fine, it's only the mysql module and it is on multiple servers.
it looks like this:
pdating Webmin modules ..
Updating module mailboxes to version 1.293.
Fixes problem : When a user is restricted to only a subset of
mailboxes and the system has more than 200 users, no users appear on the
module's main page.
Downloading mailboxes-1.290-3.wbm.gz (167263 bytes) ..

I think it best to leave core schema unaltered by dummies like me. Moreover, if Jamie intends to have it universal for LDAP, it would probably be better to just use givenName and not gn I could hack it myself by not using his simplifications but rather putting the givenname and sn attributes in the custom section but that isn't the point. I think Jamie will get where I am going with this. Craig |

It used to work because I did set up a few users but I updated to 1.290 and now, I've got a problem. Saving a 'user', I get "Failed to save user : Failed to modify user in LDAP database : attribute "gn" not allowed which of course means that I am showing the givenName and sn fields and have entries in them (in fact, this entry was created with earlier version of webmin/ldap user admin) and I merely clicked on it to edit it and then clicked on save to produce the error. I've been fooling around with config and now have it set to 'inetOrgPerson' for 'Objectclass to add for givenName' but have tried person, organizationalPerson to no avail. I am using Fedora Directory Server The objectclasses of the record I am editing (for clarification purposes) are: person, organizationalPerson, inetOrgPerson, posixAccount, top, sambaSamAccount, ShadowAccount (in order per LDAP Attributes if that is significant) I have no problem using Fedora Directory console and adding the 'givenName' but I can never edit and save a user unless I completely remove all contents of the givenName field. I have the impression that there is no 'gn' alias to 'givenName' attribute - especially when I see things like this... http://directory.fedora.redhat.com/wiki/Howto:phpLdapAdmin#How_to_create_a_posixUser_in_Fedora_DS Craig |

Your issue is actually the following:
[global]
workgroup = WORKGROUP
netbios name = SAMBASERVER
realm = WORKGROUP.DOMAIN.COM
preferred master = no
domain master = no
local master = no
server string = SAMBA File Server
security = ADS
encrypt passwords = yes
log level = 3
log file = /var/log/samba/%m
max log size = 50
# Added for 2K3 issue
client schannel = no
# username map = /etc/samba/smbusers
winbind separator = +
idmap uid = 10000-20000
idmap gid = 10000-20000
winbind enum users = yes
winbind enum groups = yes
client signing = yes
Notice the "Added for 2K3 issue" line?
The issue is the Win2K3 does not handle the schannel properly...

Subject: Re: [webmin-l] Samba - Connecting to a Windows 2003 Server and AD
I went back and re-read your original note. Here are some random
suggestions, FWIW:
I believe the correct JOIN statement for a 2003 AD is
net ads join...
You will also want to make sure your smb.conf has these:
client signing = mandatory
workgroup = <Your AD Domain without the .com>
security = ADS
client use spnego = yes
encrypt passwords = true
realm = <Your AD Domain with the .com>
password server = <Your AD PDC, e.g. MyPDC>
I had to dumb down the default /etc/krb5.conf, note the ones in all
caps:
[libdefaults]
default_realm = YOURDOMAIN.COM
[realms]
YOURDOMAIN.COM = {
kdc = MyPDC.yourdomain.com
}
[domain_realms]
.mypdc.yourdomain.com = YOURDOMAIN.COM
Dunno if you were also trying to get winbind working, if so, the
official samba docs are pretty good:
http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/winbind.html
Hope something here helps...

Thanks again but still can't get it right. Like I said, I can see the
server in the AD but I can't communicate with it. It is also causing IP
conflicts because windows is not registering the static IP's. I wonder
if there is a place to go to pay by incident to get this done once and
for all.

Dunno if you were also trying to get winbind working, if so, the
official samba docs are pretty good:
http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/winbind.html
Hope something here helps...

AD
Thanks again but still can't get it right. Like I said, I can see the
server in the AD but I can't communicate with it. It is also causing IP
conflicts because windows is not registering the static IP's. I wonder
if there is a place to go to pay by incident to get this done once and
for all.

If you want, I can wait before reinstalling on my desktop system so I can test what you are adding. As for the other distributions, no other distributions that I know are configured this way, but I must admit I've not tested many distros... Only that when you create a new user, you have to define which rights this user will have. If you add a new user to the admin group, it will be allowed to do every administrative task, from the CLI or from the GUI. When adding a user with Ubuntu's "user and group" tool, there 2 tabs. The Advanced tab let you say if the user is desktop user or administrator, and the third tab lets you specify extra privileges (for example, if you want a particular desktop user to have extra privileges). -- +-------------------------------------------------------------+ Albert Charron +-------------------------------------------------------------+ Linux Counter member #157482 Registered computers: 195048, 164158, 279022, 323762, 328344 +-------------------------------------------------------------+ |

From https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo "By default, the root account is locked in Ubuntu. This means you cannot login as root or use su. Instead, the installer will setup sudo to allow the user that is created during install to run all administrative commands. This means that in the terminal you can use sudo for commands that require root privileges. All programs in the menu will use a graphical sudo to prompt for a password. When sudo asks for a password, it needs YOUR USER Password; this means that a root password is not needed." I think the idea is that ubuntu is intended to be a single user desktop. Linspire goes further and lets the user be root all the time. Both of those set off a lot of flames from sysadmins but users don't complain at all. I wonder does win32 see the share but not let you in because FC3 is on a different workgroup name, check the workgroup name with your windows system, making MSHOME the same as the linux one or whatever, just match the workgroup, I think windows lets you see other workgroups but will not let you in if your not part of that workgroup, hence why you can see the share but not enter (if you are sure you have all rights to theses areas) - tho it does still sound like a netbios block to me due to your firewall(s), normaly the folder/share is also seen no problem but you can't enter it when zonealarm etc is blocking one side of the network/traffic Is XP runing its own built in Firewall? I know you can right mouse somewhere (network connections, then your device thats using the network) and there should be area to untic the built in firewall, just incase it has netbios protected as default for local movment. jeff, > Thanks for the suggestion. I just created another account on my test server (Ubuntu 6.06 server) called miketest. That account was not added to the admin group and sudoing either got nothing or "miketest is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported." So I guess only the initial users can sudo unless you add others to the admin group. Hope that helps, Mike |

Jamie Cameron wrote: > > Thanks for the info .. > Does Ubuntu allow you to sudo to root without needing to > re-enter your password? > > - Jamie I'm not sure to understand exactly your question, so my answer might be a bit... not accurate... Let's try if I sudo once for a command (let say, dpkg -i webmin_1.290.deb), if I sudo a second time within a short period of time, there's no need to reenter the password again. Also, if I run a script as sudo, the entire script seems to have root access... for exemple, I did a simple scrit that turns off samba, write to a file and restart samba. If I run sudo ./scriptname.sh , it asks for the password, then executes the entire script, including restarting samba, which requires root privileges... I hope this helps. If not, I'll be more than happy to help... -- +-------------------------------------------------------------+ Albert Charron +-------------------------------------------------------------+ Linux Counter member #157482 Registered computers: 195048, 164158, 279022, 323762, 328344 +-------------------------------------------------------------+ |
