It kinda looks now like the modules that display lists are the most likely to cause this error. I have seen this behavior before, but I guess I didn't make the connection until now. Maybe it is not miniserv itself as much as teh perl programs? Virtual min is one, I have seen it when listing aliases and especially when listing email for a user account, or the results of a query on email. I also saw it just now when trying to compose an email by a brand new user. Maybe there is some peak usage there? Also I wonder if the new frames them causes extra hits on the server, causing it to spawn new children more often then it would have before? Is there some configuration I can do in that area, like I can with apache> As for the discrepancy between the system info display in webmin and top and free, the latter two seem to be in close alignment, a lot closer the webmin display is to either. BTW, I just noticed I had pop/pop3s and smtp active in zinetd, and I also had sendmail and dovecot running as services. I just turned off the xinetd ones, will see if that helps any. Best, Barry |

Thanks for pointing this out - that is minor bug, as the functions in toggleview.js aren't used anywhere except the left frame, which does use the correct path. But it is bad to generate so many messages in the error log, so I'll fix this in the next release. - Jamie |

On another machine without preloading, only 10MB is used. Still no indication in the browser it completed, but when the load in top went down I assumed all was well. then I rebooted my server, and now webmin shows: 128 MB total, 80 MB used while top shows: Mem: 131072k total, 67184k used, 63888k free Better, but still a big gap. I suppose as my server runs, the memory usage might creep up to a point, but for now webmin seems able to load the virtualmin page. But I am not happy about the gap in memory usage reported, nor the idea that it might take on the order of 30MB of memory just to load the virtualmin summary page.... that sounds like an awful lot! Any tips appreciated, as I can't really increase the memory or create swap space on this server. Can I tune webmin/virtualmin/miniserv to use less memory? How about mysql? apache is already down to just about nada - I suppose I could make a thin server and a thick one with php and perl, but given that I only have maxservers=3 for http, I don't know how much is to be gained by reducing it to 2... I noticed the error message: /unauthenticated/toggleview.js : File not found in miniserv.error when I select the new framed theme. I do have: # locate toggleview.js /usr/libexec/webmin/blue-theme/toggleview.js so maybe a file either got dropped from the theme (or this is evidence of the upgrade not being fully completed as I thought might have happened earlier?) OK - a little more info after some more testing - It does indeed seem I am running into a low memory condition. How much memory does miniserv/webmin need anyway? Miniserv.error gives me the sparse message: Out of memory! which doesn't help me help it :( For now this seems to be happening most consistently in the virtualmin module (I have ! 10 domains, with form 1 to 6 or so aliases in each one, possibly up to about 5 subdomains in a few of them. This seems to be happening regardless of the theme - the "old webmin theme" has the same issue. I do notice that the new framed thems reports the memory usage at some instant in time. But it doesn't seem to be anything close to what top is reporting. For instance, webmin reports: 128 MB total, 110 MB used, while top is showing Mem: 131072k total, 88856k used, That is a big difference in a tight space - so how is webmin calculating the amount? Hmm, been working on my email system, and stuff may have bounced for a few hours over the last few days, so I hope I am still subscribed to this list. I tried to upgrade webmin from 1.290 to 1.310. Not sure if it went well, eventually had to to an rpm install by hand the other day. Today, due to issues listed below, I did an upgrade via the interface, telling it to reinstall if the same version already installed. That ran for a while - I watched it in a terminal window via top - and I guess it ran OK,. the main frame in webmin didn't really give any indication after the message that said :please wait a minute before continuing". So now I want to add a new domain via virtualmin gpl, and I am seeing what might be timeout behaviors. Also I am seeing similar behavior on other screens as well. Basically what happens, is the main frame returns from the server before all the html (or even *any*) of the html is sent. In the case of the virtualmin screen, I can't create the server. Inthe case of listing email domains on a server, I don't always get the full list. I tried restarting both my browser and the server, the behavior does not change. System info: VS running under virtuozzo, 128MB memory .CentOs 4.3 Top reports between 50 and 65MB in use. so it doesn't appear to be a memory issue. How can I be sure I have installed the upgrade successfully? Any ideas mwhat might be my problem? Best, Barry PS - I am not a fan of the new frame based UI - I can no longer refresh the main frame, which is something I seemed to be doing habitually as a shortcut. Is there anyway to go back to the previous Simple Blue theme? |

Jamie,
I am stuck in a not too bad-a-place right now. Here is what I am seeing:
When I add a forward zone, and click "Apply Changes" from within the =
"Edit Master Zone" beleive it or not, the zone becomes active on both =
servers.
No reverse is added automaticaly.
I add the reverse to the arpa zone and click the "Apply Changes" and the =
new reverse becomes active on both.
When I delete the forward, I am presented with a screen that asks me if =
I want to Delete the Reverse (I say yes) and Delete from Slave (I say =
yes), and hit Delete, it takes out the zone, arpa antry, and config from =
master and slave. Then when I go back to the mainpage and hit apply, =
both master and slave are HUPed.
So again, the only real 'problem' I see is that the arpa entry is not =
being added when a forward zone is added. <--- any ideas?
As for the Forward and Reverse needing to be applied, I havent got far =
enough to see that problem. But would'nt a HUP solve that?

Curious... if a zone is updated (and the serial incremented <g>), and the master is reloaded, it *should* send a NOTIFY to the slave server(s), which will then AXFR the zone. Logfiles from both sides would be interesting to see for the failure case. I have a local RBL passed on to several local slaves this way; the zone file is regenerated and BIND (master) reloaded about every twenty minutes. The only case I can think of where this might not happen is if NOTIFY has been disabled - in an all-BIND DNS environment, I can't see any advantage to doing so. This obviously doesn't apply to *adding* or *removing* zones; so far as I know there's no way to do that automatically through BIND's own internal processing. :/ -kgd |

One 'bug' in Webmin at the moment is that when you add a record to a forward zone which triggers the addition of a corresponding record to reverse zone, <span style=3D"font-weight: bold;">both </span>zones need to be applied for the change to fully take effect. If you only click Apply in the forward zone, BIND will not reload the reverse zone.<br /><br />I am still working out a way to properly fix this ..<br /><br />=A0- Jamie<br /><br />On 10/Dec/2006 18:06 Grant Peel wrote ..

In a cluster setup, this will restart both the master and slave

Webmin can do automatic reverse DNS entries in non-class-C zones =

If your ISP delegates blocks smaller than a class C and you have =

Hi Grant,
You need to click the Apply Changes button at the bottom of =
the main page in the BIND module after adding zone. In a cluster setup, =
this will restart both the master and slave servers, and so should =
trigger the transfer of both forward and reverse zones..

When deleting a zone:

Hi all,
I have spent a lot of time getting the Bind8 DNS modules =
to work (cluster) on my master and slave server.
THe only question (I think!) that I have now is:

how to configure the master to tell the slave to reconfig or reload the =
zone?
(The slave named.conf is being updated, but the changes =

That is an interesting setup .. and should in fact make it easier for you to implement in Webmin.<br />It sounds like all you need to do is create a regular class C reverse zone, but only populate the IP addresses in the range assigned to you. If you have a forward zone, Webmin will do the reverse address creation automatically.<br /><br />=A0- Jamie<br /><br />On 10/Dec/2006 02:05 Grant Peel wrote ..

Jamie,
After many millions more milliseconds of testing, here is the sum of =

On systems where some users can sudo to root and run any command, Webmin allows you to login as these users - but your actual username as far as Webmin is concerned for module grant and permission purposes is 'root'. > At the same time the 'New module grants' 'Default behavior - grant new > modules to root or admin' so which one in this case: root or admin? the system > root user doesn't belong to the system admin group and the system user that > belongs to the admin group is not a webmin user. Can you please clarify It is supposed to grant to the Webmin user root or admin, whichever exists. At least, that is what happens for me :) - Jamie |

Hi Grant,<br />You need to click the Apply Changes button at the bottom of the main page in the BIND module after adding zone. In a cluster setup, this will restart both the master and slave servers, and so should trigger the transfer of both forward and reverse zones..<br /><br />=A0- Jamie<br /><br />On 9/Dec/2006 06:25 Grant Peel wrote ..

Hi (again) all,
I *think* I have a grip on what is, and is not happening here. ANyt =

When adding a new zone on the master server, through webmin,
Q: The (FORWARD) zone is added and configured, and the named.conf =
change IS sent to the slave, but, the zone is not being made active on =
the slave. Is this normal?
If not any ideas how to fix?
The reverse zone is not being updated at all on the master or slave. =
(yes, the update reverse is ON by default).
Q: Any ideas how to fix?
When deleting a zone:
The (forward) zone does get deleted from the master and the slave.
The reverse does get removed from the master, and the serial number =
is inc'd. The reverse is not done right away on the slave, but I suspect =
the refresh will update it in an hour.
If I add or delete a reverse record and click the apply button, it DOES =
