thank you for you replies, they were actually very helpful. I know now how to
circumvent the issue with the out of order label when specified explicitly -
though the differences in treating values is not intuitive from an users
standpoint, though clear when you realize that the explicit labels are treated
as strings in contrast to the numeric values from the range specification. I
know, I know, RTFM ...

I will play around with your suggestions regarding the xrange assignment for
w(x)=2.*pi*x ....

there are several ways:
a) ternary operator in 'using' option:
plot "datafile" using 0:($1>0?$1:0/0) with linespoints
b) specifying "0" as missing character:
set datafile missing "0"
plot "datafile" with linespoints
c) filtering outside of gnuplot:
plot "< awk '{if ($1 > 0) print $0}' datafile" with linespoints
BUT this will change the numbering of your points

hello,
as per 4.2 doc
set term 5#5terminal_type6#6 size 5#5XX6#6, 5#5YY6#6 controls the size of
the output file, or canvas
set size 5#5XX6#6, 5#5YY6#6 scales the plot itself relative to the size of
the canvas
set terminal postscript {size <XX>{unit},<YY>{unit}}
The default size for postscript output is 10 inches x 7 inches.
so i did
set terminal postscript size 10.0,10.0 mono
set size 0.5,0.5
set output "plot1.ps"
#set multiplot
#set size 0.5 ,0.5
plot "plotable.dat" using 1:2 title "bu" wi li
#unset multiplot
to plot in one fourth area of the graph, but instead 'canvas' is decreased
to 0.5,0.5 but instead on doing
set terminal postscript size 10.0,10.0 mono
#set size 0.5,0.5
set output "plot1.ps"
set multiplot
set size 0.5 ,0.5
plot "plotable.dat" using 1:2 title "bu" wi li
unset multiplot
gnuplot works as desired.
my question is it necessary to be in multiplot mode when dealing with
scaling or am i missing the concept of 'canvas'?

recently I detected an issue with gnuplot someone might be able to help me
with:
I am using the y2-axis for angle plotting. I say:
y2range[-90:90]
set y2tics
set y2tics add ("-90" -90, "90" 90)
now, the "-90" value looks ok, the "90" value sits too close to the axis
(compared to the rest of the y2-axis labels). This is the case for both the
postscript and the wxt - terminal. The solution is to modify the "set y2tics
add" - command:
set y2tics add ("-90" -90, " 90" 90)
i. e. add a blank in front of "90".
This behaviour shows in both gnuplot 4.2.5 and in 4.3.0 from March timeframe.
Secondly, I often use expressions with omega, say omega=2.0*pi*x (x meaning
the frequency f in this case ..). Is there any way to make gnuplot use say "w"
rather than "x", where w=2.0*pi*x, rather than defining
w=2.0*pi*x
and writing
XL(x)=w(x)*L

That makes it even more obvious that the problem is with the quotes, and
explains why you didn't have a problem using the same awk command in the
shell: the outer pair of quotes doesn't appear in the shell command, and
thus the problem with nested quotes doesn't apply. The backslash it's
complaining about is the one of the \n you've now put back in, and it
gets complained about because to gnuplot's command-line parser, it
appears outside any string. Which it shouldn't.
You have to quote the inner "double quotes", and the backslash:
plot "< awk '{if (($2 == 26) && ($3 == 160)) printf(\"%.2f %.8f\\n\",
$1,$6*4/exp(log($1)*3))}' coordinates.dat " using 1:2 wi li title "26"
[all on a single line]
OTOH, I would suggest to drop awk and instead do it all in gnuplot:
plot 'coordinates.dat' u (($2==26)&&($3==160)?$1:0/0):($6*4/($1**3))
