[Etherape-users] Address family not supported by protocol

I compiled and installed the latest stable version of EtherApe.
Everything went without errors or warnings.
When I run it an error box pops up that says:
"Error getting device: no suitable device found"
If I run it with -i set to eth0 I get:
"Error opening eth0 : socket: Address family not supported by protocol - perhaps you need
to root?"
Same error, even when  run it was root.

This is what gets spit into STERR:

I looked through the docs but could not figure it out.
Any ideas?
