Bizarre .. does the function get_pid_file exist in apache/apache-lib.pl on your system? It looks like BIND is running under a chroot directory, perhaps /var/run/bind. Is that the case on your system? It is quite possible that a new version of the Debian BIND package has changed the default location of the PID file. Howdy folks, I think I reported this some days ago but did not get a response, so maybe you missed it. I have recently upgraded my Bind and now Webmin says it is not running. Bind (Version 9.2.3-1.backports.org.1) is up and running, but a) Webmin checks for it every five minutes in the System and Server Status-Module and reports an error. b) In Virtualmin (latest version) reports Bind is down d) The Bind-Module itself says it is not up and running If I do a ps ds217-115-144-166:/etc/mail# pp | grep named 3907 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/named 3908 ? S 0:04 \_ /usr/sbin/named 3909 ? S 0:08 \_ /usr/sbin/named 3910 ? S 0:01 \_ /usr/sbin/named 3911 ? S 0:01 \_ /usr/sbin/named I can find it. The search for the PID-file says ds217-115-144-166:/etc/mail# locate named.pid /var/run/bind/run/named.pid So I went back to the Bind-Modules-Configuration and explicity set the location of the PID-File to that file and everything works ok. Maybe this is a weird configuration, because I use a backport of Bind. Dear all,
I have just put online a survey addressing the topic of "leadership
in the open-source environment". Basically, my objective is to
identify the personal conceptions of good leadership that reside in
the minds of the contributors, in terms of leaders' _behaviors_ and
_characteristics_.
What is a good open-source project leader, from the
contributor's point of view? To what extent, those personal believes are
shared among developers? Can the contributor's national cultural belonging
and level of experience in contributing to open-source projects explain such
differences in their idea of what a good leader is?
I would really appreciate your participation to the survey! Contribution
(*completely* anonymous) consists in rating a list of statements that may be
used to describe the behaviors of an open-source leader. It will take around
ten minutes - there aren't any "time-consuming" open ended questions;)

It's for the b9ddns third-party module. If people are going to do things on a slave DNS name server but from a master server (that is, the master name server as well as the webmin server that they are logged on) - such as creating/deleting zones, reload's etc - then I'd like it logged on the slave. I can see zones being created and deleted on the master server webmin log but nothing is said about whether the zone was created/deleted on the slave as well. In fact I think the master server should log that as well as the slave logging the fact that it is creating/deleting a zone. Hi, I'm looking into managing CourierMAilAccount objects in an LDAP directory. This would allow creation, deletion and editing of virtual mail accounts. Sine I can't find any existing tool I figured writing a new webmin module would probably be my best bet, similar to the LDAP user account manager distributed as a standard module. I've registered my interest on the wish list at http://digisec.mine.nu/. Before I start, I thought I'd check if anybody has any advice. For example am I wasting my time, is there anything I ought to know from the outset, and is anybody else interested? Thanks Jamie. The reason I was interested in usermin logging was that I was toying with the idea of using Usermin/Webmin as an application server. Yeah, this can be dropped. It should be added as an attribute in the
module config if it's needed. It's an optional attribute for the
sambaAccount object class. Also, I found another bug here:
in save_user.cgi
line 157:
$pass = "{crypt}".$pass if ($pass !~ /^\{crypt\}/);
should be:
$pass = "{crypt}".$pass if ($pass !~ /^\{crypt\}/i);
and
line 770:
$user{'pass'} =~ s/^{crypt}//;
should be:
$user{'pass'} =~ s/^{crypt}//i;
Otherwise, if the ldap server or some other process updates the
userPassword attribute and makes it {Crypt}<cryptedpass> then
save_user.cgi will make it {crypt}{Crypt}<cryptedpass> which breaks
any authentication attempt. Just needs to be case-insensitive.

The main Usermin webserver process runs as root, and all CGI scripts are run as root initially, but most drop their privileges down to the level of the logged-in user before doing anything. So writing to global log files after some action is performed is not possible .. although there may be ways around this by pre-opening the log file before dropping root privileges. Forgive for my ignorance, but, how would that effect Usermin activity? Usermin runs as root as does Webmin. Couldn't Usermin activity be logged in the same fashion? Why would a module's privileges matter if the master process has root privileges. Hi all, I haven't been online over the weekend that much and just find out, that on my Debian 3r2-Box my cronjobs have gone wild. I wanted to change the frequency for my FAQ from weekly into monthly and checked the requested boxes in Webmin's CRON-Module. As you can see, from the 1st it came in daily, which was not my intention. I noticed a bug in the Samba attributes in the LDAP Users & Groups module. The module adds sambaPrimaryGroupSID and presumes that the RID can be algorithmically generated. There are several "well known" groups and corresponding RIDs, such as the "Domain Users" group with RID of 513. It would be better to ascertain the group SID with an LDAP query if the group already exists; however, considering that the smbldap tools do not populate this attribute and none of the docs mention that it is required, it would probably be best to simply not add the attribute. Adding New Languages to Webmin New translations of the existing core Webmin modules are always welcome. If you want to translate Webmin into a new language or update one of the existing translations, follow these steps : Get the latest development version of Webmin so that you can see the latest translations that have been done by other people. In the file lang_list.txt in the Webmin root directory, add a new line for your language like : lang=sw,titles=1,charset=iso-6666-6 Swahili The "lang" part defines the short code for the language, and should follow the ISO standard where possible. The "titles" part controls whether Webmin should use letter images for displaying page titles in the language, and should be set to 1 if your language uses european characters. The optional "charset" part sets the character set that is sent to the web browser when using the language, so that is can automatically select the right font to use. Switch to your new language in the Webmin Configuration module under the Language icon. In the directory lang under the Webmin root and in each of the lang subdirectories under the module directories, create a new file called sw (or whatever the short code for your language is) that is a translation of the en file in the same directory. In each of the module.info files under the module directories, add a new desc_sw= line that is a translation of the desc= line. In each of the module directories, create a new file called config.info.sw which is a translation of config.info (if it exists). In the help subdirectory under each of the module directories (where they exist), translate all of the something.html files into something.sw.html. A table of currently translated languages is available so that you can see how much has been done for each language and module so far. There is also a list of other translators that you might want to contact before doing your own translation work. You don't have to finish translating the entire of Webmin for your translation to be useful. Many people just do a few modules at a time, or skip the help pages initially.
