[Gnuplot-info] question:colors as variables

Dear Reseachers
  Although this might be easy question, it is quite difficult for me.
  I would like to dot or line output drawing changing colours. The color 
information is on the fourth column (1st, 2nd and 3rd columns are x, y and 
z).
I would like to adopts one specific color according to fourth column value.
  Would you give me comments or example programs to do this ?

This becoming a FAQ.  You don't have the necessary packages installed
for compiling programs running under X11.  Without those, the x11
driver can't be built.  Look for a package called x-devel or similar.

[Gnuplot-info] problem with displaying graph with gnuplot

Hello,

I have installed gnuplot 4.0 patchlevel 0 and my problem is that the 
terminal type is set by default to "Unknown" while the terminal type list 
doesn't include "x11".
I am very new to unix and don't know what to do.
I am using KDE from mandriva 10.1 .
Could you help me ?

For many of my plots, I have 20 different lines to plot.  I've got a
standard for many aspects of these plots including a standard title for
each line/dataset, line color and line width defined.  Rather than having 
to do:

plot 
'x' title "X-data" with lines title 'Xtitle' lt rgb 'purple' lw 3,
'y' title "Y-data" with lines title 'Ytitle' lt rgb 'sea-green' lw 2,

etc

I'd like to do something like:

plot 'x' XDISPLAY, 'y' YDISPLAY

where XDISPLAY would be replaced with "with lines title 'Xtitle' lt 
rgb 'purple' lw 3".  Likewise for YDISPLAY, etc.

I'm running 4.1 so I have the string functionality but when I try the
above, I get:

gnuplot> plot x XDISPLAY
                ^
         ';' expected

The plot comes up but its as if gnuplot ignores the contents of XDISPLAY.
Is doing the above possible with the string mechanism?  

Is there another/better way to do this?

Suggestions on other interesting features that the generic gnuplot user overlooks

None that I know of, for none of the at least half a dozen different 
thinigs that get called 'line' in gnuplot.

You usually shouldn't have to do anything in particular to make the
typical GUI driver of your platform the start-up choice.  gnuplot
already does that by itself.  If the start-up terminal is 'unknown',
that probably means your build of gnuplot didn't actually include the
aquaterm driver.  The telltale symptom is that 'set term aquaterm' will
respond with an error message, and that aquaterm is not in the list
printed by 'set term'.

There are some tutorials out there on the net, some linked from our

That's a lot less well-defined than you may think it is.  There are 
literally infinitely many surfaces that could be defined by those 
points.  Absent other information, the task of choosing among them is 
completely impossible for a computer program.

So if you want a surface, it's up to you to choose which one, and inform
gnuplot about that choice.  By far the best method would be to produce a 
gridded dataset instead of a cloud of unrelated point.  See 'help splot 
datafile' for what you have to do, and 'help glossary' to understand the 
terms used in there.

What does that mean.  What's distorted about them?  And how do you know 
that's only happening at the edges?

All I want to do is plot these points and link them to make a surface.

However when I use:

set dgrid3d 160,160

It distorts my graph at the edges.

When I use

contour

Gnuplot says:

Notice: cannot contour non grid data!

Somebody please help me

The easiest options is probably to generate ps files (since they offer the most 
options) and afterwards convert the ps to png with imagemagik or something else.

In that case I suspect you're stuck --- the PNG driver doesn't do dotted
lines.  It relies exclusively on colour do distinguish lines.

style' for how line drawing styles are generally controlled, and the 
help for your driver, and the 'test' page, to learn about the specifics.

That work flow is rather circumventional.  That could be a sizeable part 
of the problem.  The conversion to PDF and the PDF interpreter introduce 
additional variables that gnuplot has no control over at all.  You may 
want to check against direct output of gnuplot-generated PS to the 
plotter/printer.

PostScript is a vector-based file format --- you shouldn't really have 
to make a bigger image to get more resolution.  Just tell the printer
or some other intermediate processing tool to blow up the thing by 
whatever factor you need.

'set xtics' can almost certainly help you with that.

You're using all the way that there is, already.  Setting 'origin', too,
