About

Zeek (formerly Bro) is the world’s leading platform for network security monitoring. Flexible, open source, and powered by defenders. Zeek has a long history in the open source and digital security worlds. Vern Paxson began developing the project in the 1990s under the name “Bro” as a means to understand what was happening on his university and national laboratory networks. Vern and the project’s leadership team renamed Bro to Zeek in late 2018 to celebrate its expansion and continued development. Zeek is not an active security device, like a firewall or intrusion prevention system. Rather, Zeek sits on a “sensor,” a hardware, software, virtual, or cloud platform that quietly and unobtrusively observes network traffic. Zeek interprets what it sees and creates compact, high-fidelity transaction logs, file content, and fully customized output, suitable for manual review on disk or in a more analyst-friendly tool like a security and information event management (SIEM) system.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • I have a small MSP service that I offer my clients and have less than 50 devices total. At first, this was a great product and I liked the simplicity of the platform. But on 9/21, they implemented a change in price and no longer offer the most important features for free. No more RMM, no more Patch Management, no more remote access. It all costs $1.25 per endpoint.
  • So, for starters, there is 50 devices that you get at no additional cost. Beyond 50 seats there is a cost per device. Compared to the very few other "free seats" options, this is the best I could find. I like that I can monitor things like event id 7 and 52 logs, push windows build updates (feature updates), and the normal windows updates on a schedule. You can also push updates to common software or packaged .msi files to remote systems. I understand there is some bad blood from past people that said it would be free forever for unlimited devices. From a business point of view, there is nothing to gain by doing this, and the fact they offer 50 free seats is great for a person that is using ~30 devices of that 50. If you honestly manage more than 50 I think it's only fair to pay them for those seats since they are offering a service after all.
  • The first twenty end points you add to the system are technically free. I can’t think of any more pros.

Cons

  • They changed the pricing structure and now they no longer support <50 devices for free. Don't waste your time on this.
  • Linux support is there but lacking without a premium license. Every once in a while a machine will not correctly report online (which may have been fixed with an update). Integration with 3rd party services is a bit lacking.
  • Their online cloud is always crashing. Their support is based out of India and very hard to communicate with.
