Actually, what Jamie said is correct; rather than an NS record that looks like this: @ IN NS ns5.mydomain.com. or mydomain.com. IN NS ns5.mydomain.com. (which create NS records for mydomain.com) what he suggested would create a record like this: secondary IN NS ns5.mydomain.com. (Actually, it appears Webmin fully qualifies the delegated zone: secondary.mydomain.com. IN NS ns5.mydomain.com. I'm not certain whether that's good or bad in the long run - it would cause Weirdness on some of my zones.) > On 10/27/06, Jamie Cameron <jca...@we...> wrote: >> Create an NS record in mydomain.com named secondary, with ns5.mydomain.com >> as the name server. To rephrase this a bit, specific to Webmin: Create an NS record with "Zone Name" as the zone you want to delegate (either the partial name secondary, or the fully-qualified secondary.mydomain.com. [note the trailing dot!]), name server as the FQDN of the nameserver you want. -kgd |

I understand .. that is exactly what my instructions do :-) Basically, if you have a DNS record like : secondary.mydomain.com. IN NS ns5.mydomain.com. Any queries for secondary.mydomain.com will be referred to the nameserver ns5.mydomain.com. - Jamie On 31/Oct/2006 12:07 Matt wrote .. > Understood, if I want to deligate mydomain.com... however I want to > deligate secondary.mydomain.com to ns5.mydomain.com.. that is .. Mmmh. Strictly speaking, it stays mounted, but goes dormant or disconnected. This SHOULD, IIRC, be entirely hidden from userland. I see similar behaviour on a W2K box mounting a number of Samba shares; after an indefinite amount of idle time, Windows considers the share inactive in some way, and shows its icon in My Computer with a red X over it. I'm not sure it's *possible* to disable the "properly" (AKA stop the client and/or server from dropping garbage into userland, or considering a share "disconnected" when it hasn't been explicitly removed), but... > I realize this is OT for this list, but hope someone has run into this > before. Find out how long it takes for the mount to go to sleep. Add a cron job to touch a file or run ls (or something that accesses content on the mount) set to run at a shorter interval than the sleep time. NFS is fractionally more stable in this kind of arrangement; you might also want to see if you can use NFS instead of CIFS/SMB. -kgd |

I have looked through as much Samba literature as I can find, but cannot seem to find out why a mount that I have created using webmin from a RH EL 3 box to a Buffalo Terrabyte NAS server does not stay mounted. It needs to be woken up, which it does on it's own whenever queried, but I have some applications that fail if it isn't available immediately when it looks for the mount. The NAS is a Windows box. All works well using the resultant mount when it is awake. I realize this is OT for this list, but hope someone has run into this before. I can usually use a command before running the apps in a shell file, and it only needs to be something as simple as 'df' to wake it up, but on long running jobs, such as backups that create temp files before writing, it may go back to sleep before it can be re-awakened. I see in my log files the following entries that are associated with the wakeup. tdb/tdbutil.c:tdb_log(725) tdb(/var/cache/samba/gencache.tdb): tdb_lock failed on list 62 ltype=0 (Bad file descriptor) But I have not been able to nail it down even with this information Thanks for any help. Actually, I was wrong about that message - it comes from Webmin itself. If ntpdate isn't installed, Webmin falls back to using the old Unix 'time' protocol, and it looks like the server you were talking to is reporting a bad time using that protocol (which Webmin properly rejects). - Jamie On 30/Oct/2006 22:54 and...@fr... wrote .. > OK..... > You were right.. the problem was ntpdate... > > It was not installed at all !!! > > Now I installed the package xntp (4.2.0a on suse 10.1) providing ntpdate > and everything is OK, both from commandline and from webmin > > Anyway I think the message should be : "Hey !! where is ntpdate ? Hallelujah! Removing nscd removed the problem! :-) (perhaps Webmin can check for it running and WARN on the VM-screen) Is there any way I can force date/time formats; I logged on as the VM-admin= user for a newly created VM-domain, and it showed "31/Oct/2006 11:55 by ro= ot" as the creation time. I'd like to see "2006-10-31 11:55 by root" there. Also, is there a way to automatically set-up the awstats directory as prote= cted (with the unix user as an added user)? As it is right now, I can acces= s the stats as "anyone" by going to the http://www.site.com/cgi-bin/awstats= .pl -joho ------------------------- Ursprungligt meddelande: Fr=E5n: Jamie Cameron <jca...@we...> Till: Webmin users list <web...@li...> Kopia:=20 Datum: tisdag, 31 oktober 2006 00:55 =C4rende: Re: [webmin-l] [1.300] Virtualmin; putting it all together 99% of the time when I see this, the cause is the nscd daemon, which caches users and groups and confuses Webmin. OK.....
You were right.. the problem was ntpdate...
It was not installed at all !!!
Now I installed the package xntp (4.2.0a on suse 10.1) providing ntpdate
and everything is OK, both from commandline and from webmin
Anyway I think the message should be : "Hey !! where is ntpdate ? I can't
find it !" rather than 39018 days.....
Thank you very much for your help,
Andrea

That error actually comes from the ntpdate program which Webmin calls to
do the sync. Do you get the same message if you run :
ntpdate -s remote.server.hostname
as root at the shell prompt? If so, does it happen even for other
time servers, like time.nist.gov or time.deakin.edu.au ?

99% of the time when I see this, the cause is the nscd daemon, which caches users and groups and confuses Webmin. Use the Bootup and Shutdown module to kill it and stop it from being started at boot time! Then use the Users and Groups module to manually remove these test groups.. - Jamie On 30/Oct/2006 05:38 Joaquim Homrighausen wrote .. > > Here's the error message: > > "Creating home directory .. > .. done > > Creating Unix group test6.test.domain.se .. > Failed to create Unix group!" > > > > > ------------------------- > Ursprungligt meddelande: > Fr=E5n: Jamie Cameron <jca...@we...> > Till: Webmin users list <web...@li...> > Kopia: > Datum: onsdag, 25 oktober 2006 06:49 > =C4rende: Re: [webmin-l] [1.300] Virtualmin; putting it all together > On 24/Oct/2006 06:22 Joaquim Homrighausen wrote .. > > > > When I use Virtualmin, I get an error if I enable the checkbox with "Create > > Unix User"; if I clear it, no error occurs. My current plan is to modify miniserv.pl to change the 7 days to be 30 minutes (our session timeout). This will ensure that after the session times out, the script is run and the session deleted from the %sessiondb hash. I just stumbled upon this while spelunking through the code. However, I do not see the logout_script being called immediately after a timeout. Instead I see it being called (around line 499) when removing sessions that are over 7 *days* old. That 7 days appears to be hard-coded in miniserv.pl. The only other call to logout_script I see occurs when the user explicitly click the Logout link. I am running 1.290, in case that makes a difference. That error actually comes from the ntpdate program which Webmin calls to do the sync. Do you get the same message if you run : ntpdate -s remote.server.hostname as root at the shell prompt? If so, does it happen even for other time servers, like time.nist.gov or time.deakin.edu.au ? - Jamie On 29/Oct/2006 23:03 and...@fr... wrote .. > I have a strange problem on a Suse Linux 10.1 > > When I try to configure a time server and press "sync and apply", it tells > me: > > > > > Time server different with local time is too large : 39018 days > > > > > actually the server has quite the right time > > time.ien.it time:7.57.15 > > box time: > > Mon Oct 30 07:55:14 CET 2006 > > so the difference is about 2 minutes, not more then a century.....(106 > years and more) > > ??? > > p.s. > it is the only box with this problem.. what could I check ? webmin is > updated: > > Version 1.300 on srvlnx04.frameweb.it (SuSE Linux 10.1) > > kernel: > srvlnx04:~ # uname -a > Linux srvlnx04 2.6.16.21-0.25-default #1 Tue Sep 19 07:26:15 UTC 2006 > i686 > i686 i386 GNU/Linux > > > > > > > Chi ricevesse questa mail per errore e' gentilmente pregato di cancellarla. > > Visitate il sito http://www.frameweb.it > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Using Tomcat but need to do more?
