Hi, That message is just a suggestion that you add the line /bin/false to the /etc/shells file. It may not be necessary depending on how your FTP server is configured, but is generally a good idea .. - Jamie On Thu, 2005-09-22 at 13:12, da...@so... wrote: > Hi, > Great work Jamie. That is quite strange: Ubuntu (and Debian, which it is extremely close
to) both supply the package 'libauthen-pam-perl', which provides this
Perl module.
If you couldn't get that package to install, I would strongly suggest
that there is something rather wrong with your system at the moment.

It may be that Ubuntu still offers an option somewhere to turn off
shadow passwords; Debian does in the current release versions. You
have to /work/ to make it happen, and it sure isn't recommended.

As far as I know, Ubuntu does use shadow by default. In any case, from
the next release on they *will* be using shadow, since Debian/unstable
just turned off any support for non-shadow systems.
Personally, I suspect the original poster has a very oddly configured
box, as the inability to install an OS supplied package indicates.
My Ubuntu test machine tells me that shadow is the right answer, by the
way. It is the preview of the next release, but there hasn't been
/that/ much change from 5.04, which also used shadow by default.
Regards,
Daniel

Hi Adam, That sounds like a pretty cool idea... I'm thinking that it may make more sense as part of the existing System and Server Status module, which currently just displays if various services are up or down. However, it could be enhanced to display additional information as you suggested, such as the system load, connected users, etc.. What do you think? - Jamie On Thu, 2005-09-22 at 02:06, Adam Kennedy wrote: > So I had this idea today. I had almost torn out all my hair trying to get webmin running on Ubuntu 5.04 "The Hoary Hedgehog". I found that none of the instructions on the web worked, nor any of the email archives. I installed Ubuntu 5.04 "The Hoary Hedgehog" as a server only with minimal system. It is a real trip to work with an OS that does not allow login by root and you must do everything by sudo. Fixed that real quick: sudo passwd root Set the password and now you can login as root logged in as root mkdir /usr/local/src/webmin cd /usr/local/src/webmin wget http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/webadmin/webmin-1.230.tar.gz gunzip webmin-1.230.tar.gz tar xf webmin-1.230.tar cd webmin-1.230 ./setup.sh /usr/local/webmin accepted all defaults BUT webmin would not run cd /var/webmin nano miniserv.error [21/Sep/2005:16:17:25 -0700] miniserv.pl started [21/Sep/2005:16:17:25 -0700] Perl module Authen::PAM needed for PAM is not inst$ BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at (eval 2) line 1. OK, the Authen:PAM would not install for me. So, I edited /etc/miniserv.conf with nano (an editor that comes with ubuntu) changed the passwd_file=/etc/shadow to passwd_file=/etc/passwd wrote the file and exited nano then performed /etc/webmin/start and VOILE --- it works I hope this helps someone. I love Webmin and I get very frustrated when an Operating System does not like it to install and run properly. Jaime --- Thanks for a great program! Why? Ubuntu?? I am following instructions to install XEN and the instructions call for Ubuntu. Bob |

Does anyone thing that having a Webmin Wiki would be useful and/or another neat idea? I am Paul Cubbage, Evangelist for Open Country (OC), the company sponsoring Webmin. I will be putting up a survey shorty, linkable from within Webmin, to get input on what people want added to/changed in Webmin. The final decision(s) on mods will be Jamie's but he does implement features that the community is willing to fund. That being said, OC will give serious consideration to funding anything with strong support from within the Webmin community. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 So I had this idea today. I know it would make my life easier. A new webmin module named "Summary" or "Server Summary". This module would display a simple status from all modules in webmin. It could call a function from each webmin module, much like the function when adding a system user. That function would return some status info for that modules block. It would be up to each module's configuration page as to what would be displayed in this "summary module". For example. The module would start out with a section (each section is either in a table cell which would be made pretty, or seperated by an <hr>) that listed the status of webmin (perhaps how many users are logged in, port it's using, ssl enabled, etc.). Then let's say the next section would be from a module, say samba for example, and could list samba's daemon statuses, then the next could be DansGuardian and list it's status, filter levels etc, then Apache could list up/down and performance stuff. I think it would be an awesome thing to use with the "go directly to this module upon login" feature. A person could login to webmin and see a quick status of the server, then optionally click on the section's title to go directly to that module to change something. Ideas? Thoughts? This would obviously require an API change for the new function, but I think it would be an awesome thing to have. - -- Northern Indiana ESC Adam Kennedy - ake...@ni... Hi everyone, Webmin version 1.230 is now available for download from http://www.webmin.com/ and mirror sites. This release includes the following changes : - Fixed a security hole that allows a remote attack if the 'Support full PAM conversations?' option is enabled in the Webmin Configuration module. Thanks to JPCERT for finding this bug. - Worked around a problem that could cause the loss of the /etc/webmin directory when upgrading from a Webmin RPM from another vendor. - Added basic support for installing on Windows systems, using the new setup.pl script. This should be considered alpha-quality code at the moment. - The Backup Configuration Files module can now backup the Webmin config file associated with a module, and a list of other arbitary files. - The Cron module allows a start and end date to be specified for jobs. - Added support for SQL queries and updates to the Custom Commands module. - The Protected Web Directories module now support digest format password files, which are more secure. - The MySQL and PostgreSQL modules support deleting multiple databases, tables, users, groups and permissions at once. They also handle large numbers of tables and databases better by displaying a search form instead of a huge list or table of icons. - Added cross-monitor dependencies and support for deleting multiple monitors at once to the System and Server Status module. Because of the security hole in older versions of Webmin, I would recommend upgrading to 1.230. Fortunately the vulnerable option is not enabled by default and is rarely used, but you can't be too careful .. Also available is Usermin 1.160, which includes the following changes : - Fixed the same security hole as in Webmin. - The Cron module allows a start and end date to be specified for jobs. - Added a simpler interface to the Mail Forwarding and Replies module, for setting up one or more of normal delivery, auto-responding and forwarding. - The MySQL and PostgreSQL modules allow multiple tables to be deleted at once, and display search forms when a database has too many tables. - The Upload and Download module can now be used to fetch a file from the server running Usermin to the PC on which your browser runs. As always, please send me any bug reports or feature suggestions that you might have. - Jamie |

Hi Mark, To get records like this, you could enter into a template file something like : @ IN NS ns1.mydomain.com. @ IN NS ns2.mydomain.com. @ IN NS ns3.mydomain.com. @ IN MX 30 mail @ IN MX 50 mx2.mydomain.com. @ IN MX 80 mx3.mydomain.com. @ IN A 1.2.3.4 www IN A 1.2.3.4 mail IN A 1.2.3.5 ftp IN A 1.2.3.6 The @ means the current domain name .. - Jamie On Wed, 2005-09-21 at 21:31, Obantec Support wrote: > Hi Jamie > > Bind Module. Hi Jamie Bind Module. (never got into Virtualmin as the layout of cgi-bin etc differs to my defaults. (guess i like manual config). what i have is domain.com IN NS ns1.mydomain.com domain.com IN NS ns2.mydomain.com domain.com IN NS ns2.mydomain.com domain.com IN MX 30 mail.domain.com domain.com IN MX 50 mx2.mydomain.com domain.com IN MX 80 mx3.mydomain.com domain.com IN A 1.2.3.4 www.domain.com IN A 1.2.3.4 mail.domain.com IN A 1.2.3.5 (note diff IP) ftp.domain.com IN A 1.2.3.6 (as above). Does 1.225 (which refers to template file) have a way to do the above? my primary nameserver is not on the same server as users & apache so vitrualmin seems OTT. Hi Enrique,
If you are finding it slow to fetch the status from a large number of servers for display on a web page, one alternative would be to set up a Cron job to do this on a regular schedule (like every 5 minutes), and store the results in a file for a CGI to read.
At the moment, the time a monitor went down is not recorded .. however, since that is useful information I may capture it in future..

Yes, I've done that before, but with less hosts; with a lot of hosts
the load of the webpage would be slower (with my very bad servers).
What I'm doing now is, using the onup and ondown commands and a script
that runs ssh, write the remote master host file on every up and down
of the monitors of every host. I was only wondering if there could be
a better way to do it .
Thanks for your help.
With this I'm trying to resolve, besides the concentration of many
hosts, something I miss in the status module: in the webpage we know
that a monitor is down, but no how much time it has been down, the
only way to know the time the monitors went down is reading the
emails.

Hi Dirk, One thing you will definately need is to setup /etc/pam.d/webmin to use pam_ldap.so . Typically this also requires that a file like /etc/pam.d/pam_ldap.conf be set up to talk to your LDAP server.. although that file may be in a different location depending on your Linux distribution. - Jamie -----Original Message----- From: <Dir...@fu...> Subj: [webmin-l] Configure Webmin with PAM Authentication Date: Tue 20 Sep 2005 6:32 pm Size: 1K To: <web...@li...> Hello list, i want to configure webmin to authenticate users against an ldap server. Hi Enrique,
Perhaps one solution would be to have a master system periodically fetch the oldstatus file and monitor files from each of the other servers, and then analyse those files? You could fetch the files with SSH, or using Webmin's built-in RPC capability for calling functions on other servers.

By the way, could it be possible to have the date internazionalizated
in the status module (in the emails and in the last scheduled status)?
Thanks

I have noted that within Webmin, read user mail is not an option as there is no way within Webmin (as Jamie has confirmed) to get an IMAP login and directly accessing the mail store on cyrus-imapd would seem to everyone to be one of those Really Bad Ideas. I can live with that too since I have found a good deal of interest in other 'robust' web mail setups anyway. I don't even mean to extoll the virtues of cyrus-imapd or decry some missing features in dovecot as I have endured the mbox setup of uw-imap with some of my clients and I now know nothing is worse than that. My thinking has been all along - and I've said this before so I don't wish to belabor the point - but cyrus-imapd has a rather robust perl interface - none of which is used by Webmin. Webmin uses a rather antiquated perl module Net::LDAP (NetxAP) which evidently is supported only by SuSE. It's certainly possible to get the important part of cyrus-imapd by ignoring the cyrus-imapd stuff within LDAP Users and Groups, installing the autocreate patches in cyrus-imapd and some shell scripting using the hooks in LDAP Users and Groups 'scripts to run when modifying/creating' and the very usable 3rd party module Christian Schneider and Johannes Walch called IMAP Admin (I just noticed a new one) Thus I can get what I need - it's just not pretty.
