Sylvain - Thank you very much for sharing this sad news. Bernard will be sorely missed. I greatly enjoyed the time I spent with Bernard in the "Alpha Cabal". I have fond memories of a spectacular lunch with him and Dominique on a visit to Paris many years ago. Bernard has been solely responsible for Alpha’s core development for many years. AlphaCocoa, in particular, is entirely his creation. I’m not sure that anybody that was not intimately familiar with the earlier incarnations of the Alpha source code can appreciate how monumental his effort was. Although I have not been active in Alpha development for a very long time, Bernard did graciously grant me admin rights to AlphaCocoa on SourceForge. If anybody in the community is interested in picking up maintenance of the project, I will be happy to facilitate. - Jon > On Oct 7, 2023, at 6:25 AM, Sylvain Loiseau <syl...@un...> wrote: > > Dear all, > > I’m very sad to have to inform you that Bernard passed away some month ago, after a long illness. Dear Sylvain, Thank you very much for your message. I'm very sorry to hear this sad news. I was just discovering the Cocoa version of Alpha, admiring how well designed and well done Bernard's code is. May he be thanked for this exemplary work. I really hope someone can continue this work. Dear Sylvain, thank you so much for your note, it is said to hear this. Alpha is indeed a fantastic package, the only one that can do proper email formatting among many other things. Hi, I've been using Alpha for many years and am still very happy with it. However, i have not been using it as much as I have in the past, so I don't know when this problem started. For whatever reason, I can no longer fire Embrace with Control B. When I hit that shortcut, nothing happens. I know that Embrace is still working because I have some TeX-specific bindings that use Embrace to put things in math mode. Those bindings still work. Does anyone have an idea of how I can restore Control B? Should I now be using a different shortcut? The help files seem to say the shortcut is still Control B. I'm using Alpha 9.2.3 on macOS 12.6 on a 2019 MacBook Pro. Best, John |

Could anyone advise what might be wrong with my Alpha setup?
The larger the text file, the slower the HOME and END keys act.
In a very large text file, HOME or END will hang Alpha (spinning wheel).
ESC< and ESC> work fine no matter the size of the file.
Alpha 9.2.3
OS X 10.14.3 Mohave
no customization
In menu Alpha/Global Setup/Keyboard Shortcuts/Special Keys...
'Describe shortcut' gives:
ESC< = beginningOfBuffer
ESC> = endOfBuffer
HOME = beginningOfBuffer
findPrevious
END = endOfBuffer

Hi all,
I'm pleased to announce the release of a new version of Alpha. This is Alpha 9.2.3 ("Suhail <https://alphacocoa.sourceforge.io/AlphaStar.html>") for Mac OS X 10.11 or greater (El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur).
All versions of Alpha are named after a star. So, for this new release, meet Suhail <https://alphacocoa.sourceforge.io/AlphaStar.html>, which is λ Velorum, the λ star of the Vela constellation.
Beware: the Maverick (10.9) and Yosemite (10.10) versions of OS X are no longer supported. The latest version of Alpha running on these two systems is 9.0.3.
See at the end of this message, the main changes contained in this new release.
Please, read the release notes which will be displayed the first time you launch Alpha and can be accessed later from the Help ↣ Developer Help menu.

I have been experiencing an issue that I’m not entirely clear on how to diagnose. I only recently acquired a new Mac with Big Sur installed, replacing a 12-year old Mac Pro. For many years I had relied on QuicKeys for many macro tasks. As QuicKeys is long dead, I have returned after many years to Keyboard Maestro, which I had relied on prior to making the move to QuicKeys. One set of personal KM macros I use frequently wrap text on the clipboard in HTML/CSS tags. For example, one macro takes a URL on the clipboard and turns it into a list item: http://url.org <http://url.org/> ---> <LI><A HREF=“http://url.org <http://url.org/>“></A> in a super-simple manner: Insert text <LI><A HREF=“ Paste from the clipboard Insert text “></A> This works fine in other text editors I sometimes use (including TextEdit and BBEdit), but in Alpha quite frequently (25-35% of the time) the inserted text is slightly garbled, with characters in the inserted text out of order from what’s specified in the macro, or occasionally just missing. For example, instead of "<LI><A HREF=“ what will appear is "<LI<>A HREF=“ or "<LI<A HREF=“ or "<LI<>A HREF=“ and similarly “></A> might become "“></>A” or ““<>/A>” or whatever. It’s not consistent, and I can invoke the same macro 20 times in a row and get 15 instances that are what they’re supposed to be and another 5 randomly mixed in with characters swapped around,, or occasionally dropped. I’m posting to this list because as noted I DON’T see this behavior when I invoke the same macro in other editors. I’m guessing it’s something to do with the inserted text being inserted too quickly, or something of that nature? I tried to fool around with pauses in the macro and so forth, to no avail. I’m also posting to the Keyboard Maestro forums, but thought I would put this out there here as well to see if anyone had any ideas I could try from the Alpha side of things. Thanks, David Craig PS. I had an equivalent QuicKeys macro that I used with Alpha for many years with no issues … but that was on a different machine, several operating systems behind where we are now, and an older version of Alpha. Not to mention with different macro software... <http://www.panix.com/~dac/> |

Hi Eberhard,
I can’t reproduce this. I just opened an R file from the Finder using Open With and got no such message.
Normally you would see this message ("Can't find app with id etc. ») only when you try to process the file from Alpha using « Process Current File » or « Process Selection » from Alpha’s S+/R menu.
In this S+/R menu, there is a command « Set Tools… ». This is the command you should use to set the command line R. Currently on my machine it is set to /usr/local/bin/R (Alpha tries to detect this automatically).
Concerning the GUI app (R.app or RStudio.app), you can also set this in the "Mode Options" submenu of the S+/R menu.
Does this answer your questions or did I miss something ?
Cheers,
Bernard

Bernard, if I open a file whatever.R either with alphac or "open with" I get a small error window saying Can't find app with id 'org.R-project.R' and telling me to change my Helper Applications. In the Global Setup I have set the R helper application to be located manually to /usr/local/Cellar/r/4.0.4/bin/R which is where homebrew put this version (with a symlink to /usr/local/bin/R). I use the command line version of R due to the fact that I use RStudio if I need a GUI. Can you or someone duplicate this, and if so, come up with a solution, please? While this is most certainly not time critical, would also appreciate if this were then made to also work on the symlink (/usr/local/bin/R) so it would survive homebrew updates. greetings, el -- Dr. Eberhard W. Eberhard, what does not work as expected ? Maybe I did not understand what you expect exactly ? Did you restart Alpha after putting set mode::Filepats(MAIL) *.mail in the prefs.tcl file ? This is necessary because this file is read at startup. Hi Eberhard,
here is a possible solution (if I understand correctly what you want to achieve):
1- put the following instruction in your prefs.tcl file
set mode::Filepats(MAIL) *.mail
2- create an empty file with this extension, for instance empty.mail or whatever.mail
3- then when you open this file with Alpha it is automatically in Mail mode.
It should do the trick (I just tested it).
Cheers,
Bernard

Bernard, is there a way of creating a file which when double clicked fires Alpha up in Mail Mode? On the new Thunderbird the External Editor plug-in does not work and a reasonable way would be to lay such an (empty) file onto the Desktop, double click it, copy and paste the mail content into the buffer, format as needed, and copy paste back to T-Bird. Not as elegant, but should work. |

Bernard. If you justify this paragraph you will see that (1?) has an added space behind it, whereas (1) does not. Of course a plain fullstop as end of sentence also has 2 spaces as it should, but when you put it into quotes "." or '.' it has also two so I would think that this (tiny little observation) is not a feature :-)-O greetings, el -- Dr. Eberhard W. Hello Eberhard,
yes this has been fixed.
The problem was that the proc text::isInSingleComment (which had been recently redefined) was confused by the > character at the end of the URL contained in this line.
The fix will be in 9.2.2.
