[Gnuplot-info] How do you plot to a large paper size (i.e. archE) and create postscript output

I am successfully using gnuplot to plot information and create a 
postscript output file.  I then run the postscript output through 
GhostScript and create a PDF.  Works beautifully!  The plot is sized 
perfectly for letter sized (8.5 x 11) paper.

However, I have a large amount of data in the plot.  Therefore, I would 
like to "stretch" the plot to show more points (more detail).  I am 
thinking I could plot to a larger paper size.  For example, archE (36" x 
48") paper.  When I set GhostScript to use a paper size of archE, I get a 
tiny plot in the upper left corner of a gigantic page.  I have not found a 
way to have gnuplot create postscript output for a larger paper size.  In 
gnuplot, I have tried using "set size 4.23,4.36" to attempt to increase 
the x and y axis ratios.  Interestingly, the x axis does stretch to fill 
the paper, but the plot is placed vertically in the same position and the 
y axis goes up and off the top of the page.  Moreover, I get the same 
number of x ticks; they just happen to be spread out further.

Is there a way to tell gnuplot to create a plot destined for a postscript 
output file where the plot size is larger then the default 10 inches wide 
and 7 inches high?  The size I am shooting for is approximately 47 inches 
wide and 34.5 inches high.

There's nothing much to it.  Go to the download section of 
gnuplot.sf.net, download the win32 .zip file, unpack it in some place 
you like, create a shortcut to your desktop if you like, and run it.

And don't forget to READ all files called README or the likes.

and both X11 and junk.ps look fine - I can send junk.ps to you if you're=20
interested (didn't want to make so much noise on the list). So, there must =
be=20
something wrong with your build. I cannot remember seing issues with the=20
postscript-terminal on 4.0 but switched to 4.1 due to several very=20
interesting new features.

What exactly ceased?  How does it fail?

What were the gnuplot version before and after the upgrade?

We can't really help you much with details of behaviour of Linux 
distributor's binaries.  If those give you problems, you really should
either address them to the distributor, or at least cross-check them
against our original, unmodified release versions.

The screen plot is always good, but the junk.ps file has become true junk...

I've tried lots of tweaks like using the "eps" option, but to no avail...

Dear listmembers,
about a half a year ago I reported a bug regarding titlepage.tex in the doc=
s=20
directory. The bug has not been fixed in the meantime so I supply it again,=
=20
maybe it has gone lost.

tetex 3.0 fails to build the ps documentation (make ps) in the docs directo=
ry=20
because the target gnuplot.dvi in the Makefile is not built as "dvi" but as=
=20
"pdf". Consequently dvitops fails because there is no dvi file being=20
generated. The same is true for gpcard due to the same problem.

The reason for this is the insufficient parsing of \pdfoutput in=20
titlepage.tex. \pdfoutput is *always* defined in modern tex - distributions=
,=20
and somewhere in hyperref this leads to the change in the output to pdf.
Please find the patch against current CVS attached to this email.
It does not conflict with older tex distributions.

gnuplot doesn't do x or y grid lines on the x-z or y-z planes.  Only z lines 
are drawn (by 'set grid ztics').

To improve the clearity of the plots I would like to add grids. Not only =

Hello,

I am having trouble getting gnuplot started on my mac (unix on OS X).  I 
downloaded and ran the installer for gnuplot 4.0.0.  I also have X11 and 
Aquaterm installed.  Everything seems to have installed fine.  I can see gnuplot 
in the directory /usr/local/bin.  When I start X11 and type gnuplot, it responds 
'command not found'.  My colleague installed the same downloads on his 
computer with no trouble.  I am not well versed in unix, so explicit instructions 
would be great.  I appreciate any help you can offer.

[Gnuplot-info] 3D curve with color gradience

Hi, 

This is a good one! Not too sure it can be done. As I
understand it the colors are fairly limited in gnuplot
- and you'd have to draw each section of the curve
separately.

If I was going to do this - using gnuplot (there may
be better packages out there for this problem) - I
would have to mess around with the postscript file.
First of all I would have a limited number of
'segments' for my curve. I would draw each of these in
a different colour (theres only ten colours in ps
term!). Then I would look at the post script file in a
text editor and find the parts with \LT and then a
number. These are the colours and you can play around
with the RGB of them. 

It'd be a pain in the backside if you had to do it
several times though, but as long as you can chop your
curve into a limited number of segmentsit should work.
 I don't know if anyone else can think of a better way
to do it?

There is: the 'palette' option to the splot command, as documented in 
'help pm3d' and 'help with' and 'help splot with'.

[Gnuplot-info] Time data - subsecond, binary

I'm using the latest gnuplot CVS. I'd like to plot time data with 
subsecond precision from a binary file. Is this possible?

I've been able to pass in a text file with subsecond time since the 
epoch in this kludgey way:

My Python generator uses something like this to make the datafile:

     now = time.time() # seconds since epoch
     subsec, sec = math.modf(now) # split fractional and whole parts
     datafile.write("%d %g %g\n" % (sec, subsec, data))

and feeds something like this to gnuplot's stdin:

     set xdata time
     set timefmt "%s"
     plot "datafile" using (timecolumn(1)+$2):3

since apparently there are no subsecond formats available, and I can't 
see a way to directly feed gnuplot its internal format in column 1. It 
seems to expect a timefmt-formatted value there once I set "xdata time".

Strangely, I couldn't get the same commands to work with datafiles like 
this:

     datafile.write("0 %g %g\n" % (now, data))

...which I'd think would be equivalent. The output is all...weird. Data 
points only come in bursts every couple hours or so.

In any case, what I'd really like to do is to just go to a binary format 
to save a few CPU cycles. Something like this would be ideal:

     datafile.write(struct.struct('d d', now, data))

I.e., simply a double with the entire time followed by a double with my 
y axis data.

but I could do the second/subsecond thing if necessary, maybe:

     datafile.write(struct.struct('I d d', sec, subsec, data))

(unsigned int of whole seconds, double of fractional seconds, double data)

How would I parse this in gnuplot? I've tried things various commands:

     plot "datafile" binary format="%float%float" using 1:2
     plot "datafile" binary format="%float%float" using (timecolumn(1)):2
     plot "datafile" binary format="%int%float%float" using 
(timecolumn(1)+$2):2

but always get this:

          warning: Skipping data file with no valid points
          x range is invalid

In fact, I can't get time data to plot from a binary even without the 
subsecond precision. Is it even possible?

A .bat file is only marginally helpful with this.  What you mostly need 
is a plot script file containing the line 'set terminal latex'.  Then 
you can run wgnuplot through whichever means you like, including a batch 
file, like this:

	wgnuplot /noend set_to_latex.gpl

A caveat, though: 'latex' is almost certainly not the optimal choice of 
terminal, nor is it particularly likely that pre-setting wgnuplot to 
some terminal driver is really helpful.  But if you insist, you may want 
to check out the environment variables, especially GNUPLOT, and the 
GNUPLOT.INI file it points to.

You forgot to tell, but for reference: this is obviously about the 
native MS Windows version of gnuplot, a.k.a. 'wgnuplot'.

Hit the 'm' key while the graph window has the focus, or 'set mouse off' 
in the text window before you make the plot.  For more about this, see 
'help mouse'.
