About

Carlson Software provides technically advanced mining software for design and efficient operation of mines throughout the world. Its machine control solutions enable companies to reduce idle time and increase production rates, which equal lowered costs and increased efficiency. Carlson Software is the largest provider of mine software for coal mines in the United States and, increasingly, around the globe. Carlson Mining modules run on top of AutoCAD® and come with an IntelliCAD® built-in. Use of Carlson machine control software—Carlson Grade, TruckPro, and Fleet Manager Office—has increased as mine management seeks to increase productivity, accurately track materials, and enhance safety on the site. While predominant in the U.S. coal mining industry, Carlson Mining applications, including Carlson Machine Control, go well beyond coal: to limestone, trona, clay, phosphate and all manner of sedimentary deposits. Routines for block modeling have been added.

About

MineTwin is simulation, planning and decision-support software for open-pit and underground mining operations. It enables mining companies, engineers and consultants to create realistic digital twins of mines, test operational scenarios and evaluate proposed changes before committing equipment, capital or production resources. MineTwin combines discrete-event simulation, scheduling and optimization to model mine layouts, production targets, equipment fleets, haulage networks, material flows, maintenance schedules and operational constraints. Teams can compare scenarios, optimize fleet sizes and equipment allocation, identify bottlenecks, validate production plans and assess new infrastructure or technologies. Interactive 2D and 3D views, dashboards, timelines, graphs and detailed reports make simulation results easy to understand. MineTwin supports common engineering and spreadsheet data formats and exports results to Microsoft Excel.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • The studies functionality is probably the feature I find most useful. It makes analysing and comparing different scenarios much easier. I can save a study and rerun the same experiments when I receive new scenario files, or when I need to update the mine plan based on actual progress. This saves a lot of time and also makes it easier to keep the analysis consistent between different versions of a plan

Cons

  • There is a bit of a steep learning curve when first setting everything up. In particular, it takes some time to get a MineTwin scenario configured so that it can be updated properly using the latest mine plan files from systems such as Deswik or Vulcan. Once the process is understood and the scenario is set up correctly, it becomes much easier to manage.
