Hi Domenik,
just guessing into the dark:
have you tried to run the programs within "prepare" manually? Is it propable 
that you haven't installed one of the "ac***" - tools? You need autoconf, 
aclocal, m4, automake, autoheader and, besides this, the entire development 
toolchain?

Maybe you want to try to call aclocal, m4, automake from the commandline to 
see whether you have those tools installed.

./prepare: 47: aclocal: not found

Some part of the preparation process failed.
Please refer to INSTALL for details."


That of course is a result of a missing automake on by ubuntu -.-

Of course not.  That's not what it's supposed to be run from.

Hey,

I'am using the gnuplot-CVS-Version 4.3 by following the instructions on
http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/development/index.html#BuildingFromCVS
but the "./prepare"-step  does not work from the /gnuplot/src dir. It 
does not work from /gnuplot either.
make wants me to run ./configure which does not exist :)

I'am running a Linux version 2.6.28-11-generic (buildd@palmer) (gcc 
version 4.3.3 (Ubuntu 4.3.3-5ubuntu4) ) on an amd64-system. (cat 
/proc/version)

Any suggestions, did i left some information out?

for fitting a two-dimensional function you need 4 data columns
"x:y:z:weight", see:

and if your data columns are - as an example -  arranged like this:
#line_number weight x y z
1 0.5 7. 6. 8.
then the fit command would be:
fit ... using 3:4:5:2 ...

I want to do a fit where that am using two input from my data file and one
parameter, but I cannot really figure out how to do that (or if its even
possible :-)).
 
I was thinking of (for instance) :
 
d(x,y)= a*(x-y)
 
fit d(x,y) "data.dat" u 1:2:3 via a
 
But now it is not really clear for me .... how I can specify in the above
line that is has to take x from column 2 and y from column 3 (for instance).
Because in the above 1:2:3 is saying horizontal, vertical and error.
 
Anybody an idea?

That's the source of your problem.  By using this out-of-date syntax, 
you're activating implicit pm3d mode, which would make *every* splotted 
dataset a pm3d, so you can no longer do a line splot.  That used to be 
the only way, but that's been changed several versions ago.

What would be the recommended way to plot line segments with varying 
color (a multicolored single line plot)?

The 4.2 documentation says that "rgbcolor variable" "is only available 
in 3D plotting mode (splot)".

The 4.3 documentation doesn't mention this restriction.

Can 4.3 take the color of line segments from a column of data?

Is there any way to do this simply (or not) in 4.2.5?

[Gnuplot-info] how to plot 2d lines on 3d picture

If I understand you correctly this is a bit of a pain, but can be done
using multiplot. you usually have to set the size and ranges... heres
a script I used to plot a field using pm3d and overlay some points (2D
data, but splotted so the z axis is greater than the z-axis of the
pm3d plot).

I am doing the job to plot ion orbit in electric field. I have plotted
the electric field using following command:

And, I have figured out the ion orbit, it could be plot easily by "
splot 'ion-5' with lines".
The problem is that how to plot the two pictures at the same time using
the same Coordinate. I mean plot the orbit on the electric field picture.

Yes, in the batch file, I have many more plots defined (hence, many more
`set output' and `set term' commands).

I tried adding a `set output' command directly after the multiplot block
but to no avail.

I am having a little trouble placing with clustered histograms. I am graphing some simulation data (see http://www.delta-phi.net/images/dropRatio.png for my current image).

First, I'm only using clustered histograms so I can give a label to a group of values (Simulation Runs using a similar parameter set). So if there is a better way to achieve this, I'd be happy to stop using clustered histograms.

In my graph the labels for the clusters are placed within the graph, rather than on the outside as seen in Example 7 and 8 at http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/demo_4.3/histograms.html

Is there any way to force Gnuplot to put the labels on the outside?

The other issue i'm having is with the legend. As I'm only partitioning one dataset into clusters, I want to use the same color everywhere - setting the line type solved that. I then got a legend for every single cluster. Turning off legend generation for all but one cluster solved that. But as you can see from the image, something is still wrong with the legend: It seems as if there were four additional invisible entries. Apart from looking really stupid this prevents me from having the keys displayed horizontally.

When I run this using gnuplot (v4.2 patchlevel 4), the last eight plots
have only plot titles and axes labels --- no histograms.  The problem
stems from specifying  linecolor on the plot command:

1. Specifying a linecolor on one plot command is O.K..  All ten plots
are correctly drawn.

2. Specifying a linecolor on two plot commands causes problems.  All
plots after the second plot command containing a linecolor specification
have only plot titles and axes labels drawn.

So, if I specify a linecolor on the first and second plot commands, the
first two plots are fully drawn.  If I specify a linecolor on the first
and third plot commands, the first three plots are fully drawn.  The
rest of the plots have only plot titles and axes labels.

Other terminals I've tried (i.e., postscript and emf) behave properly.
