Hello all, I have just found a security issue in Webmin working under Ubuntu. People with sudo access can access Webmin and then can view all the users' home directories with their files. Even if the files are protected, they still can be viewed by users with sudo access through webmin! Is there any solution to this? Regards, |

Also to throw this out, make sure you haven't limited "testing size" too small. Traditionally spam was small, no too much anymore. I fixed a lot of issues by cranking this number up. See here: After logging into Virtualmin, click Email Messages -> Spam and Virus Scanning. There, you can set "Maximum message size to process for spamc". Mine is set for 1Mb now. And still unchecked spam sneaks through. Check the mail headers, make sure the messages getting through are getting checked, it will guide you further. Marcos Rubinstein wrote: > Thanks Kris and Dave for your feedback :) > > I was (actually I am) looking for a replacement of SpamAssassin because > it's not working right :( You should probably ask the SA users list (https://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/MailingLists) for help; chances are someone there can narrow down what's going wrong. A replacement like OrangeAssassin isn't likely to do you much good, since it's relying on essentially the same actual filter rules and DNS lookups. > for one of the domains that I use it in a virtual server, with less than > 10 users, but with one of the users getting over 600 emails a day... > with about 400 clearly marked as spam... but from the remaining 200 > about 130 should be spam, but not detected.. even though the client > using usermin (with the virtualmin theme for email) religiously uses the > "delete spam" button, it seems that SpamAssassin doesn't "learn"... :( A couple of questions to get you going before asking spamassassin-users: 1) Does this machine run its own local DNS cache, configured *without* upstream forwarding cache(s)? Many "poor filter results" issues are due to using a large central DNS cache (or something like the Google or EasyDNS caches), and having queries for many DNSBLs blocked. Look for URIBL_BLOCKED in your SA logging or message headers - if you see this, check your DNS server configuration to make sure you're using a local cache (either directly on that machine, or one that's only shared with a few other low-volume systems), and that it's not forwarding queries to a more central cache. If you have a local cache on this machine, with no forwarding, and you're seeing URIBL_BLOCKED, you may want to consider a datafeed subscription to one or more DNSBLs. The free public servers for lists with usage limits (Spamhaus, uribl.com, surbl.com at least) are suitable for a fairly high volume of mail; several orders of magnitude more than a couple of personal or small business domains. 2) If you retest some of those missed messages some time later, does SA tag them as spam? If your targeted user happens to be in the unlucky position of "first target of the spam run", the DNSBLs may simply have no data to match that message when first received, but easily score 20+ even five minutes later due to the DNSBL hits. 3) What does "sa-learn --dump magic" show when run in a shell under the user account having trouble? Look particularly at the nspam and nham lines; if one or both is less than 200, the Bayes subsystem won't be used in scoring. Ham in particular tends to be a bit tricky to learn per-user, and unfortunately autolearning tends to learn low-scoring spam as ham, leading to more spam hitting low-scoring BAYES_* rules. Learning the entire Inbox as ham, after making sure it doesn't have any spam in it, is a quick way to rebalance things. Learning the Sent folder is probably safer, but likely has less variety of ham. Those should help you get started on tuning SA; if you have further questions you should probably take them to the SA users list. -kgd |

But... if I select the same email on the folder view.. .and click forward... then it will do it! (forward all attachments!). any idea why I have this problem? - server (a virtual server... a container on an openVz) is centos 6.7 - using sendmail and mbox (the old single file for each "mail folder") with INBOX in /var/spoo/mail/username and all other in /home/username/mail/ - webmin/usermin up to date - theme: virtualmin framed theme Thanks :) Peace, with Justice! Thanks Kris and Dave for your feedback :) I was (actually I am) looking for a replacement of SpamAssassin because it's not working right :( for one of the domains that I use it in a virtual server, with less than 10 users, but with one of the users getting over 600 emails a day... with about 400 clearly marked as spam... but from the remaining 200 about 130 should be spam, but not detected.. even though the client using usermin (with the virtualmin theme for email) religiously uses the "delete spam" button, it seems that SpamAssassin doesn't "learn"... :( I'm using sendmail and procmail, with the following /etc/procmailrc : DEFAULT=/var/spool/mail/$LOGNAME ORGMAIL=/var/spool/mail/$LOGNAME VERBOSE=no # Logging? (rotated once a week by a cronjob) LOGFILE=/var/log/procmail DROPPRIVS=yes VERBOSE=yes :0fw | /usr/local/bin/clamassassin :0: * ^X-Virus-Status: Yes $HOME/mail/viri :0fw | /usr/bin/spamc :0 * ^X-Spam-Status: Yes $HOME/mail/spam and spamassassin is started with "service spamassassin start" and shows in a ps as: root 29199 0.0 1.5 272840 65484 ? Ss Apr19 0:09 /usr/bin/spamd -d -c -m5 -H -r /var/run/spamd.pid Netstat shows a "spamd child" running on tcp port 783 both on local host and on all interfaces. in any case.... the problem with spam with that person (that happens to be my sister ;) ) is the reason I'm looking for a repleacement for Spamassassin. Thanks :) Peace, with Justice! Si, se puede! Marcos "For what can war, but endless war, still breed?" Marcos Rubinstein wrote: > Anybody working in an usermin/webmin module for OrangeAssassin? > > OrangeAssassin is a "drop in replacement" for SpamAssassin. > (https://www.orangeassassin.org) Well, first off, if it's written in Python it is fundamentally NOT a "drop-in replacement", because many setups use the SpamAssassin Perl libraries directly rather than the basic "spamassassin" command-line wrapper or spamc/spamd. For the same reason, the handful of third-party plugins (I think there are a few still around that haven't been integrated upstream) will also not work. On the configuration side, at a quick scan over their docs, it looks like it should be able to consume virtually any SpamAssassin configuration without change. Options like bayes_sql_dsn will probably need tweaking depending on how hard they worked to Python-ize the exposed Perl DBI parameters, but basic settings and rules look to be substantially identical and it refers to standard SpamAssassin configuration paths. I briefly tried to install it, but it doesn't seem to understand how to do a per-user install in your own home directory, and I don't feel like polluting and possibly overwriting anything on a live system by installing to system paths as root. -kgd |

Anybody working in an usermin/webmin module for OrangeAssassin? OrangeAssassin is a "drop in replacement" for SpamAssassin. (https://www.orangeassassin.org) Thanks :) Just my opinion, but even though it looks interesting, I doubt its ready for prime time. Webmin seems best if it sticks to tried and true server platforms. Hello! I think I am too affected by the bug described here: https://www.virtualmin.com/node/51730 In the comments I have read that version 5.07-3 fixes it. Currently I have 5.07 (8th March 2017) installed from http://download.webmin .com/download/virtualmin/ , and there is no newer version available. Trying to goolge-fu it i found out about this alternative repo at https://www.virtualmin.com/node/42571 The problem is I need it in .wb.gz format. Is there a repo where I can obtain the latest virtualmin module in wbm.gz format? Thank you cserem |
