About

PhotoCraft is a free, open-source raster image editor for photographers, digital artists, designers, and other creative users. It provides layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, text, vector tools, and brushes in a native desktop application, with a WebAssembly build that can be hosted separately. Users can make non-destructive edits with adjustment layers and live-preview filters, select subjects and objects on-device, and refine masks locally. The editor opens and saves layered PSD and PSB documents, supports smart objects and smart filters, and includes color-management tools for RGB, CMYK, Lab, and grayscale documents at 8-, 16-, and 32-bit depths. PhotoCraft is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and is distributed as free, open-source software.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • What I like most is that it feels familiar immediately. The layout, tools, shortcuts, layers, masks, adjustment layers, and PSD workflow are close enough to traditional professional image editors that there is almost no learning curve. The performance is another big plus. PhotoCraft is written natively in Rust and uses the GPU instead of wrapping everything in Electron, so the whole app feels much more lightweight than I expected.

Cons

  • The main downside is that it is still early alpha. There are still some tools, advanced typography features, generative AI capabilities, and plugin compatibility on the roadmap, so it is not a complete Photoshop replacement yet.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • Add a layer over image, add text. Done. Experiment with the tools, Google and Youtube are your friends. Don’t be shy. Great product overall.
  • I signed up for the free trial and canceled before the end date. I was still charged and they are not responding to my email requests ~ be careful when dealing with them. Very disappointing when companies can’t be trusted.
  • The priduct is nice, although was not really what I was looking for. I forgot to cancel my subscription but I was immediately refunded when I asked them to do so. Thank you John for making things easy :)
  • This is a truly excellent app only used better on a pc. Having 22 years designing images I’m truly impressed. Needs a few little tweaks but other than that it really is a great software. Consider trying yourself. I must admit to get the best out of the app you need to have a certain level of design experience to get the best out of it. Great for start up designers too with easy lessons.
  • The tools are amazing there are so much of them and they work like crazy good I don't get why anyone would not like them.

Cons

  • Trying to find the Enlight bundle and no luck at the moment.
  • As above ~ very disappointed ~ I have been charged even though I cancelled by the trial end date.
  • I found photo editing good but basic. I really was looking for something that combined text to image with photo editing, which is not what Photoleap does.
  • Needs a few tweaks to be up there with a pc software. For the price it’s fantastic I seriously would have paid double for this & I have access to some serious software. Needs an auto save adding desperately as I spent an hour on one image & hit wrong button & gone truly devastating after spending time on one image. Also needs a power clip option that will add more flexibility. Not a lot of cons to be honest.
  • The directions are nothing cause there is none and I really need help.
