Hello list, I believe some of the responses I got re: KisMAC went directly to me rather than to the list so today I'm reporting back with my results. Thanks to everyone who wrote to me with information! The current version of KisMAC available for download publically (via MacUpdate etc) could crash your PowerBook upon putting it to sleep even after you quit the program and WirelessDriver is reloaded, and even after a reboot. I use a Ti400, 10.2.6 and an Orinoco Gold card, and it happened to me. Rob Frohne mentioned a bug fix that takes care of this; it is currently available as a beta-beta-beta via a download link from the KisMAC mailing list. I recommend visiting <http://www.freelists.org/archives/kismac/06-2003> and scrolling down to view the latest messages in chronological order; the file with the fix is called "KisMAC005a2.zip" but I won't provide a direct link in case Mick updates it again (it's been updated twice since Friday, how's that for customer support!). (The mailing list software they use treats the grouping of threads a little strangely; I missed a few messages in Thread view so to save y'all the trouble I recommend the chronological view) I imagine this fix will be rolled into the regular KisMAC beta in the next wee while so if you're not feeling adventurous, just wait for a new update to come up on MacUpdate or VersionTracker or whatever. KisMAC *does* work beautifully; it found lots of available wireless networks that reach my apartment and it has really nice graphs of signal strength, etc. It will be a terrific program for all of us once all these kinks are ironed out between it and the WirelessDriver! On that note, when will we get a new update to the WirelessDriver itself? ;) regards, brian @joannou.net |

> A few months ago someone on the list mentioned trying out KisMac using > an Orinoco PCMCIA card. I never saw a final report about whether or > not it worked. Presently it works. However, the driver for the Orinoco ("WirelessDriver") does not "kextunload" properly, requiring a reboot if you actually want to _use_ the interface afterwards. This is a major PITA. You'll need a new version of KisMAC. Alex |

Running 10.26 on a Powerbook G3 Lombard. I'm about to purchase a Netgear WG511 PC Card and am just checking to see if it works with the wireless driver. I see it works with Intersil Prisim chips and this being a Prisim GT chipset I was hoping it would work. I'm not worried about 802.11g access - 802.11b would be fine but want thew WG511 to give me g speeds on a PC laptop. I am a complete novice to wireless so would appreciate any assistance. See comments here re: KisMAC, some of which directly bear on Orinoco experiences. (And it's good news.) http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/mac/17199 For me, after many earlier failures the current KisMAC version 0.05a works just swell with my Prism2 card. KisMAC now notices our favorite WirelessDriver is present and automatically swaps it out and then back in again upon quitting. So, like, enjoy! Hi folks, A few months ago someone on the list mentioned trying out KisMac using an Orinoco PCMCIA card. I never saw a final report about whether or not it worked. Has anyone tried since then? Does it actually work? Does it require uninstalling the WirelessDriver? I'm a little afraid of mucking with my WirelessDriver configuration since it has been working perfectly for me and I'm a bit scared of the "en1 voodoo" that so many peope have run into. Hi... I've got a Wallstreet PB running OS X 10.2 and got a chance to try out your driver (WirelessDriverBeta5_1) yesterday with two cards: a LinkSys WPC-11 and a D-Link 650+. My access point is a D-Link 614+ router/wireless AP. I can confirm that the LinkSys works fine but only without WEP, and that the D-Link card doesn't work at all. I'm really hoping that WEP support on one or both of these cards can come soon... are there newer versions of the driver to test? Ian |

This is my first time posting, so if I make a mistake, please feel free to let me know. I recently bought a Proxim Wireless Networks Gold ORiNOCO 11 a/b/g ComboCard. My plan was to install this card on my PowerBook G3 wallstreet. After inserting the card into the computer, the screen gets dim and a window/warning pops up and tells me to hold the restart or power off the system and restart all in 4 different languages. My IP is on the bottom right and I believe my MAC numbers are on the left. Everything is frozen after I see this sign. I found this web site and installed the program with the same results. Here is some of the things I have done with my PowerBook G3. -Memory: 512mb 133mhz -Sonnet Tech: 500mhz G4 upgrade -Toshiba 40mb Hard Drive Can anyone email me with any information that might be useful? I'm installing 1.0.0b5 for the first time on my TiBook, but I don't get an (eth1) or 2 etc, in my Networking Prefs Pane. I read somewhere to try installing the 3 packages separately, but 2 of the installers gave me problems. The prefPane installers wouldn't install where it wanted to (said I didn't have privs), but it looked like the master installer already installed it there, so I figure that's fine. But then when I go to install WirelessDriver.pkg, it says "You cannot install this software on this disk. (null), with a red stop sign/exclamation point on my boot drive. For hardware I'm using a 1st gen TiBook and an Enterasys 802.11b card. I'm on 10.2.6. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Dan Pouliot |

Will it be able to support locating... like airport does on the menubar when you find a network to connect to? Hi just a note to whomever is concerned, I have had success installing the wireless driver on a Powerbook G3 333mhz (Bronze Keyboard / Lombard) and a LinkSys WPC-11 (version 3). It required an additional reboot to finally recognize en1, but that was the only hitch. I'm having trouble with the WirelessDriver Beta 5-1 package on OS X 10.2.6. I installed the package some time ago, and never got it to work, so I tried again this week. It still didnt seem to work, so I ran the un-installer script, and then tried to re-install. however, now when I try to re-install, the installer starts, and it prepares to install, then it says "There were errors, it cannot be installed." I'm a little baffled. Can someone give me a tip? Works fine with 10.2.6 here too, as it has for me on every X flavor since the 10.0.4. version of the driver. Hi there, Do you guys know if I can hook-up the Kobishi USB adapter to my "sexy" iMac (15" TFT)? I bought it with the garantee that I could return the wireless set if I cannot get it to work. The access point is connected directly to my desktop (running XP) and the iMac plus a Wintel notebook need to connect wirelessly to it. Thanks for the time! I have a cabletron card in my pismo and installed the beta 5 release of the driver. I use a bridge from my wireless network to my wired network. My wired network has a linux based DHCP server on it and gives an address to the cabletron card with DHCP, however when I change to a PPPOE connect I get a message that no PPPOE server can be found. The built in ethernet card works fine, and using the same card on a winblows based laptop find the PPPOE server. Any suggestions for getting PPPOE to work ? katey |

Rob can answer for his new driver, but the current one will not, last I checked. The airport slot in desktop and laptop Macs is not a real PCMCIA slot. It's a piece of the IDE bus hooked up to a PCMCIA connector. It is possible for third parties to support it (for example, the final Orinoco driver for MacOS 9 did, as did a driver for LinuxPPC), but it's a little trickier than supporting a slot in a real PCMCIA controller, or even a fake one like those provided by PLX9052 based PCI wireless card adapters. > 3) A previous post mentioned that I might be able to get my > PCI->PCMCIA bridge 'working' in some fashion if I enabled 'dubbing' in > the driver when recompling. The UNIX level recognizes them, but the IOKit layer does not, so there would be at least a little kernel recompiling necessary to support them. > 4) If you have any suggestions for gettin a Senao Ext2 working in a > gigabit g4 'airport ready' machine, I would love to hear them. I was still getting useful service from the Beta 5.1 through 10.2.5. But with 10.2.6 I can no longer get a signal from an Airport Base Station even a few feet away. It comes in fine in OS 9.22 with the Farallon Skyline extension, alas. I'm running OS X 10.2.6 on G3 Lombard/Bronze Keys PowerBook 400 MHz/500 megs RAM, 30 gig HD. There are still quite a few G3PB users in my acquaintance (Southern California/Southern Nevada); I'm active in VMUG (director) and SGV MUG (past director, newsletter editor). We'd be up for a reasonable Shareware price for the driver if that helps getting it going. I last got to use this driver successfully at PenguiCon, the first Linux/science-fiction convention, in Warren, Michigan, May 2-4; I had lots of envious Mac Users checking my Power Book out there, and more than a few admiring Linux geeks. 1) The Airport cards are modified version of the Lucent WaveLAN OEM card. They are modified so that they won't work in a PCCard slot and thus aren't able to be used in PCs. The WaveLAN chipset is identical to the PRISM2 chipset from Intersil except that it runs different firmware and may have different components supporting it. 1.) No idea. The command set is mostly compatible. I don't know how sensitive their driver is to the differences. 2) Probably not without some modifications. I suspect you could get it to work, but you'd have to modify the driver and then remove Apple's Airport card driver as it will try to match as well (or make the matching number higher so ours matches first) 3) 'dub' is not the words I used or would have used. The IOPCCardFamily driver package from Apple has specific constants in it for matching the various PowerBook motherboards and their PCCard adapter chips and to position the memory windows accordingly. You will have to figure out an appropriate window to use and to add another machine target (not the official terminology, I'm sure, but it kinda fits) with that window information... If you recompile IOPCCardFamily in debug mode, it includes another matching for debugging that might work, but I haven't tried it. Many reports have it that if you put a silver card into the Airport slot, Apple's drivers will convert it to a gold card by upgrading the firmware. I can't confirm this happens at all times, but it might help sway your decision. -Rob On Friday, May 30, 2003, at 10:42 Canada/Pacific, Eric Lundberg wrote: > Well with more futzing around I have produced more questions that me > tooling around on the internet didn't help me answer. > > So since the PCI->PCMCIA bridge I was borrowing wasn't recognized, I > needed some other options. Well with more futzing around I have produced more questions that me tooling around on the internet didn't help me answer. So since the PCI->PCMCIA bridge I was borrowing wasn't recognized, I needed some other options. I thought "Hmm presumbably the 'Airport Ready' nature of the motherboard means their must be pci-pcmcia bridge chip on the motherboard that is recognized, maybe I can find that and go by a bridge that uses it." so I went looking around. Didn't find the chip, but I did notice that I could just stick the rebadged silver card I had into the airport connector. Which is probably only possible since my computer is raw parts in a rubbermaid container (I.e., I have lots of space, no special 90 degree connectors required) After a quick reboot my mac thought it had an Airport card in it. The little airport menu thing worked, I could join my local network, macstumber worked, etc. Certainly much better signal strength and range than the crappy USB Belkin I was using. So, the trick is this: I don't want to use the silver card I have now, I want to use a Senao 200mw Ext2 card so that I can get enough power to get to my buddies signal (and net connection) at his place. Which leads to the question of "If I plug in the Senao will the os just pretend it is an airport and let me use it." Which I imagine is entirely up to the chipset and if it is the same type of chipset that is in the airport. Since I couldn't figure that out (no net connection at home), I thought I would try and see if I could get the silver working with the WirelessDriver (since I know it supports the Senao and the silver and if I can get it working on one, then it should be fine for the other) I moved the airport drivers out of the way and put the WirelessDriver in and rebooted. No love. No messages in the dmesg output, the troubleshooting script seems to think things are ok, except that the wireless card section is just blank. For kicks I gave the IOExperts driver a try, and same thing, it just doesn't think I have a card inserted. 1) What chipset is the airport client card? 1a) Does anyone know if the airport driver will run the Senao card? 2) Will the wireless driver work with cards in the airport slot on G4 airport ready machines? 3) A previous post mentioned that I might be able to get my PCI->PCMCIA bridge 'working' in some fashion if I enabled 'dubbing' in the driver when recompling. I didn't find the word 'dub' in any project or framework file, so if someone could elaborate that would be great. 4) If you have any suggestions for gettin a Senao Ext2 working in a gigabit g4 'airport ready' machine, I would love to hear them. I would like to get all this working over the weekend. Thanks. -eric |
