[Gnuplot-info] How to add colors?

Hi again,

So now I have a file that looks like this

1 4 Blue
5 7 Red
6 1 Green
1 3 Blue
8 3 Blue
9 2 Red
5 1 Green
...

The colors are placed randomly, so it is not always like: Blue would appear
on every 3rd line or so.

I want it to just put the dots in different colors, How would I set that?

I tried

set term gif size 9240,291
set output "public_html/test.gif"

and it worked out.
Once you click on it on the website, it shows so small and then you can
click on it, it zooms and you can scroll and go forward. It is all clear.

Summary of question:

Is there a way to send a single data point to append to an existing
series.  Ie a graph exists with a single series of n data points, and
I was to update it so that there's a single series of n+1 data points.

Details of question:

I'm using gnuplot to visualise data as they are collected from an
experiment.  I'm doing this via python (Gnuplot.py).

Currently, it's being done in a way that I consider to be inefficient:
1.  I have lists of the x and y data, and use the plot command to plot them.
2.  When I get new data, I append the new data to the lists, and then
plot them, which deletes the existing data and plots the whole lot
again.

In other words, I might have 1000 data points plotted, and when I get
my 1001st data point, I clear the 1000 data points and then plot 1001
data points (which is implied with the plot command)

Is it possible to simply add the 1001st data point to the existing
graph somehow?  Not as a new series, of course, but appended to the
existing series?

PS:  Of course, using replot, I could add a new series of 1 data
point, formated to look the same.  I somehow think that this is even
less efficient.  Any thoughts on this option?  I attach two files:

 * liveGraphing2.py shows the python code for plotting the whole file.
 It takes about 10.2 seconds to plot 100 data points with 0.1 second
delay between each.

 * liveGraphing2b.py using replot to plot just the latest additional
data point as a new series.  It takes about 12.2 seconds to plot the
same 100 data points with a 0.1 second delay - ie computational
overhead takes about eleven times longer.  (Without the delay it gets
itself confused and crashes)

that's done automatically. each input line is numbered.

if you want to plot specific data only, have a look
at the 'every' option of the 'plot' command.

if you want to use the automatic data numbering use
the 'using' option of the 'plot' command: 'plot ... using 0:...'

combine the two file outside gnuplot:

plot "< paste X.dat Y.dat"

if you are using a windows system you may need to
install 'gnuwin32' to be able to use the 'paste' program.

Please use gnuplot.exe(ver 4.4 or later) or wgnuplot_pipes.exe.

Summary: cygwin and 'tr'

I encountered a similar problem with , and rather than adjust locale, I 
am just filtering that character from the input line (see below).

Whether this works depends on
1) whether your system has pipes and the GNU text tools called 'cat' and 
'tr' (as any Unix would)
2) whether your data has legitimate ' (or in my case ,) characters that 
are needed. Mine does not.

So instead of plotting 'datafile' directly I now say:

plot "< cat datafile | tr -d ','" \
         using 1:4 \
         with points ps 0.25

[ Note, for me ',' as above, but for you ''' or perhaps \' ]

I wouldn't want to try this on a Windows box UNLESS the Windows box 
already had the Cygwin tools on it, in which case I suspect the above 
would work fine. I haven't tested the Windows/Cygwin version though.

Cygwin really makes Windows much less unbearable. Good luck!

if the terminal you are using is supporting the 'size' option:

set terminal ... size x,y

have a look the documentation of your terminal.

Hi all,

I got gnuplot last night and have been working with it since this afternoon.
 I enjoyed it a lot.

But I still need to figure out:

How to make the x axis look longer in the plot or more importantly in the
out put file. I am plotting the data from a long range of dates and if it
keeps putting them in a small standard size plot nothing could be understood
from the plot.

I tried it with excel and when the graph is 9240*291 pixels, it gets
readable. But now the gnuplot graph is 640* 480 and I do not know how to set
the x axis to be longer.

Right now my x axis looks like:
set xdata time
set timefmt "%b %d %H:%M\t"
set format x "%b %d %H:%M"
set xlabel "Date & Time"
set xrange [*:*]


what is the command to make it longer?

I know that this is not a scientific way of displaying numbers for a 
scientific plotting program...
But before changing all the data there might be a way to tell Gnuplot to 
accept such numbers.

I tried:
set locale "Italian_Switzerland.1252"

because this uses ' as thousand separator and . as decimal point.
However, in the above example Gnuplot takes the 12, 3, and 1 and ignores 
the rest.

Any ideas?

mode a 2nd time:

[Gnuplot-info] gnuplot inside custom wxWidgets interface

Hi,

I would like to insert a wxWidgets terminal from gnuplot inside a wxWidgets
application, for example to insert it inside a wxPanel object.

Any idea on how to make it?

I usually access gnuplot using "popen" and passing commands by "fprintf",
but it opens it in a separate window, I would like that the window is
inserted in an existing panel in my application ...

Therefore the slowness issue seems to be environmental dependent so that it perhaps is not easy to
solve this issue without cooperation from those who have met the same phenomena and have enough
knowledge around system.
At least for me (win XP sp3 window version gnuplot), I have not reproduce the slowness issue so that I
cannot contribute solving the slowness issue of gnuplot 4.2.6.
