there is a solution :-)
Not very elegant but the result is important...
Basically, you are creating a few dummy plots thereby extracting the
columnheaders into string variables.
Then you create your desired plot using those variables.

As I understand and have read several times, gnuplot is not made for that. However, I'd also love to have this feature. You can try the following: Define variables for row and column c=2 # column number r=3 # row number-1 a=0 # will later contain your value plot 'Data.dat' u 1:(a=column(c),1/0) every 1:1:r:0:r:0 notitle You will get a warning and no plot. However, if you type show var the variable a contains the desired value. Maybe there is or will be a more elegant way to extract values of "cells". Good luck, Theo. |

In excel absolute cell reference means you can refer to any desired cell. For example, to refer to cell A1, one can use $a$1. Is there any equivalent way to do the same in gnuplot? So, if there is an empty line in your data it starts a new block.

However, you might have to skip the automatic columnheader() and set the title manually. I am not sure, whether I understand your problem. Before the first plot command you apply unset key If you want a key in the second plot you should apply set key before the second plot command. If I plot e.g. sin(x) and cos(x) I get the keys as expected. How does your data look like? Is it matrix data? Do you have a reduced data example? Theo. |

Hi all,
this is my second post today - you can see I'm still starting off with
gnuplot :P
I have a large data-file, which contains my data, each point is a line
of the format (r z B_r B_z B_phi)
So, if I want to plot the values of B_z at a fixed r, I do something like
plot 'PG.dat' using 2:( $1 == 0 ? $4 : 1/0 ) title 'B(z,r=0)'
which works nice. (I tried the index option, but I couldn't get it to work).
If I want a smooth line instead of points, I have to append 'smooth
unique', as far as I understand. With the method I used to indentify my
subset of points, this method doesent work (for splines it should be at
last 3 points, 'unique' doesn't plot anything (except for the key; there
a line is visible)).
Is there a way to get smooth lines? Or am I doing things wrong?

Hi all,
I am trying to plot several graphs from the same data-file, which
contains data on a magnetic field. In the end I want a plot, where the
top part has the same settings as the lower one, except that the y-scale
is different.
To this end, I use a multiplot and align the two plots by
set [t|b]margin at screen y
which works nicely. The problem is the key - I only want one, if
possible spanning the whole graph on the right side. At this point, I
can not even make the key disappear for one graph (I have already tried
"set key off", "unset key", "notitle")
I used the 'with image' keyword, but I think this is the part that
messes up the above.
This is the code I have so far:

actually, if your x-axis is changing, the following would be better. set arrow 1 from graph 0,first 0 to graph 1,first 0 nohead It draws a horizontal line from the left to the right side of the graph at position y=0 of the first (x1) axis. |

This is ok however the bars look to be float in the space because the the horizontal line goes to bottom because of the xtics strings. Which option can draw a horizontal line at y=0 in addition to the bottom line? Regards, Mahmood |

OK I found that it will be easier to create some data files, instead of integrating all data in one file and doing complex string formatting, and invoke them with plot command. Hi there, if I want to create compact PNG plots I have the choice between term png term pngcairo where the pngcairo results usually look better. png is saved either as 8 bit or 24 bit (truecolor) image pngcairo seems to be always saved as 24 bit image independent whether it's mono or color. If I take a pngcairo 24 bit color image and reduce the colors with an external image processing program to 8 bit or even 4 bit I save a quite some disc space (especially, if I have a lot of plots). And mostly, 256 or even 16 colors are enough. Is there a way to directly tell gnuplot to save 8 bit or 4 bit pngcairo images? Thanks, Theo. |
