About

LightCraft is an open-source photo library and RAW editor for photographers who want to organize and develop images locally. It imports photos into albums and folders and supports ratings, flags, metadata search, sorting and duplicate detection. Non-destructive tools cover exposure, tone and color adjustments, crop and geometry, presets, black-and-white conversion, and local masks. It reads multiple camera RAW and common image formats and exports JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP and DNG. Users can compare edits, synchronize settings across selected photos, and create contact sheets. LightCraft runs on macOS, Windows and Linux; a WebAssembly build can be self-hosted. A command-line interface, JSON control channel and MCP server support automation. The library is stored locally, without an account or cloud service.

About

PhotoCraft is a free, open-source raster image editor for photographers, digital artists, designers, and other creative users. It provides layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, text, vector tools, and brushes in a native desktop application, with a WebAssembly build that can be hosted separately. Users can make non-destructive edits with adjustment layers and live-preview filters, select subjects and objects on-device, and refine masks locally. The editor opens and saves layered PSD and PSB documents, supports smart objects and smart filters, and includes color-management tools for RGB, CMYK, Lab, and grayscale documents at 8-, 16-, and 32-bit depths. PhotoCraft is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and is distributed as free, open-source software.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • What I like most is that it feels familiar immediately. The layout, tools, shortcuts, layers, masks, adjustment layers, and PSD workflow are close enough to traditional professional image editors that there is almost no learning curve. The performance is another big plus. PhotoCraft is written natively in Rust and uses the GPU instead of wrapping everything in Electron, so the whole app feels much more lightweight than I expected.

Cons

  • The main downside is that it is still early alpha. There are still some tools, advanced typography features, generative AI capabilities, and plugin compatibility on the roadmap, so it is not a complete Photoshop replacement yet.
