I tried building 0.7.3 on an i686-linux-gnu(2.2.2) but encountered a SIGSEGV
associated with:

[Etherape-users] What RedHat package provides the db2 dependency?

Hi there. :-)

I need the help of my users. Has somebody at all been able of installing
the binary package I'm producing? I've been told that it has a dependency
on a version of libdb2 that is not installed as default in RedHat systems.

Does anybody know how to solve that problem, which specific package
solves the dependency?

I don't think basic support should be hard to get. I just need an
example trace file so that I can see what it looks like and then
implement it.

What you have to do to create a capture file is 

# tcpdump -s 500 -w tracefile

Let it run for a while and then send it to me. If you do you'll
probably see it supported in the next version. :-)

Do make sure you are running tcpdump in the token ring interface,
in case it is not the default.

I'm told it is part of db2-devel. As far as I know you will also need the
alsa modules. I'm afraid these problems come from the fact that I am
producing the rpm packages from within a debian system.

I'll try to take away this requirements from future versions. I can tell you
that db2 is on db2-devel, but have no idea about libasound. :-(

Both problems probably relate to the fact that I am building the rpm
packages in my Debian machine, and I can't even test them afterwards.

Both dpkg and rpm create dependencies automatically checking the libraries
to which the final binary is linked to. That is probably why you are seing
alsa as a requirement, since that is what I have installed on my machine.

The db2 requirement I am a bit more surprised about. My own compilation
failed to complete until I had it installed, and I assure you I don't use
any function from that library directly. I guess it is a new gnome
dependency, but the autoconf macros have not updated to reflect the fact.

Perhaps if I installed db3 installed of db2? Is the third version standard
on Redhat installations?

In any case, the proper solution to the problem would be to "outsource"
redhat packages creation, since my machine is probably not the best place to
do those

Well, I would have rather made an actual update than announcing that I am
going to do it, but now it is so close that I guess it doesn't matter...

I _will_ be retaking EtherApe development at least from March to June.
Nevertheless, my first priority will be to get rid of the memory leaks once
and for all, and I might have to dissect the programs to pieces and it might
take me some time to actually release the first updated version (some time
_after_ March)

After that, I've realized EtherApe is rather more a real time tool than a
logger/statistics gatherer. There are better programs for that. So I will
also be cutting internal code that was there to gather statistics and whose
data was never displayed anyway.

And then, I'll be taking suggestions from you people. :-) I guess proper
color handling is the top user visible feature, and then probably more name
resolving, on the fly mode change...

But don't get too excited yet. As I said, nothing will happen until March.

I am not really sure why is happening, what has changed, but your
problem has an easy solution:

Just go into the preferences window, and click the Font button. Choose any
font  available, apply and save preferences and you'll be
all set.

As a long time user of EtherBoy and Linux, I was very happy to find your
functionally similar clone.  It seems to do its basic job quite well, but
I have a couple of issues with the display.  I think I prefer the more
circular node placement of EtherBoy to your somewhat diamond shaped
pattern.  Perhaps one of these two patterns code be chosen in the prefs.
My biggest GUI complaint however is the color scheme, or complete lack
thereof.  With the colors being assigned as the protocols are detected,
and not in any fixed order, when running on our large and busy network,
every time I start it I get a completely different map, sometimes with the
unique colors being assigned to unimportant traffic and all of the
important traffic like telnet/ftp/http being lumped together in the
neutral color.  I realize creating a GUI color picker as nice as
EtherBoy's would take some time, but I would be perfectly happy with being
able to edit a text config file and assign specific colors to protocols,
and then you could randomly assign colors to anything new/unassigned.
Well, keep up the good work, and I hope to see a new version soon :-)

I would like to think I have not abandoned EtherApe yet, but the sad truth is that
I have almost no time to dedicate it now. After the May finals I had the September 
finals, and I didn't do very well on either. Since then I've joined Nokia to get 
some money to pay for the new school year. It's a full time job, and obviously I 
still have more exams to get ready for in December.

I have been trying to install Linux at work in order to do something productive in 
slow work periods, but Nokia encrypts all its laptops at the HD level which makes 
impossible even an umsdos install, and since the laptop has W95 installed, vmware 
is a discarded option.

To make matters worse, the Nokia intranet blocks ssh traffic, which wouldn't allow 
me to reach the cvs server, and to get this job I had to move away from my city, 
where I had a nice cable connection, to a different city, where I don't even have a 
basic telephone line.

Yes, you are running EtherApe in ethernet mode, and what you are seeing are
only the nodes in your LAN.

What you want is internet mode. Run as 
etherape -mode ip

I'll make it the default in future versions, since a lot of people gets
confused with this.

I have just installed etherape-0.5.6-1.i386.rpm into a RH6.2 machine.

This Program is COOL!  It sure beats the crap out of text versions and greping
log files!

The only problem I'm running into is that the maximum number of nodes
displayed seems stuck at 9 or 10. The last displayed node keeps changing to
the latest accessed node. According to the picture, and postings in the
archive, there should be dozens of nodes. 

Am I missing something?

Also, where are the default settings stored?

I finally found a good reason to think about a name change.

I have just been contacted by the people at Helix, who would like to
include EtherApe with their distribution, but they feel that the "rape"
issue might  confuse potential users. So I'm asking anybody who cares
about the issue for ideas for a new name.

What I'm looking for in the name is something to would easily relate to
the function of the program, and has not been used before (which means
there are no previous entries in google). An example could be "Ethermap"
suggested to me by David Pollard, though the ether prefix is not
mandatory anymore, since we already analyze more than  ethernet alone.

So, I'll be waiting for your ideas, and I'll get back to development as
soon as I finnish my last exam on July 13th and I take a weekend off.

Since there seems there are a lot of people having problems with =
installing etherape because of the libglade version requirement, I'd =
like to ask a couple of question, to clarify the matter and take =
appropriate mesures. Anybody who has answers to at one of the questions, =
please reply (I just copied the requirement for libglade 0.11 from =
gnumeric, but maybe it is not actually necessary).

* What version of libglade does redhat 6.0, 6.1, suse, etc ship with?
* Has anybody with a lower version of libglade tried to force an =
etherape package installation? Did it work? With what version?

I need your feedback, in order to decide whether I can lower the version =
requirement.

Hi. :-)

There are a couple of solutions I might suggest. First, etherape requires
libglade, but I'm not sure about what version is necesasary, so you could
try to force the installation of the rpm.

But better yet, download the tar.gz version and compile it yourself. You'll
need the -dev rpms, but you should not have any incompatibilities.

Then again, you might want to have a look at the help forum in the project
page. I'm not that sure that your problem is different from the ones listed
there.
