I just installed virtualmin (latest from the download page) using the automated install and everything check good during the installation. However, when I try to log into the server at the address given by the vitrualmin installation at the end of the install, I get an error message: can't establish a connection to the server at FQD.com:10000 where FQD is my fully qualified domain name for the server. I am wondering if the webserver that virtualmin installs and uses was not started after the installation. How can I check this and if so, how can I start it at the command line? I have never had this to happen all the times I have installed webmin or virtualmin. -K |

Good morning It'd be nice if I, from the list of active leases, could create a permanent/fixed IP address assignment, where it copies necessary/possible details (like address, currently active IP address, possibly name) and then switch to edit mode for that entry. -joho |

Hi everyone, Webmin version 1.860 is now available for download from http://www.webmin.com/ . This release includes the following updates : * Fixed an XSS vulnerability in the MySQL module (thanks to Munzir Taha). * Fixed a security issue that could be exploited by using the Upload and Download module to fetch an untrusted URL (thanks to Maor Shwartz) * Updated to the latest version of the Authentic theme. * More Majordomo module improvements, thanks to gnadelwartz. * Fixed upstart vs systemd detection. * German translation updates from Raymond Vetter, Albanian from Adalen Vladi, and Catalan from Jaume Badiella. * Let's Encrypt fixes when using DNS-based validation in a sub-domain. As always, please send me any bug reports or feature suggestions that you might have. - Jamie |

This is a bug in the current Webmin release - it will forcibly overwrite any file or directory before you do the backup. I will fix this in the next release though. Hello to all. In Webmin, I was going to dump a database called "proy7" to a file, so in the "Backup database" screen I completed the complete path and name of file where I wanted to dump that database. Somehow, I didn´t finish the name of the file, and typed down only this: /var/www/html/proyectos/proy7 Unfortunately, that's the exact name of the directory where I wanted to dump the file. I pressed Enter without checking twice, but I though that Webmin was going to tell me that he could not create that file, because it was a directory. But to my surprise, the backup was made. And was shocked to see that the directory had been deleted, remaining only the file with the database backup. I tried to do the same using the console, but as I expected, it didn't let me dump the database to a file if the directory existed: root@servername:/var/www/html/proyectos# mysqldump -u proyecto6 -p proyecto6 > proy7 -bash: proy7: Es un directorio (For those who do not know Spanish, it only says that proy7 is a directory) Justo to be sure, I've tested all this again, and I confirm that if the file name matches an existing directory name in the "Path on server" field, the directory is deleted and replaced by the dump. I have been extremely lucky because the web site was just a test, so nothing important has been lost. And anyways, I have backups of course. But I think that it would be a good idea if this could be corrected to avoid certain level of panic fiding out that data can be deleted. My system configuration is Debian 9.1, Webmin 1.850, and MariaDB 10.1.26. Jamie, please tell me if you need further information. Kind regards: Alfredo |

In Virtualmin (and also Webmin's Sendmail and Postfix modules) you can create mail aliases which forward to multiple addresses, and can be edited by the admin. The only catch is that a reply to a message forwarded by the alias will by default go to the original sender, NOT the alias. Mailman is what provides the message re-writing needed for this to work properly. |

Hi, As I see it, the functionality of distribution groups (ie, mail to address gr...@do... goes to multiple recipients) is realised by mailman. Problem is, this thing is quite antiquated, makes trouble <https://www.virtualmin.com/node/34995>when installing and is annoying the user with cryptic mails for subscribe/unsubscribe/digest/whathaveyou. would it be possible to implement a simple system where the domain admin can create a group, add/remove users and these users receive mail sent to this group address? best, PAT -- |

Hi, I was testing my webmin, and because for some reason the extract feature was disabled from my webmin (I couldn't find it anywhere) I decided to install Filemin in order to extract without the command line (it is more practical, than loging into putty, cd into the dir and extract the file myself with tar or something), however I was dissatisfied with filemin because I could only find a compress feature, so I removed the feature (filemin) from my server, however, when I removed it didn't return to the old file manager by default. So right now the only file manager available is the old java file manager that doesn't work with my browser (firefox), I can't find any documentation that gives me an hint about how to restore the old file manager. Could you help me? Sorry for asking for help so many times, altough I have several years of linux experience (I even used Mint for 3 years on my laptop) I'm a medium-low user of Linux. Thanks! |

Andrey, I don't usually reply to trolls, but I'm gonna feed you this one time, but of course I'm using Virtualmin to manage at least one website, to be fair I want to create a website that can be downloaded into Queen Elizabeth's mind so that she passes her title into me, that or maybe I am just one of these crazy guys who like to have their own website, you choose what you believe more. You're not getting any more food so soon. OP wants to manage websites. Why wouldn't they want to use Virtualmin? That's the "special purpose" it was designed for. So...I think importing into Virtualmin is a reasonable thing to do. What do you think Virtualmin's "special purpose" is, if not this? ;-) And, there is an import function in there somewhere...ah, under "Add Servers->Import Virtual Server". That may or may not do everything that's needed, depending on how much different the original domain was setup. The location of the files may be a problem, since suexec can only work in /home in a Virtualmin system (assuming it was installed using our install script) and can only work in /var/www if you didn't install with the install script. (Ignore Andrey, he is a troll.) I assume you have created a simple apache website via /etc/sites-enabled? there is no automatic way to move it, but you can do it like this: 1. move content to a temporary directory 2. if you did something special in /etc/init.d/apache2/sites-available/yoursite.conf copy this file as well. 3. remove the website from /etc/init.d/apache2/sites-available (and..enabled) 4. install virtualmin 5. create your domain 6. move content to the root of your new website in /home/ domain.com/public_html 7. copy your changes from the old .conf file to the newly created (it's in the same place).important: don't just overwrite the whole file, just insert your changes. 1. do some minor changes to the config of your domain in virtualmin (so that virtualmin can pick up your changes and re-write the config) On Mon, Aug 21, 2017 at 7:48 PM Carlos Barros < car...@ho...> wrote: > Hi, I have a problem, I installed webmin in my server and I add a website, > however I only knew about virtualmin after doing this and I installed > virtualmin after adding the website, is there a way to add my website to > virtualmin being it in webmin? > > > Thanks! > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Check out the vibrant tech community on one of the world's most > engaging tech sites, Slashdot.org! http://sdm.link/slashdot- > Forwarded by the Webmin mailing list at > web...@li... > To remove yourself from this list, go to > http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/webadmin-list > -- |

This could be due to SMART disk status collection. You can turn this off at Webmin -> Webmin Configuration -> Background Status Collection. On 13/Aug/2017 05:22 Paul Hancock <Pau...@li...> wrote .. Hi All Why webmin 1.850 does not list Active Directory users or groups from an AD?? I can see all of them when I execute "getent passwd" or "getent group". This time google was not my friend. Regards. Ethy |

Webmin fully supports chroot'd BIND, however you may need to configure the module to know about the chroot directory. |

I am thinking of changing over to Nextlight (Longmont, CO), but unfortunatly they will not sell an IP address, except to a registered buisness. I've looked into using dDNS and there are a couple of options that I can get working for my web / email server. The problem though is Virtualmin, or I'm missing something. Nextlight will hand my server an ip address via dhcp, but I can not find a way of getting Virtualmin to see an IP change on my external nic and then do an update. Have I missed something, I'm sure I have. Nigel. |

A few questions, please: 1. I have removed all bind9 packages from my debian jessie and stretch servers, and I have installed the latest webmin on all. If I link all Bind utilities from /usr/local/sbin to /usr/sbin, will webmin recognize them and manage Bind for me? 2. Can webmin deal with adding a systemd service for the user-installed Bind? 3. If I chroot the Bind installation, can webmin still handle questions 1 and 2 (with the appropriate linking)? Thanks. -Tom |

If you want a web hosting control panel that competes with cPanel or Plesk, Virtualmin is what you want. It can import your Plesk domains, install WordPress for you, etc. It is available in a GPL version. Webmin is not a web hosting control panel, it is a general purpose systems management tool. Virtualmin is the control panel built on top of Webmin (by the same people) for the purpose of making web hosting really easy. I'd recommend you start by installing Virtualmin, and then ask questions based on that, since the process of setting up your sites will be much different (and easier) under Virtualmin than under Webmin. It looks like you are trying to duplicate the features of Plesk in Webmin, you need to use Virtualmin to get the hosting feature stuff also. So add that to the mix, the SQL stuff will just work... From: Carlos Barros [mailto:car...@ho...] Sent: Saturday, July 22, 2017 1:33 PM To: web...@li... Subject: [webmin-l] Creating MySQL Database+Seting up domain Hi, I'm quite new to Webmin, so I guess I need some kind of support since I only used paid panels before (cpanel, plesk). I'm doing this because I didn't find anything on the wiki. I installed the Mysql module on Webmin (on my dedicated server). I need to create a empty database (just an user and pass) for a migration. However I have a few doubts (sorry if this looks noob-ish to ask). On MySql Database Server, I just have to setup a database name, and on Field name I set up the user, but I also need to setup password, how can I do it? Is there any other settings I need to change? Other operations? I see a "Key" check box, does that box sets up an automatic password? I would like to set up my own password. I need this because I am using duplicator to migrate my blog (wordpress) from a Plesk instalation to a Webmin one. Also just to clear my conscience, when I change my domain ips do I need to change some kind of setting on webmin? Thanks! Carlos Barros |
