for your information SyncIt is currently continued by Jack Dean at 
Sync2It.com.

Jack has made some improvements - amongst other things - making a Mac 
version, and including Firefox support.

But help is needed to keep up with browser development, and fighting 
bugs... So why not join the effort ?? Contact Jack (ad...@sy...) - 
and get involved!!

I'm using sync2it 1.7.1 on w2k - work fine with FireFox. I had to get 
the source from sync2it (see releasenotes under download section) and 
make my own build on w2k to get it runnning.
Jack on sync2it uses winXP, and his build does not find the Firefox 
install on my w2k pc's..

As to registry: Jack provides a setup which generates values that 
matches his site - and thats OK (for us - his customers).
When You get the source I guess you'll be able to make some sort of find 
/ replace to insert your own server address.

If any on the list is an experienced c++ programmer (on windows) there 
are some issues regarding
- dumps when internet connection is down
- inconsistency in Firefox detection (see above)
- errors related to 'bad' links ind favorites
which we are many who would like to be solved - so please speak up!

My knowledge of c++ is restricted to being able to make a new build on 
existing errorfree source  :-(

Hi All,

I've been trying to get a recent bookmarksync client working with my
own (minimal-php version) bookmarksync server, and can't seem to find
a recent version of the client that handles FireFox and which will
work for me.

So far I've tried many different combinations of client and server
including :-

- server-php-minimal (release version 0.2.2 and 0.2.0)
- server-php-minimal (cvs head)

- client 1.4
- client 1.6
- Latest (and prior) sync2it 1.7 clients
- 1.6.x Clients from 2go.com
- 1.6.x Clients from other bookmarksync-using sites.
- Patched clients from http://www.mctubster.com/syncit

The only success that I've had so far is with the latest stable
php-minimal server version, and the 1.4 version of the client. This
happily syncs to and from Internet Explorer for me and so the 
server appears to be working ok.

The latest sync2it.com client doesn't seem to be accessing my server
even though I have a root value defined in the registry it tries to
HTTP POST to sync2it.com, and the other recent client versions seem
to crash with an RtlMagicDivide error before even trying to connect
to my bookmarksync server. I've cleared out all of the bookmarks on
one machine just in case there was a specific bookmark that the 
client didn't like, but that makes no difference.

I'm not sure if this is due to; my windows boxes' configuration, a
mismatch between my client and server version, or just a client bug.

Is anyone syncing Firefox and IE browser bookmarks onto their own
server ? If so could they point me towards the client/server version
that they are using. I'll then try that and if I see the same still
then I can start digging through the client source code.

Yes, I've seen this error.  Don't know if your circumstances are the
same as mine or not.  In my case it occurred when I had the client
installed from my wife's account (and it seemed to install for "all
users", but tried to sync from my own account on the same machine.  We
would like to maintain syncronized favorites on the accounts just as if
the two accounts were on separate machines.  I don't think I tried this
prior to SP2, so I can't make a comparison to if this error message is
"new" with SP2 or if its been there all along.

My workaround was to have the favorites from both accounts point to the
same exact file in shared documents.  This is not optimal since only one
account does the actual syncronization, but its relatively affective.

I recently reformatted and or re-install, installed XP Service  Pack 2 and
have been using 2Go2SyncIt 1.6.8 without too many problems.  I was  using the 
new AVG 7 Anti-Virus Program which seem to conflict with it, so I  
uninstalled it and went with Avast.  

Anyone out there using SyncIT with XP Service Pack 2

Agreed - I have the same issue using IE6 and Firefox on multiple machines.

You could hope for a single XML file containing bookmark data for 
multiple browsers combined with a cross-platform Java application to 
sync multiple machines with similar setups. Modules could be written to 
display these bookmarks as a collection of web links in a CMS system 
like Mambo or PostNuke. You could even deliver the entire collection to 
RSS-enabled browsers like Firefox for auto updating bookmarks! That 
would be a killer app for the continuing saga of browser wars.

users.  There is an issue with the patch and certain configurations.  Please

folder in documents & settings & still no go - the syncit client still isn't
communicating with firefox & there is no firefox.xml :(

I've searched my computer for any other files called phoenix, but no go :(

guilty one that compiled the binary at www.mctubster.com/syncit

Out of three computers, one of them behaved the same as yours below.  The
patch (looking at the code) appears to only work if it doesn't find the
registry.dat (for earlier versions of the browser) file located in your home
application data dir for phoenix, eg c:\documents and
settings\LOGON_NAME\application data\phoenix\registry.dat (path from mem)

Unfortunately I have never programmed C before, but I will hijack one of the
devs here to see if he can show me how to debug the code properly today,
because I fear my interpretation of the code is incorrect.

directory as 0.8 was in, telling it to import all settings from 0.8 when it
asked me to.  I then ran the patched syncit client, however it doesn't seem
to be communicating with firefox.  Bookmarks added in IE are uploaded to the
server correctly, but are not downloaded into firefox, and bookmarks added
in firefox are not uploaded.  I am running the syncs manually, when neither
browser is running.

Looking in the syncit directory, when I run a sync with the patched client
the files ending .ie.xml, .sub.xml and .xml are updated but .mozilla.xml and
.phoenix.xml are not.  If I run the original (stable) client, all 5 files
are updated.  What have I not done - do I need to clear our firefox & start
again, or clear out the client & start again?

Thanks - looks like that was the case - I shut everything down, re-setup my
bookmarks in IE, did a sync, and when restarted firefox had the correct
bookmarks.  I guess I'll just run the sync manually when firefox isn't
running from now on rather than leaving it to autosync!

Maybe you're right - the server side seems to be working now anyway!

Further to my last email, I was slightly mistaken - and now I'm not sure
what's going on.  When I first ran the client, it uploaded bookmarks from
both firefox 0.8 & IE6 & merged them on the server.  When I then checked
IE6, that had received the merged bookmarks back.  However firefox was still
displaying only it's own bookmarks.

A bit later I checked both browsers again, and now both of them only had the
firefox favourites.  I assume that this was because the next time it synced,
it saw the firefox favourites & thought I'd deleted some - it therefore
deleted them off the server & IE then got the reduced version.

At this point it therefore looks as though the issue is that firefox is not
receiving the merged bookmarks from the server.  However, just to complicate
matters I had a look at the xml files in my client directory.  These seem to
contain the merged bookmarks in their entirety!!!

So what's going on - why is firefox 0.8 not receiving the merged bookmarks
from the server when IE is, and why after another round of syncing do the
xml files contain the merged bookmarks but both browsers just have the
original firefox favouroites!!

yellowdog 3 host.  I followed the minimal setup instructions.  If I now
browse to http://host/syncit/config.php the config page comes up.  However
when I put my info in & press 'register' it just comes up with a blank page.
What have I missed, or how do I work out what's wrong?

In mysql I created a database (syncit).  I then created a user on the host
(useradd mysqluser), and ran 'GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON syncit TO
mysqluser@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'password'.  I ran FLUSH PRIVILEGES, and
then quit & ran 'mysql -u root -p syncit < bookmarksync.sql'.  If I run
'SHOW GRANTS FOR mysqluser@localhost' in mysql I see:

Just had to post to second the comment ssathue (Steve) about 
"2Go Bookmark Sync" ,   
I find that it works as well if not better than the orginal SyncIt
which I paid $50.00 for a lifetime use that lasted less than six months 
without any reimbursement whatsoever although I wrote to them two or three time and 
never even got any acknowledgement.

I've been using "2Go Bookmark Sync" for many months
now. It is a free service and is built with the same
code from the original bookmarksync.com - I'd say it's
even better than the original at this point; they now
send you a weekly report of all your bookmarks
including dead links, etc.

As I mentioned, it's FREE. As a very satisfied user, I
