Apple's new iChat AV, video part, requires broadband and 600MHz Power Book. Would my PB Ti 500 work with SourceForge Wireless driver, Proxim Skyline PC Card and iSight camera software so that I can use it as video phone or teleconferencing tool wirelessly? Milan |

Did you ever try upgrading your original Airport with a firmware from another base station? Take for example the AP-500. http://www.personaltelco.net/index.cgi/ApFirmwareSwapping is a webpage for this.... Also, there's a place to repair faulty capacitors in original Airport stations... Forget where that website is but just search for it... I've got a Proxim (Agere/Avaya/Lucent/WhateverLatestName) 802.11b AP-200 and love it.... Also, isn't the Airport Extreme 802.11g? Save yourself some money and get an 11b access point. I have an Orinoco Gold card in my G3 Powerbook, and have a DLink 612+ access point, everything is working perfectly, including 128-bit WEP and MAC filtering. Hi all, I'm trying to get a WaveLan Silver card to work in a Ti G4/500 powerbook running 10.2.6. The install went smoothly and I can see a card in the networking prefs panel as en3. When I go to the Wireless Config panel I can't enter any text in the "Connect to wireless network named:" field. I suspect the problem is the card is getting assigned en3 instead of en1 or en2 like the documentation refers to. I do have an apple airport card installed and working but I would like to get better range. I'm not sure why en2 is skipped. If this is the problem is there a way to reassign the interface numbers on OSX? Or maybe a simple config change and recompile? Here is my output from ifconfig: lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 16384 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000 gif0: flags=8010<POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST> mtu 1280 stf0: flags=0<> mtu 1280 en3: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet6 fe80::203:93ff:fef9:bfb4%en3 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x4 ether 00:03:93:f9:bf:b4 en1: flags=8822<BROADCAST,SMART,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 tunnel inet --> ether 00:30:65:1a:56:67 media: autoselect (<unknown type>) status: inactive supported media: autoselect en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet6 fe80::230:65ff:fef9:bfb4%en0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x6 inet 207.149.221.205 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 207.149.221.255 ether 00:30:65:f9:bf:b4 media: autoselect (100baseTX <full-duplex>) status: active supported media: none autoselect 10baseT/UTP <half-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <half-duplex,hw-loopback> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 100baseTX <half-duplex> 100baseTX <half-duplex,hw-loopback> 100baseTX <full-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex,hw-loopback> TIA, -Dom |

It doesn't appear to be the TI that SMC and DLink use in other products. Needless to say, there's no Mac driver. The SMC 2632W v.2 is PCMCIA with Atmel 76C502a rev C/RFMD chipset. It works with my driver port at http://www.russotto.net/~russotto/atmelx.html The SMC 2632W (no revision) is PCMCIA with one of the PRISM chipsets, and works with the driver that is the subject of this list. |

Hello! I'm simply wondering whether or not I can use an Orinoco USB adapter with this driver. I can't test it myself until I buy an externally powered USB hub, since my B&W G3 says it draws too much power. I thought one of you guys probably already know. If I can't, will it be supported in later revisions, and if so when will that be? Thanks beforehand! Andreas Holmberg |

I've got a SAMSUNG MagicLAN card which uses the PRISM chipset (I think it's actually Prism II but I'm not positive) I haven't been able to get the current version of the Wireless driver to work with the little tinkering I'm able to do. I did add the IOName card ID as mentioned in the FAQ but with no luck. The core problem seems to be that I am unable to activate the en1 Network port. Hrumph. I'm also unable to download the script which grabs all the necessary information, it seems to be missing. I've copied the following from terminal, and other information is that I'm using a Wallstreet 300 with 320MB. When I put the card in the machine the little PCCard icon shows in the menu bar and knows it's a SAMSUNG 11Mbps WLAN Card and is able to eject the card. I tried to send this earlier so will try again. Is there a firmware update to this 3.1 Airport update? I am using a WallStreet PB with an Orinoco Card and a Snow base station. I am using the third party driver from SourceForge.net. I updated the PB software to 3.1 okay but there seems to nothing to update the base station with. The latest firmware I have is 4.0.8. General question to anyone that can help. I upgraded my Airport software to 3.1. I am using third party software to be able to use my Orinoco Card with a Snow Airport base station. Am I suppose to be able to update the firmware along with the 3.1 update? This is not an airport extreme base station but the instructions given by Apple indicated that if I select configure then it will ask me if I want to update the base station. Mine does not do that although I did successfully update the software on the PowerBook. Is there a configuration file I am suppose to select? Thanks, Byron |

I have an Apple Powerbook G3 (bronze keyboard - 333MHz, 320MB memory), OS X 10.2.6, an Airport Dual Ethernet base station, a Proxim Orinoco Gold wireless PC Card, and have downloaded and installed your WirelessDriverBeta5_1.1.dmg driver. I followed your installation instructions closely, successfully installing the software. After rebooting, I opened System Preferences, clicked on the Network panel and set it up as illustrated in your instructions (showing en1, configuring manually and entering the IP address of my cable modem ISP), opened WirelessConfig and completed it by entering the name of our wireless network (which is successfully being used by other computers in our house - both wired and with Airport cards), selecting 128-bit WEP encryption (first entering our actual text password, clicking Apply Now and then having it converted to hex code). I have repeatedly tried to get the PC Card to recognize the base station using the Airport Admin Utility, but with no success. It simply doesn't recognize it, no matter what I've done over the last several (I couldn't admit how many) hours! Please advise when you can. Thank you. John Leaird |

I'm glad to hear that there hasn't been any infringement of licensing here or elsewhere. I apologize for my incorrect assumption that there could have been a common ancestor. I likely am not the only one who may have been wondering, hence my asking for a some clarification for all. The license that the WirelessDriver project is currently under does allow for closed source and/or commercial variants, as long as credit is given, but we have noticed some abuse of this in the past from others. I do think that both freeware/open source and commercial solutions can both exist here as they often (as is the case here) offer different levels of both features and support and end users vary both in their technical abilities and desire. I think I can speak for a lot of us here that the input that has been given has been useful and that your choice of when and how to recommend your products has been appropriate and welcome further input, support and comments from you and your staff when you feel it appropriate. My previous post was made mostly in an effort to help ensure that things remain helpful and clear to all involved. -Rob McKeever ro...@ma... I just want to make sure that this is clear to everyone on this list: 1) The WirelessDriver project is not connected, in any way, to IOXperts. 2) IOXperts or it's employees have not contributed any code to this project to this point. 3) The IOXperts driver is a commercial product and is independently supported by IOXperts and not by the WirelessDriver project or it's members. I don't have any objection to Dave or Amanda pointing out that their product exists and may be a valid alternative for some people. I would prefer, though, that these posts make it clear that theirs is a commercial product, the post is an advertisement and is independent of this project. I would expect anyone else choosing to advertise a product via this list to be held to these same standards. Perhaps Dave or Amanda can comment on the distinct similarities between our open sourced WirelessDriver, licensed under a slightly modified version of the BSD license, and their own product. I get the impression that the IOXperts driver could likely be a derivative work and, if so, is in violation of the licensing terms as it does not give credit to the WirelessDriver project and/or it's developers, past and present. If it is, I would like this corrected and a public apology issued. If it isn't, I think we can all happily co-exist and perhaps further each others objectives. -Rob McKeever ro...@ma...
