I get the message "Error getting device: No suitable device found." I have installed etherape from the sourceforge site and out of the directory, once I type in ''etherape", I get the interface with the message already displayed. I can 'x' out the dialogue box but when I click start, I get the same message. Any suggestions besides reinstall? thanks, -m |

What are you using for your xserver on windows? I have etherape Xing out from a server to my workstation, and it works = fine. VNC isnt going to work well for this. You can try tight VNC with the options tuned for performance, and using a seperate network interface fromt he monitoring interface to increase your performance. I would say try using Trafshow or iftop. Cli tools are more remote access friendly =) > -----Original Message----- > From: Jon Lyons [mailto:jly...@ya...] > Sent: Tuesday, September 14, 2004 1:27 PM > To: eth...@li... > Subject: [Etherape-users] Etherape and exporting display to windows > machine? > > > Hey all, > > I just started playing with etherape, however the > server running etherape is located in our datacenter > without a monitor. Red Hat Linux release 8.0 (Psyche) Etherape 0.9.0 compiled cleanly, made, and worked great. Currently running Cygwin (www.cygwin.com) on a laptop for x-server, and linux box running etherape is a cheapo dell optiplex g1 with three nics: NIC 1 =3D nic for system, x-windows, ssh, and general access NIC 2 =3D span port for first switch (6509) NIC 2 =3D span port for second switch (6509) My typical use: ---------------- My typical scenario is I will span a port on the switch to one of the nics. I use ntop for general reporting and such, tcpdump for command line viewing, and now I'm happy to say I have etherape for some serious eye candy and realtime troubleshooting. example: we have a site to site IPSec VPN tunnel , and I span the inside port of the vpn concentrator to nic2. Then, I run etherape, ntop, tcpdump, etc on nic2 and I can get good realtime info on what's happening between the two sites. Same thing with our firewall port(s), proxy servers, or shoot, entire VLAN's. When I'm not troubleshooting, I keep the VPN port spanned and the PIX port spanned. My current problems/issues/comments: ------------------------------------- - My preferences window won't display. I'm sure it's something to do with my x-server setup, but nothing from the menus will=20 display. The linux box is headless, so I'm unsure what I need=20 to do. Maybe it's that I'm not running Gnome? (Cygwin/XFree86) I see some other people have reported it, and the only answer I saw was get a bigger monitor. =20 - I share the same comments on the GUI as was previously posted. 2000-03-15 03:49 (yes, I read the list :) I personally would love to be able to move the hosts around and have it save prefs, but I can't seem to do that. =20 - Would also like to dynamically filter the display. ideal world? I have an input box on the screen, and I can type in a tcpdump-type expression and it will conform to that. So, I would start up etherape normally, but when I wanted to see something, say about just the smtp, I'd type in "port 25" or get down to a particular host with "host a.b.c.d and port 25" to see who my mail server is talking to. That kind of thing. All in all, love the product, but I bet it would work better for me if I could get the menu windows to come up and actually display preferences. I'm sure I'm missing a lot. |

I compiled and installed the latest stable version of EtherApe. Everything went without errors or warnings. When I run it an error box pops up that says: "Error getting device: no suitable device found" If I run it with -i set to eth0 I get: "Error opening eth0 : socket: Address family not supported by protocol - perhaps you need to root?" Same error, even when run it was root. This is what gets spit into STERR: ~ (etherape:25504): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed. I just installed on my 2nd redhat box - the 1st is installed and working fine. I get this error: [root@shuttle root]# etherape (etherape:17297): libglade-WARNING **: Unknown GtkToolbar child property: sensitive (etherape:17297): libglade-WARNING **: Unknown GtkToolbar child property: sensitive (etherape:17297): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: gobject.c:1032: object class `GtkTable' has no property named `orientation' No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig library is not correctly configured. You may need to edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual page and on http://fontconfig.org Suggestions ? I have no idea what it's talking about... the GtkTable error comes up on my 1st redhat box too, but it doesn't stop it from working. Thanks TheFinn. |

I have Etherape running great in OpenBSD, but this box has 3 fxp intel NICs. I would like to open multi instances of etherape and monitor a different NIC in each. Is this possible?
