Only with help from outside gnuplot. gnuplot isn't meant to be a data processing program. In the case at hand, you need external tools to count the number of entries in the file. In the simplest imaginageable case, this would do it: count=`wc -l data` # use external tool 'wc' to count items set boxwidth 1 plot 'data' using 1:(100.0/count) smooth frequency with boxes |

Hello, In Gnuplot it is simple to manipulate with columns, but with lines i have more fun:) I have data file n-th columns and z-th lines (1 block). Is it possible to write simple command line for ploting all columns but normed for example to y-th line (from every line take minus of selected line)? For example two columns and three lines in each. Plot two columns but from the first line take minus with the second then from the second with the second and from the third with the second line. Many thanks for help or comments Egidijus |

Hi, Its really very simple (although you might run out of colours if you have 'tens of files') You split it up just as someone mentioned, but like this: plot 'data.dat' u 1:(x<100?$2:1/0),/ '' u 1:(x>100&&x<200?$2:1/0),/ '' u 1:(x>200&&x<300?$2:1/0),/ '' u 1:(x>300&&x<400?$2:1/0),/ '' u 1:(x>400&&x<500?$2:1/0),/ '' u 1:(x>500&&x<600?$2:1/0) for example would allow you to plot the sections as different plots. You can specify colours using the with line (w l) option from plot (see help plot), but this is going to depend on which terminal your using. How about you split the curve up into section?
Try this:
f(x) = sin(x)
set xrange [0:pi]
plot x<=pi/4 ? f(x) : 1/0 with lines lt 0,\
x>pi/4 && x<=pi/2 ? f(x) : 1/0 with lines lt 1,\
x>pi/2 && x<=3*pi/4 ? f(x) : 1/0 with lines lt 2,\
x>3*pi/4 && x<=pi ? f(x) : 1/0 with lines lt 3
This should get you started.

That may very well be the wrong question. You should first ask yourself *if* you should do it this way. Such a plot would visually scream at the reader, but convey no useful information doing so. It would basically be an intentional obfuscation of the plot. If you really must, you'll have to cut your data into two separate files, one holding the 'greeen' parts, the other the 'red' parts (with blank records where the 'wrong' parts would have been, in each of them. Then plot both files using whatever linetype you need to get red and green on whatever terminal you're using. |

First of all, placing them via 'set xtics' would almost certainly be a better idea than doing that via 'set label'. Second, if you must use 'set label', you should use graph or screen coordinates, not data coordinates, in cases where you don't know the data scale. See 'help label' and 'help coordinate' for more details. |

Thanks, that helped me out a bunch. I absolutely misunderstood those directives. At least now I can get y=0 to show up consistently! The data I'm plotting can range from y=3 to as great as y=2000 so this is causing a lot of problems with the labels along the x axis as I have no way of scaling their position correctly in relation to whatever ymax is generated by autoscale. So sometimes the labels show up, sometimes they are too high (st rattling the y=0 line) and sometimes they are cut off along the bottom. I'm setting the labels like this: set label 1 "Wednesday 11" at 0.5,-.08 center the -.08 is obviously the problem, but if i never know what ymax is it's tough to compute what that value should be for a particular graph. Are there any other gnuplot directives that i could issue to automatically place the labels at the right y offset? Thanks for all your help. Eric |

Hi, I'm not too sure what you wanted. As I understand it autoscale is set on for all axis as default. So setting autscale ymax wouldn't do much. Type show autoscale to see whats going to and what is set. But if you just want autoscale on the ymax then you can type: unset autoscale set autoscale ymax Or if you want the ymax value to be tight to the maximum value of your data then you can try: set autoscale yfixmax or if you want your yaxis to go from 0 to whatever, then try set yrange[0:*] Not entirely sure I understood your problem, but I hope this helps. Hi,
I have been working with GNU plot and the autoscale function and have been
having some trouble. Using "set autoscale ymax" does not seem to yield the
result that I thought it would. Hopefully someone can shed some light on
this for me.

The labels for the x axis (1-7) do not show up, because the resulting graph
(see http://spot.colorado.edu/~schoelle/untitled.bmp) has it's y values
starting at 2 instead of 0.
I figured with "set autoscale ymax" GNUplot would only adjust the maximum
value on the y axis and leave the minimum values starting at 0.
I thought maybe I was thinking of this backwards and tried "set autoscale
ymin" - but no change resulted in the graph.
What the heck am I doing wrong???

Plotting that dataset using options lt -1 or maybe lt -1 lw 0.5 will work on most terminals in all versions of gnuplot. In the CVS version, you can specify the colour more directly. |

If you installed the cygwin binary package of gnuplot, please note that that's the X11 version of gnuplot. You'll have to have an X server (preferrably Cygwin's port) running to see the plot window. If you want native Windows output, install the win32 binary of gnuplot (a.ka. "wgnuplot") from gnuplot's own download sites, not the cygwin package. |

it runs OK but when I tried to obtain any graph this doesn=B4t appear, for

Hi I have 2 questions regarding histogram plotting in version 4.1. 1. How can I reduce the thickness of the line that surrounds a bar in the histogram? 2. In a rowstacked style of histogram, i have quite a few data elements whose percentages are represented as a single bar. A rowstacked style is supposed to represent each column of data using a different color but some of the colors get repeated for 2 data elements. Is there a way to ensure that I get unique colors for all the percentages/columns? Thanks Shehjar |

That complicates matters further. There are two completely separate
terminal drivers in 4.0 that both generate PNGs, and both come under the
name 'set term png'. You'll have to check which of them you got ('help
png' or 'show version long' tells). You may have to recompile your 4.0
binary to switch to the other one.
