About

PhotoCraft is a free, open-source raster image editor for photographers, digital artists, designers, and other creative users. It provides layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, text, vector tools, and brushes in a native desktop application, with a WebAssembly build that can be hosted separately. Users can make non-destructive edits with adjustment layers and live-preview filters, select subjects and objects on-device, and refine masks locally. The editor opens and saves layered PSD and PSB documents, supports smart objects and smart filters, and includes color-management tools for RGB, CMYK, Lab, and grayscale documents at 8-, 16-, and 32-bit depths. PhotoCraft is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and is distributed as free, open-source software.

About

RapidRAW is a free, open-source RAW photo editor for photographers who want to organize, develop, and export images on Windows, macOS, Linux, or Android. Its library supports browsing, culling, ratings, flags, tags, albums, and batch operations. A non-destructive editing workflow stores adjustments separately from original files and offers exposure, color, tone-curve, detail, effects, crop, lens-correction, and masking controls. GPU-accelerated processing supports RAW development, while built-in AI tools provide denoising, subject and scene masks, depth maps, and automatic tagging. Users can also connect a self-hosted ComfyUI server for generative editing or link an Immich server to browse a photo library, synchronize edits, and export images. Additional tools include presets, panorama and HDR merging, focus stacking, tethered capture on supported systems, and batch export to common image formats.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • It had a nice familiar UI. It looks like Photoshop. That's the goal, and they achieved that. It's a good design.
  • What I like most is that it feels familiar immediately. The layout, tools, shortcuts, layers, masks, adjustment layers, and PSD workflow are close enough to traditional professional image editors that there is almost no learning curve. The performance is another big plus. PhotoCraft is written natively in Rust and uses the GPU instead of wrapping everything in Electron, so the whole app feels much more lightweight than I expected.

Cons

  • Everything else. It's barely more useful than MS Paint, and only because it has layers. You're better off with basically any other free raster editor with an actual developer behind it.
  • The main downside is that it is still early alpha. There are still some tools, advanced typography features, generative AI capabilities, and plugin compatibility on the roadmap, so it is not a complete Photoshop replacement yet.
