You can still use smp under a single processor. At times it can help manage the load of the server. ------------------------------------------ Vernon J. Seems this is happening on several particular systems lately. The smp of course stands for multi-processor. Set grub (or lilo if you're using that) to boot from the Fedora Core (2.6.12-1.1378_FC3) kernel. Then, under software packages, search for kernel and remove any kernels with the smp. I don't know exactly why this is happening. File a bug report on the Fedora site. Things are getting more complicated in the Linux world. Seems there is a move to support just about everything that comes along and that's not an easy undertaking. At the same time, older hardware 'work-arounds' seem to be getting dumped from things like Anaconda. I think we've been from the almost nothing is supported era of the early 90s, to the almost anything works era of the 00s and are moving into the time when moving forward is also moving backwards with regards to hardware. In grub, under kernel options, try ro root=LABEL=/ apm=off noapic rhgb quiet That fixed it for me on kernel 2.6.9-22.ELsmp running CentOS 4.2. There's lots of flags available for boot up options. Mine died much earlier in the boot.. just after expanding kernel or some such. If you do think it is traffic, you could unplug the network cable to see if it is external. Good luck! John Hinton |

I am having troubles rebooting my system. Can anyone tell me what the dif= ference is between:=A0 * Core (2.6.12-1.1378_FC3smp) and=20 * Fedora Core (2.6.12-1.1378_FC3) When I reboot my system and I try to go into any of the kernals that have= smp on them I can never get back up. It seems that when it gets to the P= roFTP server starting I get a bunch of crap on the screen like traffic an= d it never gets past that. But if I boot without the smp it goes in. Vern =20 |

I've been playing around trying to manually add a machine account on a RedHat Enterprise box. It used to work when I was using RedHat 9, but now I get an invalid name error. Here is the command I am using, and the error it gives me. useradd -r -g trust -d /dev/null -s /dev/null 'test$' Invalid User Name 'test$' Does anybody know of a work around for this ? Thanks, Cary ps... Sorry for the off topicness |

Hi Thomas, Yes, you have to call the wrapper scripts, as they set up various environment variables before calling the real scripts. Regarding your point about enabling a feature in a bunch of domains at once, this is actually relatively easy in the pro version of Virtualmin. It comes with a bunch of command-line scripts that can perform all the operations that you can do from the web interface, but are more easily called from scripts. These may eventually make their way into the GPL version too.. In fact, the enable-feature.pl command-line script is already in there I think. - Jamie -----Original Message----- From: Thomas Leavitt <th...@th...> Subj: Re: [webmin-l] Error message from a host of scripts... Date: Fri 21 Oct 2005 11:01 am Size: 3K To: web...@li... Jaime, Thanks for the quick responses! Hmm... o.k. I think I've figured it out. I was invoking the scripts directly, instead for through the "wrapper" (which gives the environment) in /etc/webmin/whatever... It appears that when I "recovered" the files for VirtualMin and Webmin, somehow VirtualMin and Webmin got out of sync, and the Webmin manager for Webalizer didn't realize that any of the virtual domains were set up to have reporting enabled. I figured this out when I noticed that two domains I added yesterday were set up differently, and when I went into the Webalizer interface in Webmin directly, and saw that reporting was turned off for all the other domains... So I guess I get to manually turn Webalizer reporting off, then on again, for each and every one of the 90+ domains hosted on the site... On a related subject: this is a real weakness of Virtualmin, from my perspective - the inability to globally manipulate large numbers of domains to perform an indentical function, or to easily inspect the "properties" of a large number of domains (or what one particular setting is set to for a large number of domains). I would love to be able to bring up a screen with nothing on it, for example, but the "Mysql" option setting (turn on or off), or the Webalizer setting, or to be able to configure the "View" when I look at the domain listings. Now, certainly, I could write a script which bypasses the web interface and manipulates all the files directly ... but I'd rather not. At the moment, with 100 domains, the hassle factor associated with a script (along with the risks of screwing something up) isn't worth it... on the other hand, sitting there for an hour clicking through every domain via a relatively slow web interface (is AJAX on the menu at any point) isn't my idea of fun, or productivity. However, if, say, I had even 300 or 400 domains, I'd probably write a script. 1000 - definitely. Suicide would be preferable to doing it manually. If Webmin/Virtualmin had some kind of batch functionality - even (horrors) a command line batch interface, that would be extremely useful. My guess is that people will find it most useful when they are first getting used to Webmin, and realize that they don't like the default settings they gave the first seventy domains they set up... Or in a recovery situation like mine, where something didn't quite jell... Thomas Message: 7 Subject: Re: [webmin-l] Error message from a host of scripts... Usermin 1.170 (with Fetchmail update applied) Webmin 1.240 Mac OS X Server 10.3.9 I enabled & configued scheduled checking. Set destination for Fetchmail output to be "Email to address" so that I could see what happened. This is the output Error ----- mailbox::get_from_address failed : Undefined subroutine &mailbox::get_from_address called at (eval 1) line 2. ----- |

No they don't. I will work on changing that around. (My concern with giving access to the cron module was users being able to upload stuff to the serve= r & then being able to create a cron job to execute arbitrary code. I'll do further research on it to see if I can limit the functionality for what sor= t of cron jobs can be created.) Having them combined is the default though.. the only time Webmin/Usermin will put them on separate screens is when you have the 'full PAM conversions' option enabled on the Authentication page. Compilation failed in require at ./backup.pl line 6. from a host of scripts. This occurs whether I execute the file via cron, or execute the file interactively. Here's the code section from fsdump-lib.pl do '../web-lib.pl'; &init_config(); ... if I add a require '../web-lib-funcs.pl'; line right after the web-lib line, I don't get this error. ../web-lib-funcs.pl is where init_config is. I'm running webmin 1.240 from www.webmin.com Note: I also get this running the same script off my desktop, which uses the webmin sourced from Mandriva, and is I think 1.230. I see other complaints about this in various web forums, but no clear answers yet... Thomas |

Hi Jason, Do your users have access to the Scheduled Cron Jobs module in Usermin? Because that is needed in order to be able to set up a cron job to fetch email.. Also, make sure they are not denied access by cron's own internal configuration, which can be managed by the Cron module in Webmin. - Jamie -----Original Message----- From: Jason Self <jas...@gm...> Subj: [webmin-l] Not Authorized - Fetchmail and Cron Date: Fri 21 Oct 2005 7:40 am Size: 368 bytes To: web...@li... When users access the Fetchmail module in Usermin and click on the button to configure scheduled checking via cron, they get an error saying they're not authorized to configure scheduled checking. How do I authorize them? I've not been able to find any config info on the subject inside Usermin or Webmin. |

Hi Greg,
Linux is probably all that is going to be easy to support at this point.
I have never even broken out the paths into the configuration file (I
inherited the module from another developer, and have never given it as
much attention as it deserves). So all of the programs and files are
accessed with hardcoded paths. As I mentioned, I am going to do a lot
of work on it in the next month or so, and though I didn't mention it
Solaris is also going to be a platform that I'll be supporting...so the
module will eventually work fine on Solaris.
I don't know how tough that will be, though, since it uses a lot of
system-dependent interfaces like /proc and "free" and such. There are
equivalents on most systems, Solaris included, but the syntax and output
won't be identical. Even between the supported Linux versions (2.2,
2.4, and 2.6) there are differences that have broken the module in the
past--there's a lot of ugly "if ($some_version < 99.44) {blahblah;}"
bits in there. Until there is a standard way to gather the data and
interpret it, it's just going to get uglier. SNMP might do it, but I'd
have to pull in a bunch of extra SNMP stuff to get the Perl interface
and the snmp daemon--would probably make it a wholly different module by
the time I was finished.
Anyway, give it a month or two, and you'll be able to use it on Solaris.
Or, you could tackle the changes yourself if you're in a hurry. Any
improvements are certainly welcome. ;-)
