Hi Enrique,
If you are using the cluster feature of the status module to monitor all
the systems from a single webmin server, then the information about
which monitors are up and down is already available on that master
server. It can be found in the file /etc/webmin/status/oldstatus , which
is a text file in which each line is in the format :
id=status
The 'id' is the ID of a monitor, and status is the result from the last
check. 0 = down, 1 = up, other numbers indicate other types of failures.
You can read that file easily in a webmin module with the read_file
funcion, which converts it into a hash.
The actual details of each monitored services are in files in the
/etc/webmin/status/services directory. You can either read those
directory, or make foreign calls from your module to the status module
to read them, with code like :
&foreign_require("status", "status-lib.pl");
$serv = &status::get_service($id):

I have no > test data comparing dovecot performance to cyrus so I let your 5% > performance claim go since I have no way of proving or disproving and I > suspect that your 5% claim was just simply a uswag. Hold up...I said the performance difference for the whole system, including SpamAssassin and ClamAV, would only be about 5% faster with Cyrus, if any. I didn't say that Cyrus by itself was only 5% faster than Dovecot by itself for any particular task (though it might not even be as fast...I don't know...I've never seen benchmarks of Dovecot vs. Cyrus, though I've seen both compared to all of the "slow" POP and IMAP servers). What I said was that Cyrus can't make SpamAssassin or ClamAV take less resources, and in any mail server running those services, they are where almost /all/ resources go. I'm sure that Cyrus is extremely fast and wonderful in every possible way and I have no inclination to criticize it (though I do readily admit why I wouldn't choose it). I'm just saying that no amount of microtuning of the delivery agent or the retrieval server is going to make the real resource hogs disappear. Dovecot is blazing fast, and I'm sure Cyrus is too (possibly more blazing fast even), but on my mail servers, when I look at CPU/memory usage Dovecot isn't even a blip on the radar, while anti-spam and AV are at the top of the list. Nobody is criticizing your religious beliefs, Craig. Certainly not me. I respect all faiths, from Emacs to Vim and everything in between. ;-) > Likewise using cyrus-imapd, sieve scripts are all previously bytecoded > (compiled) for faster performance rather than shell execution of > procmail. Perhaps Joe wants to toss another 5% figure at that too. Nope. I just want to toss in another reminder that it just doesn't matter. Procmail is 1% of my CPU usage on my most heavily loaded mail server and Dovecot is about the same. SpamAssassin is 30% and ClamAV is probably 10%. When I look at those numbers I couldn't care less whether Procmail is being inefficient because a shell is spawned for every message. Even if Cyrus and Sieve are 5 times faster, I'll still only save .8% CPU time over Procmail. I'm just not gonna sweat over some pocket change. ;-) I'll concede that lack of caching and good indexing in some POP/IMAP servers can lead to sluggish client-side response...but Dovecot is not one of those servers. uw doesn't take much CPU or memory, but is very slow on large mailboxes. Dovecot is very fast and still doesn't take much CPU or memory. And you get to keep standard Maildir or mbox spools, so all mail tools will continue to work as they always have. I consider that a win. The lack of which is why Cyrus is a "drink the Kool-aid" kind of product. You've gotta migrate your whole tool-chain in order to use Cyrus. > While you probably can use UserMin to access maildir stores, you aren't > going to benefit from subscription lists, seen state or imap flags > without an IMAP login and if you had an IMAP login, then cyrus-imapd > would work as well...but an IMAP login isn't part of the feature set of > UserMin. But it is. I mentioned that when this came up a few days ago. Usermin supports the following folder types: - System folders like Inbox, Drafts and Sent Mail that always exist. - Folders in in the mail directory that can be created or deleted by Usermin. - Other files or directories that can be managed as folders by Usermin. - POP3 accounts on other servers that can be treated as folders. - IMAP accounts on other servers. - Composite folders, which combine two or more other folders into a single list. - Virtual folders, which contain a selection of mail from others. Note that one of those is IMAP, and thought it doesn't state it explicitly, local Maildir folders are also supported. It doesn't handle the .subscriptions file yet, as far as I know, but there's no reason why it couldn't. Seems like it would actually be pretty easy to implement... I'm sure Cyrus is a very fine package. I'm not just going to be using it, unless I find that Dovecot is inadequate (and I also find that Cyrus is adequate for the situation that proved Dovecots downfall). ;-) Regards, Joe |

Here is a link that will help you with that. http://www.swelltech.com/support/virtual-servers/index.html#quotas Quotas Setup Quotas on Linux are tricky, not because they are difficult to setup, but because they are so poorly documented, and what documentation exists is = more often than not incorrect to the point of not working. If you are using a relatively recent Linux version, the following instructions should work without difficulty. Guidelines for Quotas Virtualmin uses standard system disk quotas to limit user disk usage. Because of this, all user data must reside on the same disk partition so that the system can maintain an accurate accounting of disk use. The = /home partition is an excellent choice for the user data directory, due to = UNIX tradition and user expectations. This is why we moved the mail spool to = a directory on the /home partition in the mail server sections, so that = all mail will reside on the same partition. Editing fstab The first step to enabling quotas is to turn them on in the /etc/fstab configuration file. You can do this in Webmin by browsing to the = System:Disk and Network Filesystems module. Then click on the /home partition link. Finally, locate the Use Quotas? option and select User and Group from = the dropdown list. Save your changes. You can also make this change manually, by editing the /etc/fstab in = your favorite editor, and modifying the /home mount point entry to look = something like this: /dev/hda2 /home ext3 defaults,usrquota,grpquota 1 1 The important bit of the above example is the addition of the usrquota = and grpquota directives. These two items enable both user and group quotas. After adding quota support to your fstab, you'll need to remount the filesystem, or reboot the system, to make the changes take effect. ------------------------------------------ Vernon J. Perhaps Joe wants to toss another 5% figure at that too. While you probably can use UserMin to access maildir stores, you aren't going to benefit from subscription lists, seen state or imap flags without an IMAP login and if you had an IMAP login, then cyrus-imapd would work as well...but an IMAP login isn't part of the feature set of UserMin. Yes. Dovecot is not a "drink the Kool-aid" kind of server, the way Cyrus is. You don't have to use an alternate mail spool format, no outside databases are used, and nothing complicated goes on in a Dovecot environment. I use Dovecot with Maildir spools on all of my servers, and Usermin works very well. Adam Kennedy wrote: > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- > Hash: SHA1 > > What about dovecot as an IMAP daemon? Hi Jamie and the rest of the list: I need some advice in a module I'm developing, so I think you'll be so kind to help me. I have many hosts (more than 200) monitorized with the status module of webmin. Now, I want to show the status of all the computers in one master host, showing them in a map, and giving them a color in function of his actual status, with a new module. I think this can be done with the module reading a local file than contents the status of all the hosts that have alarms. But, what do you think it's the best way to put the status of all the hosts in one file of the master host? I'm using the onup and ondown commands, but I think it's not the best way. Thanks |

Okay I had to do some updating on my site (FAQ) and on the script to handle some issues but here it is SSH Brute Force Black List v1.9 Please take note this is not a plug in to Webmin or Virtualmin this is strictly a Perl script that will help you against brute force attacks under ssh. You can modify it to work as an FTP Brute Force Black List. If you are unable to make that modification then I can make a separate mod for that purpose just post it on the forums and I will get around to it. Unfortunately, you didn't exactly do anything wrong - rather you, ran into a possible mis-feature of webmin that causes config files to be removed when un-installing. For most modules this doesn't matter much, but for virtualmin it is annoying because it has quite a lot of it's own configuration data. If you have a backup of the /etc/webmin directory, you could just restore /etc/webmin/virtual-server to get back all your sites. Ideally the built-in virtualmin backup feature would be able to restore from this kind of problem, but it cannot at the moment .. although I will certainly fix that in future. The easier solution to the problem of a restart failing is to use the Bootup and Shutdown module to create a new action called 'webmin' that runs /etc/webmin/start at boot time. - Jamie |

I recently recovered from a server hack. They got in through a SimpleBlog hack that a user had uploaded onto their directory [Web hosting obviously]. The Hacker [they were talked to via IM] took over the box and was very... strange... he kept the box running for about 4 days and then one night 'rm -fr /' the whole box. We figure he was waiting for us to offer a dollar amount to fix... perhaps so we couldn't get him for extortion? The box took over 24 hours to recover and wasn't fun. Personally if I was "you" I'd make sure the firewall is configured and also consider if you can not set the "allow connections only from" certain IP's to SSH etc, (due to a dynamic ip address) set up some MAX connection situation to block connections when they are getting dictionary hacked. Now another method is door knocking to open the SSH port, but quiet honest this appears to be quiet above your current skill level. BTW: You can "turn off" SSH in Webmin, and only turn it on when you need to. Personally most people do it the other way around... but hey ;) David Coley Codecipher -----Original Message----- From: web...@li... [mailto:web...@li...] On Behalf Of pr...@pr...
