First, thanks for the hard work and thanks for the contribution. As for how to upload it, that is a great question. Probably an attachment would be fine, tar/gziped, zipped, whatever. Just make sure you upload that attachment to the devel mailing list, not the user one. You guys sound like you have some great ideas and work to contribute. I might suggest you start up some conversation about these ideas, etc, on the development mailing list. If you would like to become more actively involved in the development of bmsync, we could probably add you as developers to the project. After you contribute your ideas/suggestions, we should probably get a roadmap of sorts officialized so that people can make code changes directly to cvs, of these sorts. I know Morbus has started that roadmap, but it sounds like their is plenty to be added. -- Paul Joseph Thompson cap...@sq... AIM/Yahoo/MSN IM: Captain Bunzo ICQ Number: 38801719 |

Good day. I'm Morbus Iff. I had nothing to do with the original BookmarkSync dev team, but have since made myself a general nuisance with the open-sourced version. You've probably seen my name on the lists, etc. I wanted to touch base with everyone concerning the latest that's going on with BookmarkSync, as well as announce the release of new minimal server code. - Outline of the Versioning Scheme - Announcing A New Minimal PHP Server - What's Next For The Minimal PHP Server? - YO YO?! WHERE'S THE ASP CODE, FOOL! OUTLINE OF THE VERSIONING SCHEME -------------------------------- First off, I wanted to outline the versioning scheme for all software downloads forthcoming from the BookmarkSync open source project: * middle ODD numbers are development "run at your own risk" releases. * middle EVEN numbers are considered "stable" to run in production. As such, the first release of the php-server-minimal code (with a version number of 0.1.0) was development code - the maiden voyage of logic that had originally lived on bookmarksync.com. The stable version (see below) is labeled 0.2.0. Bug fixes and updates will be reflected in the third digit (which has no even/odd connotations): 0.2.1, 0.2.2, 0.3.1, and so forth. ANNOUNCING A NEW MINIMAL PHP SERVER ----------------------------------- As expected, most of the bugs discovered in php-server-minimal 0.1.0 were related to deployment on your own servers: differing PHP configurations caused problems not encountered in our own testing. All of the tangible bugs reported have been fixed, and a new server is available for download, 0.2.0. You can get it from Sourceforge: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/bookmarksync/ The CHANGELOG for this release follows: - all database tables prefixed with syncit_ now. - upgrade.php added to convert plaintext passwords to md5'd equivalents. - CSS/XHTML valid gui added to the index.php. others pages to follow. - all GPL headers now include cvs keyword macros for modifications. - the view.php has been replaced with the tree view.php from Michael. - an images/ directory has been added to supplement view.php. - most of the tangible bugs from Yahoo! Groups have been fixed. ------------------------------------------------ IMPORTANT! If you're upgrading, run upgrade.php! ------------------------------------------------ Most importantly, if you're upgrading your 0.1.0 server, you should run the upgrade.php file that's included with the 0.2.0 distribution. This will update all the plain-text user passwords to a much more secure MD5 version, as well as rename all your database tables to have a syncit_ prefix. Failure to run upgrade.php is a bad thing, and nothing will work without it (save for starting over from scratch with a fresh install). You'll also want to modify the config.php and db.php files to reflect your installation. One of the goals of the next version will be to make configuration simpler, more upgrade-friendly, and more secure. The better visual appearance is still incomplete, but you can see an example at http://www.disobey.com/bookmarks/ - this will be expanded to include the other pages in a future release. WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE MINIMAL PHP SERVER? --------------------------------------- The most important goal for the next development version of the minimal server is "planning for the future". This will encompass: - finalizing the visual GUI across all pages. - allowing administrative tasks through the web. - finishing an explanatory document on all the db tables. - streamlining installation/upgrading via scripts. I probably won't start on any of the above for a few weeks - my regular writing gigs (my monthly column for MacTech, my third book, etc.) are becoming more insidious, and my time is growing shorter than I had ever hoped. YO YO?! WHERE'S THE ASP CODE, FOOL! ----------------------------------- Many folks have been wondering where the ASP/MSSQL code is. There is no estimated time of arrival for this. That code needs to be released by the original BookmarkSync development team, and they've been heartily busy with other things related to the transition from business to open-source. Likewise, unless interested developers step forward, they will be the ONLY ones continuing it's development, bug fixes, and file releases - my specialty is development with cross-platform languages like Python, Perl, and PHP. As such, I don't have the knowledge necessary to support that codebase, a fault that's purely my own. -- Morbus Iff ( take this ming! i'm sick of your dynasty! ) Technical: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/au/779 Culture: http://www.disobey.com/ and http://www.gamegrene.com/ icq: 2927491 / aim: akaMorbus / yahoo: morbus_iff / jabber.org: morbus -- Morbus Iff ( i put the demon back in codemonkey ) Culture: http://www.disobey.com/ and http://www.gamegrene.com/ Buy My Book! http://amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0596004605/disobeycom icq: 2927491 / aim: akaMorbus / yahoo: morbus_iff / jabber.org: morbus |

I created the database, imported the SQL file, and created my user as per the README. I exported the registry settings and imported them into my Windows machine. However, each time I run the client I have to manually edit the registry for the client to use the correct address of my server, it keeps defaulting to 127.0.0.1. Any ideas on this? Thanks Jeff |

Hello,
I added support for Mozilla & Firebird to the SyncIt client.=20
This is not a hack:=20
- the location of the bookmarks.html is determined automatically
- the updated client supports all browsers installed at the same time =
(IE +
Netscape + Mozilla + Firebird). Also, the client communicates with each
browser separately through DDE.
As a bonus, I also included the fix for latin characters (=E9, =F6, ...) =
and
HTML entities ("&", ...), which I posted earlier.
I don't have access to either the CVS or the file area... I therefore
attached the recompiled client (version 1.6) to the following bug =
report:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=3Ddetail&aid=3D824426&group=
_id=3D910
38&atid=3D595683
The changes to the source files will be posted tomorrow.
- Daniel

Hi All, I've been able to get a Syncit server up and running on my home network and the clients have no problem connecting. Problem is, my ISP blocks port 80 so I have to configure the server to work on port 8080. I'm then able to begin setting up my external clients (since in the syncit.reg I modified "root" to include ":8080") getting to the point where the dialog asking if I'd like to merge or overwrite the local bookmarks appears. I select either option and then it just hangs at step "C Uploading local bookmarks". Anyone have an idea whats up? Thanks, Steve --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Assuming your web designer is paid by you, he most likely has no=20 authority to restrict you from sharing his work. If you are his=20 employer, it isn't even his work - it's YOUR work. If that isn't the case, then all you have to do is ask him. Most=20 reasonable people have no problem giving back changes that make up less=20 then 1% of a pile of source that was given away openly. > Please, understand that the GPL applies only and > exclusivelly to the Syncit code and not to the entire > site which are hosting the service. >=20 > We are really sorry if we have caused any trouble. However, it is pretty much beside the=20 point. What will make this Open Source team feel all happy and rosy is=20 to simply know that you plan to share, to be a contributor and not a=20 user only of the software. I think, perhaps, you need to review the way that you presented this to=20 the team in the first place, etc. It was presented as a "new feature",=20 undoubtably as a way to get more users to pay for your server (nothing=20 wrong with that). And then people started asking for some happy sharing,=20 several folks felt that they were shut down. No matter WHAT you actually=20 modified, it came off wrong. Now, let me get something straight. You are completely free to modify=20 the SyncIt code without giving those changes back to us, assuming you do=20 not redistribute the code. However, if you choose to make changes and NOT give them back, don't go=20 advertising them on this list. It will only make people mad. Now, team, let's put all of that behind us and focus as a team on=20 actually working on SyncIt. Let's label this issue as a misunderstanding=20 and move on. I, for one, am glad that 2Go is around, both to provide SyncIt service=20 and to participate as members of this community. Let us not irritate=20 this by beating this dead horse silly. Hehe. Reminds me of an expression I learned from a French friend while I=20 worked on the SquirrelMail project. Apparently, they have an expression=20 that goes, "making the partridge dizzy". Apparently, the point is that a=20 partrdige is supposedly a dumb bird already, so to make it dizzy is=20 rather pointless. Ergo, to beat a dead horse. Anyhow, enough fun for now. --=20 Paul Joseph Thompson cap...@sq... AIM/Yahoo/MSN IM: Captain Bunzo ICQ Number: 38801719 |

Hi All, we think that there is being a misunderstanding here. We at 2Go never had the intention of breaking the GPL spirit. In fact all fixes or modifications or even suggestions we made on the Syncit open source were immediatelly shared with this community (Morbus Iff sure can certify this). The latest updates released at our website have absolutelly nothing to do with the Syncit open source simply because it's pure HTML customizations. Nothing more. We did not updated nor improved nor modified any part or feature of the current version of the Syncit open source that we are using. Since our web designer is not part of this community and did not authorize us to share his work we just can't do it and we really don't think that we are violating the GPL spirit by doing that. Please, understand that the GPL applies only and exclusivelly to the Syncit code and not to the entire site which are hosting the service. We are really sorry if we have caused any trouble. It was never our intention. We will continue to share any improvements or modifications eventually made to the Syncit code. Hoping we have clarified this matter, Best regards to everybody, 2Go Team. --- Jason Pascucci <jrp...@ya...> escreveu: > Unfortunately, this is a known fuzziness within the > GPL (to be fixed in GPL v3), although there is clear > sleeziness associated with someone exploiting it. > But, if there is enough money at stake, there might > be some wiggle room for the creators to hunt down > the violators based on the strict restrictions of > 'modification', 'copying', 'distributing', and what > constitutes private use - probably enough that a > lawyer would take the case on contingency if the > original copyright holders didn't care if they got > much from it. This is IMHO wrong. You may modify GPL code as much as you like, nobody = can force you to distribute anything to anybody. GPL only forces that = _if_ you distribute the binary of a GPL or derived program, you also = must give access to the source. But unless you distribute binaries, nobody has the right to get the = source from you. And execution on a public accessable server doesn't count as = "distribution of binaries". Ciao, Steffen |

While only=20 I don't like this. I can't understand why it is bound to the download = link in the original software. It might be difficult for huge software = packages to provide the bandwidth for source downloads on my own server. = The original GPL gives more cheap (for the developer) possibilites to = provide the source. Another problem is that even setting some variables during in the = original source would count as derivated work. And if you be strict on = the affero GPL, you had to provide the source with your database = settings you've entered into the original source. This doesn't make = sense, nobody wants to reveal his database password ;) Maybe the best would be to add a passage that states "running this code = on a public accessable server counts as distribution in the sense of = GPL" to make the server code free again. Unfortunately, this is a known fuzziness within the GPL (to be fixed in GPL v3), although there is clear sleeziness associated with someone exploiting it. But, if there is enough money at stake, there might be some wiggle room for the creators to hunt down the violators based on the strict restrictions of 'modification', 'copying', 'distributing', and what constitutes private use - probably enough that a lawyer would take the case on contingency if the original copyright holders didn't care if they got much from it. Certainly, anyone would _not_ be able to do this with the client side - you clearly have to redistribute binaries. The creators might want to issue further modifications to the server part of the software under the Affero GPL http://www.affero.org/oagpl.html license, and create a link in the software somewhere to download the sources - this forces people to require that the mod'd sources be available. While only the creators (holding the copyright) can relicense the original source and their changes to a more restrictive license, they cannot stop others from copying the existing version. However, they don't have to wait for a significant feature, they can just stop distributing the GPLd version, and distribute the equivelent Affero version, if making sure the software remains 'free' is part of their intent. -JRP Steffen Siebert <ste...@lo...> wrote: > Yes! > I asked it too (because the GPL) but the answer was > No. > > This software is released as GPL, so it should be used > that way. The GPL states, that you have to provide the source if you publish or distribute GPL licensed code. I doubt that running GPLed php code on a server counts as publishing or distributing, but I might be wrong. Sounds simple to me - we simply implement our own version of this feature in the official version of BookmarkSync. And then, when the 2Go people need help, we be nice and give it to them, and they will eventually realize it doesn't pay to be jerks. Or we will just pass them up with the coolness of the Open Source bookmarksync. There is no way that their team of programmers are going to be able to surpass what a community of developers will accomplish. To the people of 2Go - thank you for using BookmarkSync. However, you would be wise to realize that you will gain nothing long term by keeping your changes proprietary. In fact, you have much to lose by the bad press generated by lack of cooperation with the Open Source world. Think hard about this. Paul Thompson cap...@sq... Yes! I asked it too (because the GPL) but the answer was No. This software is released as GPL, so it should be used that way. Hi all, We've just released a new "My Bookmarks" page at www.2go.com.br Now only the selected folder will be expanded. The others will stay closed. This should help minimizing the size of the page, specially for those users with a great number os bookmarks. Att, 2Go Team. ----------- 2Go - what bookmarks are made to... |
