those - but that incurs more overhead since we are then using the file system instead of direct IPC. Dear all, I am having trouble while plotting some heatmaps with the following commands: "set view map splot 'myfile' matrix with image" Where myfile is an ASCII file containing N lines and each lines containing K floating point values. It worked really well until I have the following error: "warning: Number of pixels cannot be factored into integers matching grid. N = 500500 K = 2000" I understand the error, Gnuplot told me that it cannot read "myfile" as a 500500*2000 grid. The problem is that "myfile" is actually 500500*500 grid. (really I check). It seems to me that gnuplot is having trouble while determining K. I don't know if it comes from the fact that I am using floating point values (As I said it worked well before)? I don't know if I can set these two values N and K by myself ? Any idea? SVG necessarilly accepts UTF-8 encoding, so just give it the
characters directly:
set ylabel " Δ ^‡"
(tested here using gnuplot 4.6.1's svg terminal)

Hi all, as far as I have understood the Postscript Terminal requires plot size to be defined in the "set term " command. But then how can I decide how large the canvas is going to be? I mean, I want a plot to be square 5 inches x5 inches FIXED. Then I want a larger canvas to put plot title and key without affecting the graph size. I think you'll have to put the superscript in {} for that to work.
set ylabel ' Δ E^{‡}'
gnuplot's internal engine doesn't know about &#x syntax, so it has no
way of knowing that it's not just the & you wanted in superscript.
Whether or not that will help with smuggling the '&' through, I'm not sure.

Ok. I spent yesterday afternoon figuring it out, and it's not a perfect solution, but a workable one. I am using gnuplot to plot charts of amperage/power data. The logger generates a database entry (SQLite) every 60 seconds or so, so plotting a monthly line chart is what I'm going for, but plotting xticlabels was very messy, because it would place a label every minute for an entire month's worth of data. The basic solution was to generate a plot using precise timestamps and with a yrange writeback set timefmt "%m/%d/%Y %H:%M:%S" set yrange [*:*] writeback set output "unknown" - this is a fix for an issue I found with PNG output plot sqlite command with select statement for all timestamps and data with lines then set yrange restore set terminal png size 950,480 set output "outfile.png" replot sqlite command select distinct days that logging occurs with simply a date as a timestamp and a zero value as column 2, 1:2:xtics(1) Issues: this works for me because amperage is usually positive and the zero values generated in the replot are ignored by using the yrange restore. If I were using data that had negative values, this would be an issue, because it would leave marks on the x Axis line. I hope I've helped you and have given you some ideas for fixing your problem. I could do something similar to what I wanted by this: f(x) = (x >= 0 ? log10(x) : log10(1/abs(x))); then combine the following two plots (in linear scale) using multiplot ... set yrange [0:4] plot file using 1:(f($2)) set yrange [-4:0] plot file using 1:(f($2)) The use of multiplot is to place two plots above and below the zero line. technical analysis indicators. One way I have seen that done is to
pick a pair arbitrary cutoff points near zero. You could try Googling
for John McGinley. He wrote on the subject back in the 1980s. His
solution was to plot a small slice of the chart just above and below
zero with a linear scale. I add a hatch to the region to make the
discontinuity clear. I haven't tried this in gnuplot, but Ethan
Merritt demoed some tricks using the ternary operator that should make
it doable.
