It works just like column() (which you know best in its shorthand form, $1), but tries to figure out time/date data, too. |

I have a question, which if the answer is "you can't do that", might be a suggestion: Let say I have a data file with some time data: 2004 11 1 100.0 2005 1 15 90.2 2005 3 28 60.4 2006 4 15 23.8, etc I do: set xdata time set timefmt "%Y %m %d" p "data" us 1:4 Now I define a function: f(t) = a * exp( -(t - t0) / tc) I can fit with this function, and over plot the fit with: p "data" us 1:4, f(x) In the above, the function is called with the time in seconds. But now I wish I could plot the residuals. The thing I tried first: p "data" us 1:4, "" us 1:($4 - f($1)) This produces a plot, but f() is called with just the year - not the time is seconds. I wish there was some way to get the x time value. Is there already a way? - I was unable to puzzle one out... Two possible syntaxes that I've thought of: allow "$x" in a using expression to evaluate to the time (and $y if "set ydata time" is in effect") p "data" us 1:4,"" us 1:($4 - f($x)) of define a function, xtim (and ytim), which could be called with the data file line number if it needs to have an argument p "data" using 1:4,"" us 1:($4 - f(xtim($0))) Comments? Thanks, Andy S. |

This is straightforward, and following the example given by Ramzi > gnuplot>plot "file.txt" u 3:1 you can simply add more files by separating them with a comma, e.g. gnuplot>plot "file1.txt" u 3:1, "file2.txt" u 4:1 etc. A different colour / linestyle will be chosen automatically, if you want more control of this, see the link below. > 2. How can I export the graph once it is finished plotting the blue > points on top of the red points? Where can I export it to? How? You have to set the "terminal" to an output type first. For example, if you want an eps file named "MyGraph.eps" in color, with the example above, do something like gnuplot>set terminal postscript enhanced eps color gnuplot>set output "MyGraph.eps" gnuplot>plot "file1.txt" u 3:1, "file2.txt" u 4:1 Of course, there are many more options on how to do a plot, which output format to chose etc. I would suggest you read the following introduction to gnuplot: http://t16web.lanl.gov/Kawano/gnuplot/index-e.html Regards Till |

Thanks! That's great. I also was wondering if you could help me with 2 more questions: 1. if I want to plot another set of numbers (different file) with different colors, on top of my previous plotted points from the first file, how can I do this? 2. How can I export the graph once it is finished plotting the blue points on top of the red points? Where can I export it to? How? Thank you so much again, I really appreciate your quick response. Hi;
I am writting my thesis and got into the problem of having a
multiplot generated by gnuplot 4.0.0 using the term epslatex and
eventually included in latex document via \input{fig} where fig.tex,
and fig.eps both where generated by epslatex terminal. I am using
TexShop on a mac os x, so what follows apply to latex on mac os x, and
might not apply to other situations. My figure was broken in the pdf
file generated by Latex typesetting. I was wondering what could
possibly be the problem, and I searched google to find this thread. I
tried pause -1 between plot commands, didn't work!. Anyways, I am by no
means an expert on latex or gnuplot, but I believe that fig.eps picture
file has problems when included in the picture environment in the
fig.tex file that what I discovered after some experimentation. So I
have the following procedure:
1. do your multiplot as usual and set the terminal epslatex and the
output file (say fig.eps) pretending there is no problem.
2. convert the fig.eps file to fig.png
3. edit the fig.tex file to include the fig.png file rather than
fig.eps (explicitly write fig.png)
4. include the fig in latex by \input{fig} (with no extentions).
Typeset latex and generate your pdf file you will see the pictures
generated from fig.png and that from fig.tex are intact, but displaced.
5. edit the coordinates in the second picture environment command to
fit the two together.
6. finally edit the labels, and the other fine things you want to see
in the plot.
7. typeset again to see if everything looks fine.
hope that help.
thanks

Dear Gnoplot Representative,
Glancing through your gallery, I got the idea that
the images I am sending to you are possible in
reproducing accurately with your software. I was
wondering if you could confirm this and possibly guide
me in making them. I appreciate your time.
Thnak you,
Maura

In which terminal driver?

You can do exactly that in gnuplot, if you choose one of the terminal
drivers that output text via (La)TeX, most notably pslatex.

That cannot work --- the closing " is missing.

Hi Murat, You can specify different ranges for each function in square bracktes, = e.g. use something like plot [0:10] f(x), [5:15] g(x) Regards Till |

Hi. My name is Murat, from turkey. I've met to gnuplot a few days ago. I want to make use of gnuplot, but I have a problem which I can't solve it. Ýf you're make me help, I'll be very pleasure. I need drawing three different bivariant polynom e.g f(x),g(x) and h(x). I know that using multiplot function is posible. But I want that all drawing on the same graphic and each polynom must have to different range. For example; a,b,c and d may be coordinat values along the x axis. f(x) polynom's graphic between a and b (xrange[a,b]), g(x) polynom's graphic between b and c (xrange[b,c]),h(x) polynom's graphic between c and d (xrange[c,d]). I look at the origin commmand, but I think that this command working with screeen values. Therefore using of coordinat values on range definition is not possible. My ask for you is this subject, How can I draw three functions with special ranges in same coordinate system? Already now thanks for suggestions. yours respectfully murat selim cepni ms...@ya... ____________________________________________________________________________________ Finding fabulous fares is fun. I would be very grateful if someone could show me how to put a hat (^)
directly above w and a tilde (~) directly above D. In Latex one would
write $\hat{w}$ and $\tilde{D}$. I tried
set label "\\{\303{w}_{k,16}\\}@^{16}_{k=1} at 0.694, 0.846 left
but I got the hat on the lefthand side of w and not directly above w.
However, I want "^" directly above w and "~" directly above D. Thanks
for any help.
Amos.

It's unclear to me what it is you actually want, so I can't tell you if it can be done. What is "the default X and Y range"? Please be sure to read "help xrange" and "help autoscale" before replying, so you can gnuplot can display asymptotes via 'set arrow' commands or as additional curves in 'set parametric' mode. It can't compute where the asymptotes should be, though. |

If your input data has error bars, "smooth unique" will average their endpoints just like it does the y values themselves. It won't compute what you originally seemed to be looking for, though: minimum and maximum y values. > How can I do it? plot 'data' using 1:2:3 smooth uniq with errorbars |

Hi all I would like to use gnuplot together with maxima (computer algebra system) for didactical purposes. It would be very useful if gnuplot were able to set the default X and Y range and to plot a dotted line to make asyptotes visible. Is it possible to achieve such result, through a proper configuration setting? thank you -- Pol |

How can I do it? Thanks, Leonardo. |

Hello, I am ploting three data files using the "smooth unique" option in the following way: plot "file1" using 1:2 title 'A' w lines smooth unique, "file2" using 1:2 title 'B' w lines smooth unique, "file3" using 1:2 title 'C' w lines smooth unique I would like to know if it is possible to do this same plot but showing the ranges of the values in the y axis (i.e. to evaluatethe variance), instead of only the averages. Thank you very much. |

Hi Rudolf,=0A=0AYou can (sort of) by using the multiplot, but its not ideal= as the x and y range and everything have to be manually moved around and y= ou have to scale and move the two plots so that they overlap (using set siz= e and set origin). I've gone through this process for vector plots (vector = plot over a pm3d contour). If you just want points and things though then t= ry splot 'data.dat' u 1:2:(10), where data.dat is your 2D plot data and (10= ) is just a number greater than the z range of your pm3d plot.=0A=0AHope th= is helps,=0A=0AGavin=0A=0A=0ADear Supporter,=0A=0AI'm wonder whether I can = splot a pm3d map and plot at the same time, so that I can put points or sig= ns to a map plot, as it would be a regular 2D plotting.=0A=0AIs it possible= with gnuplot?
