Thanks for your hints and efforts on helping me out. The version number of
my wgnuplot is 4.3 pathlevel 0,

I guess it could be some mysterious issues with the setting for my windows
-- I have hibernated my operation system many times, thus something might
goes wrong .... After restart wgnuplot and issue 'reset xy', it does not
show up neither ...

I cannot reproduce what you met by 

gnuplot> plot sin(x)
gnuplot> reset xy
               ^
         line 0: warning: expected optional axis name
               ^
         ';' expected

Of course, 'reset xy' is not right way ('reset x; reset y' is right) and it gives error like the
above.

The "reset xy" did not triggered some hidden command which brings up the
reference lines or baselines or ruler or something like this, thus some
reset command should work at least in my case.  

I have confirmed at wgnuplot version 4.4.0, 4.2.6 and 4.2.3.     
I have execute the test on the windows xp pro sp3.

'!cd ...' ! is not needed.  The command cd is internal one.

For example

cd 'c:\data\example'

Please do not forget path should quoted by ' (single quotation mark).

I don't know which version is for the wgnuplot, but I installed it within
last year. I issued command "reset xy" and it complained error, and, two
crossing lines like some reference lines shown on the graph, any commands
before issuing this command worked fine, thus I don't think the phenomonon
is related to them.

I guess the "reset xy" triggered some hidden command which brings up the
reference lines or baselines or ruler or something like this, thus some
reset command should work, I guess,

{/Symbol \245} is the symbol for infinity

and it works fine.


Oh I hope that there will not be any more surprises and any more
problems with the new version of Gnuplot-4.4.0 which I just

wgnuplot is not a version, it's the name of the executable.  The version 
is what it prints as you start it.

To obtain accented characters like ü or ˆn in your labels you should use
8bit character codes together with the

appropriate encoding option. See the following example:

Hi

I think I have done it! It seems that I did not set up the superuser
password before. So I followed the instruction of a website page for
superuser password for MacBook Pro. I opened the Directory Utility located
in Application » Utilities. I  unlocked the Directory Utility to make
changes. Once it's unlocked, I went to Edit » Enable Root User, and then
typed in a password for my root user.

Then I went into my Gnuplot-4.4.0 directory and typed

$su
$password :
$./configure
$./make
$./make install

Then I typed :

$gnuplot
$plot sin(x)
$plot sin(x) w l lt 2 lt 3 lc 4

It works now.

I then pulled my Gnuplot-4.4.0 folder from the "Desktop" folder to the
"Application" folder and typed again:

$gnuplot
$plot sin(x)
$plot sin(x) w l lt 2 lt 3 lc 4

It works fine too. So it seems that it does not matter where I put my
Gnuplot-4.4.0 folder?

and I typed

./configure
./make
./make install

it did not work!

when you mentioned:

./configure --prefix=/home/peggyli

what does "--prefix" refer to?

and typed in my password, it said

gnuplot foo.gp -
instead of 
gnuplot --persist foo.gp


'-' after script is important.
gnuplot> help batch/interactive

To launch an interactive session after an initialization file "header" and
 followed by another command file "trailer":
       gnuplot header - trailer

In the way like
gnuplot foo.gp -

'trailer' part is omitted. The gnuplot goes interactive session after the script foo.gp is executed. 
The gnuplot is  in interactive session so that you can use mouse operation on graph window like zoom.

[Gnuplot-info] gnuplot in persist mode

Hi,

I like to write shell scripts to use gnuplot because I can pass
command line paramaters to it, e.g. to specify whether I want gnuplot
to draw a plot on the screen or to export the same plot to a pdf file
or to draw same plots in different scales.
But when I draw a plot on the screen using x11 terminal, I have to run
gnuplot from shell in persist mode: "gnuplot -persist foo.plt". The
problem is that when you run gnuplot in this persist way you cannot
zoom into plot or enable/disable grid.

Can anyone suggest a better method, or could maybe persist mode be
implemented in such a way that zooming would be possible.

you are using gnuplot 4.0,
you should upgrade to an actual version.

it works fine.

Howeve, when I tried

gnuplot > plot sin(x) w l lt 1 lc rgb "blue"

I received following error message :

' ; ' expected

[Gnuplot-info] Plotting 3D radiation patterns

Hi,

I want to plot a 3D antenna radiation pattern obtained from a field 
simulator. The data is stored in a csv with the following structure:

#x, #y, #z, (#value)

The fourth column #value specifies the magnitude of the antenna gain in 
the direction (0,0,0) - (x,y,z).

At first I want to plot a mesh of the (x,y,z) data, which should be 
non-transparent (as it is supposed to be a surface plot).

With

splot "datafile.csv"

I get a (more or less nice) graph with the different points specified in 
the datafile. How can I create a surface plot using these points with 
the color of the plot representing the distance to the origin? Or can I 
use #value somehow to display a special color to the surface?


At the end, it should look like this:

the animation, just a single frame) or this:

if you could replace the color names by color indices you could
use a specially tailored color palette. this would reduce the above
command to
plot "datafilename" using 1:2:3 with points linecolor palette
