Photographers, digital artists, designers, and other users who need layered raster-image editing.

About PhotoCraft

PhotoCraft is a free, open-source raster image editor for photographers, digital artists, designers, and other creative users. It provides layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, text, vector tools, and brushes in a native desktop application, with a WebAssembly build that can be hosted separately. Users can make non-destructive edits with adjustment layers and live-preview filters, select subjects and objects on-device, and refine masks locally. The editor opens and saves layered PSD and PSB documents, supports smart objects and smart filters, and includes color-management tools for RGB, CMYK, Lab, and grayscale documents at 8-, 16-, and 32-bit depths. PhotoCraft is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and is distributed as free, open-source software.

"Top notch open source Photoshop alternative"

    Posted 2026-10-10

Pros: What I like most is that it feels familiar immediately. The layout, tools, shortcuts, layers, masks, adjustment layers, and PSD workflow are close enough to traditional professional image editors that there is almost no learning curve. The performance is another big plus. PhotoCraft is written natively in Rust and uses the GPU instead of wrapping everything in Electron, so the whole app feels much more lightweight than I expected.

Cons: The main downside is that it is still early alpha. There are still some tools, advanced typography features, generative AI capabilities, and plugin compatibility on the roadmap, so it is not a complete Photoshop replacement yet.

Overall: Overall, PhotoCraft is one of the most interesting open-source creative tools I have used recently. It combines a familiar professional editing workflow with native performance, real PSD compatibility, local processing, and unusually strong AI-agent automation.
