is there a way of creating a file which when double clicked fires
Alpha up in Mail Mode?

On the new Thunderbird the External Editor plug-in does not work and a
reasonable way would be to lay such an (empty) file onto the Desktop,
double click it, copy and paste the mail content into the buffer,
format as needed, and copy paste back to T-Bird.

Not as elegant, but should work.
