I cannot reproduce what you met by 

gnuplot> plot sin(x)
gnuplot> reset xy
               ^
         line 0: warning: expected optional axis name
               ^
         ';' expected

Of course, 'reset xy' is not right way ('reset x; reset y' is right) and it gives error like the
above.

The "reset xy" did not triggered some hidden command which brings up the
reference lines or baselines or ruler or something like this, thus some
reset command should work at least in my case.  

I have confirmed at wgnuplot version 4.4.0, 4.2.6 and 4.2.3.     
I have execute the test on the windows xp pro sp3.
