You know I usually try to be low key and rather release new versions than talk much about them, but this time it will be different. Here is a transcript from the webpage. I'm available for employment now. If anybody feels like making me an offer, my mailbox is eagerly open, and here is a link to my CV. Denmark, UK, The Netherlands, or Florida would be my preferred destinations, but I can consider others. I'd like to thank everybody that has sent me feedback on their usage of EtherApe. It has been very useful. Let me tell you that I'm not stopping development. I'd love to add up the final touches to reach version 1.0 so as to go on onto more drastic changes for 1.x Before releasing version 1.0 I'd like to have: * User chosen methods for protocol color assignments. * User chosen alternatives for name display. * Finished basic online documentation. Stuff to do afterwards include: * Turning the capture engine into its own library in order to help the development of further front ends. * Developing a generalized scheme for multiple, remote network interface reading. This should help in switched environments and in building a way to overview a whole system, not just a LAN. * More statistics windows. * Ability to dump information gathered onto a file, or a database. End of degree project documentation As part of the process of the end of degree project, I had to write some documentation. Unfortunately it had to be written in Spanish, and so it will only be available in that language until I get around to translating it. There are two documents: * The report: This version includes the skeleton of a couple of chapters that were not included in the final version, but that I intend to finish writing. Comments are welcome. * The presentation: Slides for the 20 minutes presentation. What you are in effect asking for is for EtherApe to mimic Interman behaviour. This is a bit more complicated and it will take a while, but in the meantime here is an alternative. You can filter internal-internal and internal-external traffic. See http://etherape.sourceforge.net/FAQ.html You could run two different instances of EtherApe, each with a different filter. In about one month I'll be defending EtherApe as my end of degree project in my engineering school. As part of the process, you'll probably like to hear that I'll (hopefully) write some proper online help docs. I would like to ask from you to send me feedback about what you have been using EtherApe for, so that I can use that in my presentation. Any other information that you think that might be relevant would also be much appreciated. :-) On other news, I realized yesterday that the per mode name selection code was not actually working (for instance, NetBIOS names were shown instead of /etc/ethers entries, in ethernet mode). It all sounds very nice indeed (although I think that reading backwards or going back is not as straight forward as the rest of the items) but I'm afraid that I won't be able to update EtherApe for a while. I will happily accept and merge patches, though. :-) Have you ever tried programming with libglade? It _SO_ easy. I would like to propose some possible enhancements:
- It would be nice to be able to change timing when reading from a capture
file. Something like (capture.c)
ms_to_next = factor * (diff.tv_sec * 1000 + diff.tv_usec / 1000);
with a nice slider for factor...
and resetting timeouts when changing the factor...
- Show date/time info (because current date/time is of no use).
Absolute or relative time.
- Maximum and minimum fixed time between packets.
Something like:
ms_to_next = max(ms_to_next, MIN_WAITTIME);
ms_to_next = min(ms_to_next, MAX_WAITTIME);
- Add fast forward (and backward) reading.
- Read compressed capture files (with zlib)

Perhaps what I was trying to say (and then I got mixed up) is that not everytime the position a protocol has in the stack will relate directly to the function stated in the OSI model. And the, because of the way that EtherApe identifies protocols it would be pretty difficult to fix it. Maybe I should state more clearly that the protocol stack level dropdown does not intend to be OSI correct, and the examples are there just for reference. More than ICMP, what bothers me is that in FDDI and Token Ring, there is always the LLC header over ther 802 header, and that is being counted as a protocol stack level. In fact, the stack level chooser in the preferences window is not aiming at displaying the exact protocol layer in the OSI model, but rather the level in the stack of protocols. improvement since the 0.74 version !!
I found the way to crash etherape. Click on the button to have the protocol
window and then hit the stop button. On my computer I see the crash window.
Other point : you put the ICMP protocol in the layer 4. I am not agree with
that. ICMP use and is a part of IP. It's layer 3. Each IP implementation must
have ICMP.
Each time I start etherape, colors change. Are you planning to save colors or
to had a color window ?
It would be useful for me if I could choose only protocols that I need to
see. Are you planning to add this feature ?

I believe that is probably because you are running the newer binary, but you have not installed the whole package. When you are going to install a new version from source, make sure you have deleted old files by using # make uninstall In the older build directory, and that you are installing the newer one by using # make install on the new build directory. I believe the problem is with the etherape.glade file. Make sure that the one installed is the one of the newer version. Regards, Juan.
