About

PhotoCraft is a free, open-source raster image editor for photographers, digital artists, designers, and other creative users. It provides layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, text, vector tools, and brushes in a native desktop application, with a WebAssembly build that can be hosted separately. Users can make non-destructive edits with adjustment layers and live-preview filters, select subjects and objects on-device, and refine masks locally. The editor opens and saves layered PSD and PSB documents, supports smart objects and smart filters, and includes color-management tools for RGB, CMYK, Lab, and grayscale documents at 8-, 16-, and 32-bit depths. PhotoCraft is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and is distributed as free, open-source software.

About

aukimi is a browser-based creative suite combining tools for graphic design, illustration, image editing, 3D sculpting and modeling, retopology, animation, video, audio, game development, and PDF creation. Its modules support vector and raster artwork, pixel art, 3D materials and rendering, music production, a game engine, and document assembly. Users work in the web app without installing desktop software, with shared projects and assets that move between suite modules. The service offers cloud projects and real-time collaboration, and runs on desktop, tablet, and mobile browsers. A free tier provides access to selected modules and browser utilities, while a Pro plan unlocks all modules. aukimi is intended for designers, illustrators, 3D artists, video creators, audio producers, and game developers creating personal or professional work.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • It had a nice familiar UI. It looks like Photoshop. That's the goal, and they achieved that. It's a good design.
  • What I like most is that it feels familiar immediately. The layout, tools, shortcuts, layers, masks, adjustment layers, and PSD workflow are close enough to traditional professional image editors that there is almost no learning curve. The performance is another big plus. PhotoCraft is written natively in Rust and uses the GPU instead of wrapping everything in Electron, so the whole app feels much more lightweight than I expected.

Cons

  • Everything else. It's barely more useful than MS Paint, and only because it has layers. You're better off with basically any other free raster editor with an actual developer behind it.
  • The main downside is that it is still early alpha. There are still some tools, advanced typography features, generative AI capabilities, and plugin compatibility on the roadmap, so it is not a complete Photoshop replacement yet.
