Here are the changes below I did to make it work for me. I think the
in_schema function doesn't work as intended as it tried to save the name
attribute even though it wasn't in my schema.

Hi Jamie,
I had a problem in the past creating users because my LDAP server
doesn't like the name attribute. I have just had it again and looked
into it further. I had a look at a recent Openldap core.schema file and
think I understand what is going on now. It looks from the snippets
below that the attribute 'name' used to be used as the attribute to
contain the user's first or given name. The attribute 'givenname' or
'gn' is nowadays used for this purpose. The name is a SUP (superior)
objectclass - probably containing all forms of the user's 'name'. This
means that 'name' can't be used as an LDAP user attribute. Could you
please change the 'name' attribute to 'gn' in the LDAP Users & Groups
module. You might need an option to use the old attribute in the module
config to stop breaking sites still using the 'name' attribute. I will
hack the version of Webmin for now so it's not urgent.
Thanks
Murray

Hi Dave,
Thanks, I see the cause of this problem now ... it can happen if changing the password of a user whose password is currently blank. The next release of Webmin will fix it though.

Hi Dave,
That looks like a bug in Webmin.
Which module are you doing the password change in though? It seems that the caller of unix_crypt is passing in the wrong parameters.

Previously, whenI was using the Webmin 1.230 (on RedHat EL3)passwd module, there were no problems.
Now, using the Webmin 1.250 version, I get the error Failed to change password : Failed to encrypt password :.
Looking at web-funcs-lib.pl, at the unix_crypt() subroutine, I can see that if the call to crypt() fails, then Crypt::UnixCrypt is used instead. Indeed, in my case the
$rv = eval crypt(\$pass, \$salt);
call is resulting in $rv being undef. The fallback to Crypt::UnixCrypt does not work because I do not have that perl module installed.
Now my question is: why is the call to crypt() failing? It was not failing previously. Doing a little digging, I discovered the when the failure occurs, $pass is equal to the old password and $salt is equal to undef. Without salt, crypt() appears to return nothing. Why is the salt undef?
Thanks
Dave Isaacs

Hi Neil,
It looks like your virtuals file has an entry Postfix cannot handle ... perhaps something with a * or other regular expression in it.

Hi Jamie,
Yep... for some reason that was missing... it used to be there.... :) because I have other virtual domains on the server in question..
It seems to update the virtual.db file, but issues a warning:

Which I suspect is a postfix issue and not a webmin issue...

Hi Dave,
You are absolutely correct .. Webmin really does the whole posted input into
memory! Sorry, I totally forgot about that..

I looked into this too, and found that Webmin is currently terminating the
browser connection if the uploaded data is more than the set limit. Unfortunately,
no browsers take kindly to this, and display an error message about the connection
being closed.
In the next release of Webmin, it will handle this better by reading all the data
submitted by the browser, but not actually storing it in memory if the limit is exceeded.
That is not quite ideal, but still better than the current situation.

Hi Dave,
That looks like a bug in Webmin.
Which module are you doing the password change in though? It seems that the caller of unix_crypt is passing in the wrong parameters.

Previously, whenI was using the Webmin 1.230 (on RedHat EL3)passwd module, there were no problems.
Now, using the Webmin 1.250 version, I get the error "Failed to change password : Failed to encrypt password :".
Looking at web-funcs-lib.pl, at the unix_crypt() subroutine, I can see that if the call to crypt() fails, then Crypt::UnixCrypt is used instead. Indeed, in my case the
$rv = eval "crypt(\$pass, \$salt)";
call is resulting in $rv being undef.
Thanks

My experience shows that this does not work.
I put a 1000000 limit in my call to ReadParseMime then attempted to upload a
1GB file. Using top, I watched the miniserv.pl process climb to about 600MB
before crashing. ReadParseMime was never called because my module was never
invoked.
If I look at miniserv.pl, at around line 1740, I see
$clen = $header{"content-length"};
if ($method eq "POST" && $clen_read < $clen) {
# Still some more POST data to read
while(length($postinput) < $clen) {
$buf = &read_data($clen - length($postinput));
if (!length($buf)) {
&http_error(500, "Failed to read ".
"POST request");
}
$postinput .= $buf;
}
}
This looks an awful lot like reading in the entire file upload. As a test,
I wrote the length($postinput) value to a log file (right before the call to
read_data) and found that miniserv.pl was looping in an attempt to read the
entire file upload.
Then I stumbled upon the forkcgis configuration setting, which appears to
switch on a alternative method of invoking the webmin modules. This method
has miniserv.pl forwarding the file upload to the forked process as it is
received. Unfortunately, this does not work either. Now when I upload a
large file, something goes wrong and there is never a response. The log
messages I put in the miniserv loop shows that about 7500 bytes are read in,
and then everything stops. Although this is better than crashing the
server, it is still not correct.
Thanks

Hi Dave,
In your custom module, you can pass a parameter to the ReadParseMime
function to limit uploads to a specified number of bytes. This is the only
function that actually reads the upload into memory - the main miniserv.pl
process does not.

Restricting file upload size
Is there any way to have miniserv reject file uploads over a certain
size?
I have implemented a custom module that allows users to upload an image
file. However, if the user attempts to upload a very large file (say 1GB),
the whole server grinds to a halt as miniserv attempts to load the file into
memory.
I can put size restrictions in my module, but miniserv still attempts to
upload the entire file before passing control to my module. What I need to
happen is for miniserv to reject the upload immediately (perhaps with Error
413 - Request Entity Too Large), without uploading anything.
Thanks

Hi All - I have a server that is hosed to the extent I want to rebuild it. But since there is information there I will need to move tot he rebuilt server, I want to check here first about backup procedures. Items I need to back up and restore: 1 - Virtual servers created by virtualmin (the whole shebang, including databases) 2 - Additional regular users and their directories 3 - Overall Webmin settings 4 - Perl modules installed System is/will be FC4 Finally, I am thinking about whether or not I should install some sort of virtualization software. I noticed on another thread Jamie mentioned one he hadn't tested, is there any that is known to work with webmin? Open source only of course :) Does anyone have experience with Xensource or others? Thanks in advance! Barry |

Hi Marcos, I haven't personally run Webmin on Vserver or OpenVZ, but I have used it with no problems on Solaris Zones, which are similar. As long as the virtual environment doesn't place any restrictions on processes running as root or available ports, Webmin should run fine. Some virtual/jail environments that I have seen don't allow the same port to be used between different servers, meaning that you need to run specially modified mail servers and so on. But if OpenVZ doesn't do this, Webmin should run fine. - Jamie -----Original Message----- From: Marcos Rubinstein <we...@al...> Subj: [webmin-l] linux-Vserver / OpenVZ and web/user/virtualmin Date: Thu 9 Feb 2006 8:20 pm Size: 1K To: web...@li... Is there any problems with linux-Vserver or OpenVZ with webmin usermin or virtualmin? I'm in the planning stages of setting up a new server for a client. I like the idea of virtual servers, even if I have only one client in the server.. I do like the idea that I can always check from the host server a virtual that have been compromized... and also I can set up two identical virtuals... if the active one is compromised, while I investigate what's going on... I can activate the other! In any case... I would like to know if there are any problems with my favorite GUI :)... that I do need to be aware of... I use in other server and old virtualizacion scheme... and with that virtualmin was very difficult to set up... and.. even if OT... which one would you recommend???? I like from OpenVZ that each virtual has access to its own IP tables... in the other hand... I like to support and use real community projects like linux-Vserver (OpenVZ is the open source rendition of virtuozo... ) TIA Marcos |

What happens if apache fails to restart when you're making a mod? No way to get back in to fix the error via Webmin.... Just looking for benefits... Sorry to be off topic. John Hinton [Karthi]=20 I got your point. Actually I don't have any issues with miniserv. It works nice. But we have another network monitor runs on apache. I just thought of integrating these two in a single web server, if it is possible.=20 Thanks, [Karthi] =20 ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc.
